The app’s name in English – DirtyBeijing – is a bit risky too, though its Chinese moniker translates to the more bland “Beijing air pollution index.” The app is a bit basic, with only one screen, but it’s still brand-new and just at version 1.0. At the moment it just has two graphs, the PM2.5 read-out, and two pieces of advice for those who’re venturing outdoors – including whether its advisable to wear a mask.

‘DirtyBeijing’ App Courts Controversy, Warns Smartphone Users of Crazybad Air

A Beijing-based startup called Fresh Ideas Studio has just released perhaps the most good-looking local air quality app for iPhone and Android, called DirtyBeijing. But it could find itself getting into trouble, as it uses the stricter US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) index – not the one that’s mandated by the Chinese government.

The Fresh Ideas app, free for iPhone and Android, gives Beijing smartphone-toters what’s called the ‘PM2.5’ read-out, which refers to a kind of especially small ‘particulate matter’ that’s less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter.

Han Han might be China’s biggest celebrity blogger, which is a pretty impressive title for an infrequently-updated traditional blog to have in the microblog age. It helps, of course, that Han is young, handsome, drives a race car, and has cultivated a rebellious political image while so far managing to keep himself out of jail.

In a recent post on his blog, Han Han also addressed why he hasn’t jumped into microblogging despite his domination of traditional blogging and his millions of followers. What’s keeping him off the Weibo wave?

Also, this is not DeNA’s first foray into Vietnam. The Japanese web giant acquired the Punch Entertainment Vietnam studio back in September of this year. Today’s move is another vote of confidence in Vietnam. On that subject, Tetsuya Mori, MD of DeNA Asia, said:

DeNA is pretty busy this week, as yesterday two major rivals, GREE (TYO:3632) and KDDI, said they were joining forces to sue DeNA over alleged anti-competitive practices. They’re suing for 1 billion yen (US$13 million). It relates to apparently pressuring game developers to keep them from building games on GREE’s platform.

Finally! — Today we’re announcing Startup Asia Singapore, our first and very own tech startup event.

We have attended and blogged about many tech conferences across Asia and thought we could contribute to this continent with an event that has a bit of our own DNA: a startup event that is built by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs. One with an entrepreneurial attitude.

In fact, a survey last week by Assumption University’s respected ABAC Poll Center found that social media had surpassed newspapers as a source of information with usage increasing from roughly 19 percent to 25 percent during the floods in Thailand.

Twitter has become probably the most used and trusted platform for flood info, with people who may have never heard of the site before signing up.600,000 in September to 720,000 in October, according to the digital media agency McFiva that owns the advertising rights to Twitter in the country. The platform has achieved buzz throughout all sectors of Thai society, and stories are floating around of nervous mothers asking their teenage kids to join for flood updates.

In an interesting look at how Twitter users can govern themselves during a crisis, people came up with separate hash tags for Thai (#thaiflood) and English (#thaifloodeng) information. As the flooding approached Bangkok, influential tweeple like travel blogger Richard Barrow urged users to employ the correct hashtag so people wouldn’t have to sift through tweets in a language they didn’t understand. McFiva managing director Supachai Parchariyanon told the AFP last week that #thaiflood was currently the biggest hashtag in Thailand.

About Facebook, the platform has served as more of a forum for photo sharing and “we’re all in this together” camaraderie during the floods than real-time information. The community feature – pages “dedicated to a topic or experience that is owned collectively by the community connected to it,” as Facebook puts it – has seen the most use.

Probably the biggest community, the name of which can be loosely translated to “When the waters rise, we post”, launched on Oct. 6 and now has over 290,000 members sharing photos of their flooded backyards (sometimes with crocodiles loose in them), advice for house cleaning after the floods, and motivational messages.

Misinformation on social media has sometimes been a problem during the flooding, as alarming posts can quickly go viral and be passed around as fact. But there have been no reports of major false panics. For comic relief during the flooding, Tumblr has become the platform of choice for English speakers for its quick and easy functionality.

ChinaStars, Turning Students into Entrepreneurial Stars

There are a growing number of incubators, accelerators and programs designed to help propel start-ups to success. There is Innovation Works, YuenfenFlow, Start-up Leadership Program in Beijing; China Accelerator in Dalian, TiSiWi in Hangzhou. All are trying to emulate the success of their U.S counterparts like Y Combinator and TechStars to produce billion dollar companies like Airbnb or Dropbox.

Trilogy Ventures launches ChinaStars

A new kid on the block called ChinaStars is entering the mix. Led by Steven Bell of Trilogy Ventures, ChinaStars is transposing itsmodel of focusing on top students from top Chinese universities into an acceleration program.

72 crazy hours of hacking, 90 days of hustling

Firstly ChinaStars holds a crazy energy charged 72 hour hackathon to build a demo of a super cool social mobile app on the exponentially growing Weibo platform. Following the hackathon, the most promising teams will be invited to enter a 90 day acceleration program with 24,000 RMB and mentor support to help them focus on cranking out a killer app.

The Beijing hackathon was held on October 21st and Melody He of Trilogy Ventures said they were “blown away by their innovative ideas and ability to execute!” Six teams were selected to enter the 90 Day phase.
