There are a thousand possibilities here. The potential remains huge. But I think it’s essential Twitter find a CEO with a proven track record as a product person. Someone who can manage the seemingly impossible balancing act of expanding Twitter’s utility while simplifying the experience.

If not, well, investment bankers are no doubt smelling blood in the water, and pitching tents outside Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters.

The good
In Nick Bilton’s “Hatching Twitter,” he quotes Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as saying:

“[Twitter is] such a mess – it’s as if they drove a clown car into a gold mine and fell in.”

The site was still constantly crashing. Indeed, it crashed the day Costolo was appointed CEO. It hadn’t figured out how to effectively monetize its rapidly growing user base. Just months after its first developers’ conference, the company had a confusing message about which services it would build and what would be left for third parties.

And on a fundamental level, Twitter was still quite confusing for new users.

The bad
Starting last year, the drumbeats calling for Costolo to go as CEO began to grow. There was simply too much that wasn’t getting fixed. The feeling that Twitter was not seizing all of its opportunities still lingered.

Twitter’s user growth was slowing. For a company whose service gets pimped for free across every media platform, that’s sort of remarkable, really. While we can debate whether Twitter is mainstream, the fact remains that it’s still too hard for new users to understand.

Five years should have been enough time to fix that problem.

昨年以降、Costolo氏をCEOとして求める声高な要求が高まった。単純に、改善されない点が多すぎたのだ。Twitterはあらゆるチャンスを掴めずにいるという感覚が、なかなか消えなかった。

And in terms of conversations, it’s nearly impossible to follow them. Twitter recently introduced a tweak that helps a little. But I still find it too difficult and a turn-off. And if someone starts flaming you and lots of other people starting jumping in, following the madness can be impossible.

While Twitter was tweaking direct messaging for several years, Facebook spun off Messenger into a whole different product that has 700 million users. And now Messenger is its own platform. Messaging was just one of Twitter’s many huge missed opportunities.

It’s a bit like driving. Every time we drive in a car we are risking our lives. At any moment, someone could slam into us and kill us even though we did nothing wrong. It is tragic when this occurs, but it occurs rarely enough that we consider it an acceptable risk. The many benefits we gain from having the ability and freedom to move about more than make up for the risks. Nobody seriously suggests banning cars from the road in order to stop the multitude of fully avoidable automobile deaths that occur each year. As a society, we have determined that the benefits are too great compared to the risks.

A wide range of companies are now trying to build gadgets that enhance our listening experience by understanding our behaviors and interests. There are some designers who are also trying to augment the physical experience of music and trying to reinvent the way we participate in music creation.

During the recent Midem conference, I was a judge for the startup competition for hardware and connected objects. (Watch all 2 hours here!) But in addition to the 10 startups that presented during that competition, there was a Discovery Area at Midem where several other gadgets and companies not in the official contested were exhibiting.

現在、広範囲におよぶ会社が、我々の行動や関心を理解することで聴取体験を高めるガジェット作りに取り組んでいる。音楽の物理的な体験を増幅させたり、音楽制作への取り組み方を再考案しようとするデザイナーもいる。

1. Prizm
Prizm (France)
The pyramid-shaped Prizm claims to be “the first learning music player.” The connected speaker can be linked to just about any streaming music service. But the twist is that it will monitor the moods of people in the room and, over time, learn how they are reacting to the music and then adjust the choices automatically. If an AI music speaker can really pull this off, I can see it becoming indispensable in many homes.

もしAIミュージックスピーカーがこれを成功させれば、たくさんの家庭で必要不可欠なものとなるだろう。

3. Basslet
The Basslet by Rescued Ideas (Germany)
Also a wristband (and not the last!). But in this case, you attach one to each wrist and it causes your entire skeleton to vibrate with the music — you hear and feel the music like you were at a live concert. This is a pretty straightforward concept that was obviously impressing a lot of people at Midem. Our panel of five judges picked this one as the winner of the startup competition.

3. Basslet

これもまたリストバンドである(それも最後ではない！)。しかしこの場合、それぞれの手首に一つずつ取り付けることで、全身の骨が音楽で揺り動かされる。まるでライブコンサートにいるように音楽が聴こえ、感じられるのだ。
これはMidemにおいて多くの人を特に感心させた、かなり率直なコンセプトである。我々５名の審査員パネルは、スタートアップコンペティションの勝者としてこれを選んだ。

5. Phonotonic
Phonotonic (France)
While this company may not be out to change the world, its product is guaranteed to make you smile. Phonotonic puts sensors in these little balls that you can shake or toss to both generate music, adjust the mix, or … whatever. The goal is to make music and not just accompany it. (And at some point, I’m betting it’s going to lead to some very odd YouTube videos.) Now, you can go to the rave and you can also be the rave.

FretX by Labana (France)
This is a little piece of fabric with circuits printed on the back and LED lights on the front. It slides onto the fretboard of a guitar, and then you pick a song to play using an app on your smartphone. Rather than having to squint at tabs on your computer, you can just look down at the guitar and the lights tell you where to place your fingers.

Hooke (USA)
The company makes wireless earbuds that also contain microphones for recording sound. The idea is that by capturing sound in two places, as your ears do naturally, the result is a richer 3D audio.

FretXは裏に回線、表にLEDライトがついた布である。それをギターのフレットボードにセットし、あとはスマートフォンのアプリケーションを使ってプレイしたい曲を選ぶ。コンピュータ上のタブ譜を横目で見なくても、ギターを見れば、どこに指を置けば良いかライトが教えてくれる。

会社は、音を録音するためのマイクもついたワイヤレスのイヤホンを制作した。このアイデアは、耳で自然にそうするように、音を2カ所から捉えることで、より豊かな3Dオーディオが得られるというものである。

8. Trak
Trak (France)
OK, last wristband for today, kids. Trak looks like a typical fitness band, but when you tap it, it identifies and records a bit of a song you’re hearing (on the radio or maybe a concert) and adds it to a playlist at home. It can connect people at the same event and also enable you to follow the DJs and artists that you hear. You can connect all of your music services to Trak. It’s due to launch this autumn, with companion iOS and Android apps (both phone and watch).

After receive the documents, I met the custom yesterday to ask about receiving food additive. And belong to their answer, I think that we can receive the FA easily but not fast. Because after receive the agreement, the food administration will check directly from the cargo you sent to sure that it's the same with the FA we registered. So we are not sure now what's exactly time we can have FA in our factory.
