Burpple is only available in iOS for now but I was told to “stay tuned” for the Android version, which seems to suggest that it is already in the pipeline. Most smartphone users in China are Android users anyway, so it is necessary for any mobile-first startup to have that in place.

Cooliris Unveils LiveShare Messaging App for Android

The reboot LiveShare app that currently focus on messaging activities is “iOS only no more”. Cooliris just announces that the reboot version is now available on Google Play for free. As messaging app, LiveShare eliminates the consumers’ expensive messaging costs with a free and beautifully-organized experience that blends 1-to-1 and group messaging with collage-style photo sharing. With its deeper integration with Facebook and the device’s address book, LiveShare enables users to seamlessly invite their friends and interact more visually in real-time.

LiveShare will compete directly with prominent messaging app like WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or LINE that mostly already available in multiple smartphone platforms, including Windows Phone and BlackBerry. There are also popular single platform messaging apps, for example BlackBerry Messenger and iMessage.

Previously, it was a mobile social app focusing on photo sharing and having around 4 million users, until the whole realm is totally scrapped by Instagram. Hence, it made pivotal step to messaging genre

FC2 is also targeting Brazil, as it has just added Portuguese (see blog.fc2.com/pt) to its list of supported languages. According to comScore, Brazil’s online population enjoy blogs about as much as anyone else in the world with 85.2 percent visiting a blog back in June of 2011, second only to Taiwan at 85.5 [1]. The South American nation has the world’s fifth largest internet population at about 82 million.

Wantedly: Japan’s Trust-based Social Recruiting Site Officially Debuts

On Monday, a Tokyo-based tech startup called Wanted officially released its social recruiting platform Wantedly. The service was developed by ex-FBer Akiko Naka and her buddy Gaku Hagiwara, and it allows employers to find potential employees by showing them how they would work in the company with possible future colleagues.


We had a chance to interview the startup’s co-founder and CEO Naka and asked her a little bit more about the service, as well as some of the details behind it.

月曜日に東京のスタートアップ企業ウォンテッドはソーシャル・リクルート・サービスを公式にオープンした。元Facebook社員の仲 暁子（なか あきこ）さんと、萩原 学（はぎわら がく）さん`によって開発されたこのサービスを使うと、未来の同僚がどのように働くのかを見ることで、会社は採用できそうな人材を見つけることができる。

このサービスとその背景について、創業者でありCEOの仲さんにインタビューすることができた。
以下はインタビューの内容である。

The service is available via Facebook authentication, and only corporate users which have reached the startup’s standard are allowed to make posts for gathering people (from among individual users) for having power lunches, inviting co-workers, organizing hackathons, and offering contact-based jobs. If you are interested in joining a task or a project described in the post, you can raise your hand by pressing the ‘apply button.’ Some projects are open only to the users who have a Facebook friend working with the company who has posted, which improves the quality of each post and makes users more comfortable when applying.

このサービスはFacebook認証をすることで使える。サービスの規定に達した企業ユーザーのみが（通常の個人ユーザーに対して）採用募集の投稿ができる、ランチに招待したり、同僚を呼んだり、Hackathon（開発者の集まり）を開いたり、契約社員を募集したりといったものだ。投稿された仕事やプロジェクトに興味を持ったら、応募ボタンですぐに意思表明できる。一部のプロジェクトは募集を投稿した会社の社員とFacebook上で友達になっていないと応募できなくなっていて、投稿のクオリティを向上させ、応募するときにより安心できるようになっている。

Prior to launching the service, Miss Naka was previously working with Goldman Sachs and Facebook Japan, and released an illustration posting site called Magajin as her weekend startup project. She has mastered Ruby-on-Rails in order to develop the app, which is running on Heroku.

While the team is tight-lipped on how many users it has, Alfonta said they expected to hit 100,000 users within a couple of months. Death is clearly on our social minds and Alfonta is no exception. “Oh my god, yes,” he says, when asked if he’s used If I Die to record his own parting messages. “I have four kids and a lovely wife and I left each one of them a message. I hope to live long and prosper but if something happens to me then I think there will be some excellent surprises for my kids, some touching messages.”

Google Translate for Android Adds Handwriting Recognition, Supports Japanese and Chinese

The Google Translate app for Android just added an experimental handwriting recognition support for a number of languages: English, French, Italian, and German – but perhaps far more importantly, for Japanese and Chinese. The unique challenge for anyone who struggles with understanding these last two, is that it’s often very hard to look them up since they aren’t based on the alphabet. But looking up characters in a dictionary can be a chore, particularly Chinese characters, since you need to be familiar with radicals and even then it’s a pain.

アンドロイド用のGoogle翻訳アプリに、試験的に手書き入力サポートが追加された。対応言語は英語、フランス語、イタリア語、ドイツ語にとどまらず日本語、中国語にも対応している。
日本語と中国語はアルファベットを使わないため、検索が難しく、手書き入力を理解するのが難しい。特に漢字を辞書で調べるには文字の基本的知識が必要で、とても大変なのだ、たとえ文字の基本を知っていても苦労するものだ。

This is especially true for any travelers who might be visiting Asia on a short trip, if they are struggling with signs or menus while out and about. While there are already a number of solutions out there that try to solve this problem [1], it’s great to see Google (NASQAQ:GOOG) bring handwriting support to the translate app.

To use it, have a look for the pencil icon in the top right, and then go ahead and write the character that you wish to look up. Assuming your writing is good enough to be recognized, you’ll be presented with the English translation (see pictures below).

I was a little skeptical on writing characters on a mobile screen without a stylus, but I gave this new feature a quick test run and it works really well (see screenshots below). It’s certainly a handy way to quickly identify tough characters when you’re about and about, and I think can it can be a very good tool for language learners as well.

If you’d like to give it a try, make sure your Google Translate app is up to date, and take it for a spin.

Report: China Online Gaming Market to Reach $ 8.84B in 2012

China’s online gaming market size is on track to surpass RMB 55.7 billion (US$ 8.84 billion) in 2012, up 20.7% year-over-year, according to a report out today by market researcher AnalysysInternational.

The Beijing-based researcher predicts that the by 2014 the market size will reach RMB 82.6 billion (US$ 13 billion).

AnalysysInternational also noted in the report that webpage-based games and mobile games will be under the spotlight in this year.

In China, Local Government Learned of Deadly Mudslide From the Internet

The internet is a magnificent communication tool that has enabled knowledge and news to transverse the world nearly instantaneously. That said, sometimes it’s best just to walk outside every once in a while and see what’s going on. A county government in Shanxi, China, learned that in June of 2011 when they hopped on a Chinese news site and discovered that a deadly mudslide had occurred the day before — in their own town.

中国の地方当局、地元で死者発生の地すべりをネットで知った

インターネットはものすごいコミュニケーションツールで、知識やニュースはほぼ一瞬で同時に世界を横断する。とはいえ、時には外に散歩に出て何が起きているかを見るのもいい。中国の新華区当局は2011年の6月に、昨日地すべりで死者がでたことをインターネットのニュースサイトで初めて知った。ー自分の町で起きたのにもかかわらず、だ。

The mudslide, which left nine people dead, occurred at 3 A.M. on the morning of June 26. But the government of the county in which it occurred was somehow unaware of it until early in the A.M. of the 27th, when someone spotted a news story about it on Xinhua’s website.

This report is part of a larger piece published by Xinhua reflecting on 2011 incidents where Chinese local governments filed their reports late. But this particular case is pretty shocking, and suggests to us that as great as the internet is, perhaps some local governors need to spend a little bit less time online and a little bit more time out in the real world.

Chaoren360: Social E-Commerce for Fashion-Minded Men

Whenever we’ve looked at specialist Chinese e-commerce sites that focus on fashion, they’ve pretty much all been aimed exclusively at women. And so the startup Chaoren360 – which is a pun on the word ‘superman’ in Chinese – is bucking that trend by selling only men’s apparel, shoes, and accessories.

ファッションを取り扱うEコマースサイトを見ると、ほとんど全てが女性のみをターゲットとしている。中国語で「スーパーマン」のだじゃれになっているCharoen360というスタートアップは、男性向けの衣服、靴、アクセサリーといった商品を販売することで差別化を図っている。

Chaoren360.com is based in Guangdong in southern China – now home to over 10 percent of all Chinese startups – and is actually more of a magazine than an online mall because it just links to products on others sites such as Alibaba’s Taobao.com or Tmall.com. And so the startup is just curating all these men’s fashion items and wrapping them up in a social layer that resembles a microblog in which you can follow other users and ‘like’ their listed products (pictured below). And that’s fine, as it’s an interesting approach – sort of social commerce without the inventory and overheads.

確かに、在庫や経費のいらないソーシャルコマースの一種とも言えるおもしろいアプローチだ。
