The YWCA Youth Centre aims to cater children between the age of 13 to 18, whereas the girls’ hostel aims to take care of girls aged between 18 to 25 who are looking for a place to stay to help them get back on their feet. The latter hostel is being renovated until November. Rocket Internet-owned Zalora Singapore [1] notes that this is the first corporate social responsibility program that the company has ever done.

(Update: The latest is that the Thai PM doesn’t really “know” about the details of the Line privacy invasion yet. After the cabinet meeting, she talked about how the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) plans to check on Thai citizens’ Line conversations, but said she hasn’t been clearly informed on this matter yet. However, she wants to guarantee that Thai citizens’ rights are not being invaded. Line app is not a threat to the country, she said, and if the police wants to check on anyone, it will be on case-by-case basis.

Today, the police led by Pol Maj Ge Pisit Pao-in, commander of the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) announced the plan to check on Thai citizens’ Line conversations. Latest news from mthai confirms that the police agency had asked Line Corporation in Japan to cooperate. If it agrees, all 15 million Line user names in Thailand, along with our conversations will be sent to the police.

The Nation reported that the Police had requested the same with other social network websites, Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, etc, but had failed with other operators as they were mostly from the US and did not allow such investigation.

The police claims this is just a pre-caution act as more Thai people are on the social networks. After all, it’s the police authorities job to see if anyone violates the law or threatens national security.

Of course, this announcement caused such outrage on the online community as Thais feel it violates their rights. I have seen complaints all over my Facebook feed and Twitter Timeline. Some even commented that they’d consider other social chats such as Whatsapp and WeChat as their alternative if their Line accounts are being watched. Thai’s social media influencers, Kafaak and YokeKung are among the first who show their concerns on this matter.

The Emotiv Insight is an iteration of the EPOC headset that Vietnamese-Australian co-founder and CEO Tan Le introduced in a TED talk in 2010. Korean couple app Between takes on Southeast Asian market

Created by Korean startup VCNC, Between is a social networking just for two, and it plans to take Southeast Asia by storm.

You know the sort, always sending cute messages to each other’s Facebook wall, cluttering your newsfeed with annoying content that really should only be between the two lovebirds. If so, smartphone app Between is something for you. Created by Korean Startup VCNC, Between is a SNS just for two. It provides a private space for all lovers to communicate and share their beautiful memories with their significant other.

韓国のカップルアプリBetweenが東南アジアへ進出

韓国のスタートアップVCNCが作ったBetweenは２人のためのソーシャルネットワークで、東南アジアに嵐を呼ぶ計画である。

次のようなカップルになりたいと思わなかったか? よく知っているとおり、お互いFacebookのウォールにいじらしいメッセージを常に送り、愛する２人しか分からない困ったコンテンツでニュースフィードをいっぱいにする。そのような場合、スマートフォンアプリのBetweenはもってこいだ。韓国のスタートアップVCNCが作ったBetweenは２人だけのためのSNSである。恋人たちにプライベートな空間を提供し、連絡を取り合い、かけがえのない人との美しい記録をシェアできる。

Singapore was a great place to gain these insights and assist with their growth strategy, said CEO Jaeuk Park. He went on: “We had a rough strategy for penetrating the Southeast Asia market, however, we wanted feedback about the feasibility around the plan in the region. We have learned more about the market and in which countries we should be focusing when entering SE Asia. Also, learning about the different characteristics of the SE Asian countries has given us a clearer vision on how to refine our plans for expansion”. VCNC is looking to launch in Southeast Asia now, starting with Singapore as a permanent base.

During the KAPP trip the team held their first customer event, with the intention of having two to three more before the end of this year.

Tough competition in the SNS market for couples

VCNC is facing tough competition in their quest to go global with Between. Apps such as Y Combinator-backed Couple, as well as Avocado, SimplyUs and LoveByte, are also pursuing the couples market.

China’s Weibo could transform into an awesome hyperlocal network

In my previous article, I briefly touched upon Sina Weibo and Tencent Weibo’s mobile ‘look around’ feature while examining Asian diaspora populations near Silicon Valley. That time I was using the messaging apps WeChat and Zalo. This time I’ll focus on the Twitter-like Weibos.

以前の記事で、シリコンバレーの近くに住むアジア人移住者を検証しつつSina WeiboやTencent Weiboのモバイル「周囲確認」機能について少し触れた程度であった。その時はメッセージアプリWeChatとZaloを使用した。今度は、TwitterのようなWeibosにフォーカスしようと思う。

Sina Weibo and its oft-forgotten microblogging rival Tencent Weibo have an even larger array of “hyperlocal” tools than those chat apps. Sina Weibo’s official mobile app has the largest amount of nearby options, including categories of local recommendations for nearby discounts, group buying, food, movies, bars, hotels, and other places of interest. There is also a gallery of all user photos posted nearby.

Scroll further down the screen, and there is a stream of location-tagged posts, where I found 53 postings located within 500 meters of my current location an area of northern California.

Sina Weiboと、よく忘れられるマイクロブログの競合Tencent Weiboは、チャットアプリよりも「超ローカル」なツールを数多く持っている。Sina Weiboの公式モバイルアプリは最大規模の近隣オプションがあり、これには近隣店の割引、グループ購入、食品、映画、バー、ホテルその他関心のある場所についてのローカルな推薦カテゴリーもある。あらゆる近隣ユーザが投稿した写真のギャラリーもある。

さらに下へスクロールダウンしていくと、位置にタグ付けされた投稿もあるが、カリフォルニア北部にある私の居住地の500メートル以内の場所で53もの投稿を見ることができた。

I could ‘like’ and comment on nearby user content, but it was clear that these postings were largely unintended for a nearby audience – for instance, there were many comments along the lines of “you live in the US now?” and “how is American food?” most likely from friends in China, rather than my location.

Local tweets

Basically, it seems that Sina Weibo is only able to aggregate these sort of local news feeds due to the fact that all mobile Weibo posts include location data by default.

近隣ユーザのコンテンツに対し「いいね」、コメントすることもできるが、こうした投稿の多くは近隣の人向けでないことは明らかだった。例えば、多くのコメントにあったのは「いま米国に住んでいるのですか?」や「米国の食べ物はどうですか?」などで、近くの人ではなく、中国にいる友達からのもののようだった。

Tencent Weibo, on the other hand, really only has two core ‘nearby’ features, which are ‘people nearby’ and ‘posts nearby’. Although some nearby Tencent postings are also aggregated due to default location settings on the mobile app, Tencent Weibo has one simple feature that hints at the possibility for a truly innovative Chinese hyperlocal network.

Tencent Weibo’s ‘posts nearby’ provides the option to directly target content to nearby users, prompting with a “Say something to the people around?” textbox (pictured above). This effectively closes the loop where Sina Weibo left off, allowing people to both consume and produce local content.

一方、Tencent Weiboには実際には２つのコアとなる「近隣」機能しかない。これは「近隣の人」と「近隣の投稿」である。Tencentの近隣投稿は、モバイルアプリ上のデフォルト位置設定により集められるが、Tencent Weiboには、本当に革新的な中国の超ローカルなネットワークにとっての可能性をほのめかす１つの単純な機能がある。

Tencent Weiboの「近隣投稿」は、直接的に近隣ユーザへのコンテンツを目標とするオプションを提供する。これは「近くにいる人に何か言おうか?」のテキストボックス(上の図)で促される。これにより、効果的にSina Weiboが投げたループの輪を閉じることができ、多くの人がローカルなコンテンツを消費し、生産することが可能となる。

Tencent could, in theory, spin this feature off into what could become China’s first hyperlocal network, somewhat akin to US-based Nextdoor.com and its neighborhood networks; or Tencent could go international by incorporating it into WeChat’s growing suite of features.

Time will tell if either of these powerhouse microblogs further explore the hyperlocal market, whether in China or beyond, but it is an interesting opportunity to consider.

理論的にはTencentは、この機能をスピンオフして米国を拠点とするNextdoor.comのように、中国で最初の超ローカルネットワーク、同社の近隣ネットワークにすることもできた。もしくはこの機能をWeChatの成長機能に取り入れることにより国際化することもできた。

こうした力溢れるマイクロブログのいずれが超ローカルな市場（それが中国であれその他であれ）をさらに開拓していくかは時間が経てば分かるだろう。けだしこれを考えるのは面白い機会である。

Aside from sticker packs, Korean app Between offers premium features which allows couples to send each other video messages, back up photos in high resolution, and use animated emoticons. Additionally Between also partners with companies in Asia to offer discounts and coupons for couples to buy things for each other such as photo books, flowers, and coffee. It also advertises travel packages and other lifestyle products and items from partner companies for couples to help them make the best of their times together.

韓国のアプリBetweenはステッカーパックのほか、カップル向けに互いのビデオメッセージのやり取り、高解像度での写真のバックアップ、アニメーション付きの顔文字の利用ができるプレミアム機能を提供している。さらに同社はアジアのパートナーとも提携し、カップルが相手にフォトブック、花、コーヒーなどの商品を購入する際に割引やクーポンを提供している。同社はまたカップル向けに旅行パッケージやその他のライフスタイル商品、提携企業からのアイテムの販促も行い、カップルが人生の良いひと時を一緒に過ごす手助けをしている。
