Like Rovio’s Angry Birds, PopCap’s brands have shown a lot of promise in merchandising in China. (Throughout the past few weeks, I’ve seen Plants Vs. Zombies shirts and trading card decks around on kids and adults alike in the bigger cities.)

The company has more inbound interest than it can handle in terms of licensing its brand. It did a deal with China’s largest casual wear chain, Meters/bonwe, that saw sales of 10 T-shirts a minute in Shanghai on the first day.

Of course, like with pirated apps, PopCap has to deal with copycat merchandise. There are 75,000 knockoff items related to PopCap brands on Taobao, which is like the eBay of China, Gwertzman said.

The best strategy to deal with that is doing higher-quality work than what the copycats produce.

“What we’ve come to realize is that this is an incredibly complex market,” Gwertzman said. “It’s often very difficult for Western companies and they have to be prepared for the long haul.”

8 Alternative Android App Stores From China

Just as the entire Android system is largely open, so the method of getting apps onto Google’s mobile OS is also unfettered. In most of the rest of the world, the official Android Market suffices as the primary app source – but in China, the situation has evolved quite differently. That’s where dozens of app stores – some legitimate; some dodgy – come into play.

Statistics from research firm DCCI suggest that Android has 23 percent of global mobile OS market share, with Symbian still the leader at 29 percent. But, as the graph below shows, the two platforms are on opposing trajectories. Google’s Android – with its spread of low-end $100 phones, up to dual-core iPhone 4 competitors – will soon exceed Symbian’s worldwide usage in a few months time. It’ll take a bit longer in China; but it’s heading the same way.

Estimates vary on the number of Android smartphones in use in China. They range from 10 to 18 million, and likely beat Apple’s iPhone by virtue of catering to a wider range of budgets. But Google has not been able to implement paid apps support in China, which leaves a large market open to cater to the needs of China’s smartphone-toting app lovers. So, skip past the graph for eight hip and happening unofficial app stores that are fighting for the attention of these millions of app consumers.

The Eight Contenders

1. Tencent’s App Store arrived on the scene last week, just in time to complement its desktop syncing Tencent App Assistant from last month. It’s a very social store, allowing for login with a QQ number, and features sharing and commenting on the apps in the store. Between this and its desktop counterpart, it seems that Tencent is implementing app, photo, and music sharing on Android better than Google is managing it. Take a look here.

Red Alert! Tencent Joins Android App Stores Competition

Lacking of paid apps and additional business models, and facing a tough competition from tens of similar services, as we predicted back in April, most Chinese independent Android app stores will have a hard time sooner or later. GFan is the only one we heard recently raised $5 millions and the others such as NDuoa (early invested by Shanda), eoeMarket etc we don’t even know what they are working on. And we even heard that one popular Android app store has been acquired by a giant at a cheap price (as it’s running out of money). Unfortunately, now the situation is even getting worse, the super giant, Tencent, just released its own Android App Store.

As always, Tencent is very good at the products. Its app store, named Tencent App Center has a nice UI and the user experience is good too. And Tencent is also very smart, unlike other app stores, its App Store comes with friends sharing and commenting feature. In other words, if you log into the app center with your QQ account, you would be able to see what apps have been downloaded by your QQ contacts, and their comments on those apps. You can also rank the app, share it on QQ, email or SMS. The idea is similar to FrienzApp, Chomp, AppGroovs etc but the obviously difference is that Tencent App Center has a hundreds of millions of QQ users already standing by.
