15 months in, here’s what we know about Skystar Ventures in Indonesia

Skystar Ventures is a startup incubator and co-working space in Tangerang, a city south of Jakarta. Skystar Capital is its venture capital arm. So far, it has invested in three Indonesian tech companies: Bridestory, Hijup, and Adskom.

Skystar is closely affiliated with the Kompas Gramedia Group, an Indonesian conglomerate that dates back to 1965 when Jakob Oetama founded the daily newspaper Kompas. Today, it includes the Gramedia publishing house, bookstores, and the Santika hotel chain, along with many other ventures in the archipelago.

Skystar Ventures社はジャカルタの南にある都市、タンゲランにあるスタートアップインキュベーター、そしてコワーキングスペースである。Skystar Capital社はそのベンチャーキャピタル部門である。現在までにBridestory社、Hijup社、Adskom社の三社に資金を提供している。

Skystar社は、1965年にJakob Oetama 氏が日刊新聞社Kompasを設立した時からの歴史を持つ複合企業であるKompas Gramedia Groupと深い関わりがある。現在、同グループはGramedia出版社、書店、Santikaホテルチェーンをはじめ、インドネシア群島全域に多くのベンチャー企業を抱えている。

Idea to execution

Still, of the five startups that joined Skystar’s first batch, only two are still active. One morphed into a branding agency called Dreambox while the other, Inigame, continues to work on its Indonesian language games portal. Both teams still use Skystar as their headquarters.

“Many of the first batch returned to their studies at the university,” says Oetama. She adds that the students in the incubator program are sometimes still enrolled and still have to face exams and final papers.

しかしながら、Skystarの第一期生となった五つのスタートアップのうち、現在も活動中なのはたった二つだ。一社はDreamboxというブランディングエージェンシーに姿を変え、もう一社はそのままInigameという独自のインドネシア語のゲームポータルサイトの開発に取り組んでいる。どちらのチームも未だSkystarを本社として利用している。

「第一期生の多くは大学の勉強に戻りました。」とOetama氏は言う。さらに彼女は、インキュベータプログラムに参加した生徒の中には大学に籍を置いたままで、まだ試験や卒論に取りかからなければ場合もあると付け足した。

“Indonesia’s startup scene is still early-stage,” says Oetama. “The interest and creativity from founders is there, but they still have so much to learn. At Skystar, because of our close affiliation to the university, we cater specifically to educating early-stage founders.”

In the future, Oetama seeks to establish closer relationships with other universities in the neighborhood. “When UMN opened this campus in 2008, it was practically the sole building on an empty field,” she recalls.

Asian startup schools unite: Taipei’s Alpha Camp acquires Singapore’s Pragmatic Lab

Two startup schools in Asia are embracing team spirit over classroom rivalry. The Pragmatic Lab, a coding academy based in Singapore, announced today that it has been acquired by Taipei’s Alpha Camp, another startup education program. The size and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

アジアにある二つのスタートアップ養成スクールがこの度ライバル校という関係を越えて一つになることになった。シンガポールを拠点とするコーディング専門学校のPragmatic Labは今日、同じくスタートアップ教育プログラムを展開する台北のAlpha Campの傘下に入る事を発表した。その規模や条件については明らかにされなかった。

Pragmatic Lab and Alpha Camp offer similar programs for their students. Recent college graduates or job switchers looking to master a new skill set and work for a startup can enroll in programs for coding or business development. The organizations also form ties with local entrepreneurs and investors in order to introduce students into the local startup network.

Pragmatic LabとAlpha Campは学生に向けて同様のプログラムを提供する。新たにスキルを身に付けてスタートアップに取り組もうと考えている大学新卒者や転職活動者がコーディングや事業開発のプログラムに参加することができる。また、この2校は地元のスタートアップネットワークに学生を紹介すべく、地元の起業家や投資家とも提携している。

Pragmatic Lab was founded in 2011 by Sidwyn Koh, who previously led the iOS development team at Roomorama, a vacation propery rental app that raised US$2 million in funding in 2012. Alpha Camp, meanwhile, launched in February 2014 after Yahoo! Hong Kong alumnus Bernard Chan graduated from a similar bootcamp back in the States.

It’s not often that we hear of startup schools acquiring other startup schools. But like any other industry, competition in education is fierce, and many of these training institutes have taken on venture capital funding. General Assembly, the most famous startup school of its kind, has raised US$49.5 million to date. The New York-based firm has been active in Hong Kong for years and will soon launch in Singapore with support from IDA, a government agency in charge of the infocommunications industry.

2 Chinese entrepreneurs seek a global hit with app that blends Instagram and Medium

What do you do when you have a bunch of photos to share that you took today? You could use Instagram, but it feels so fragmented. You could write a blog, but that sounds like too much effort. You could post them to Facebook, but you’d like to add a few words for some of the photos. You could post them to Flickr, but it’s not 2005. So what options are left?

Following Microsoft, Amazon introduces a cloud service for machine learning

Amazon Web Services, the largest public cloud in the market, debuted a service today that developers can use to introduce machine learning into their applications.

Andy Jassy, the head of the Amazon cloud, spoke about the new service, Amazon Machine Learning, at the 2015 AWS Summit in San Francisco. It’s available today. This is not the most surprising development in the cloud world, considering that Microsoft announced its own similar service, Azure Machine Learning, last June.

Microsoft 社に続き、Amazon社がクラウド上での機械学習サービスを開始。

市場で最大のパブリッククラウドであるAmazon Web Serices が本日、開発者が自身のアプリケーションに機械学習（マシンラーニング）を組み込むことのできるサービスの提供を開始した。

Amazon クラウドを率いるAndy Jassy氏がサンフランシスコで開催されている2015 AWS Summitの席で新規サービスであるAmazon Machine Learningについて明らかにした。同サービスは本日から利用可能だ。昨年の6月にMicrosoft社が同様の独自サービス、Azure Machine Learning発表した事を考えれば、この件はクラウド業界において驚くべき一大発明、というわけではない。

It will be interesting to see how Google, the other company in the triad of leaders in the cloud infrastructure market — and arguably one of the most significant machine learning companies in the world — will respond to Microsoft and now Amazon making cloud services anyone can use to train models and make predictions as a managed cloud service.

Israeli augmented reality startup nabs $5M funding led by Japanese Pachinko company

Israeli augmented reality startup InfinityAR announced today it has completed a US$5 million series B funding round led by Japan’s SUN Corporation, followed by New Zealand’s Singulariteam and US-based Platinum Partners Value Arbitrage Fund.

Weird science (so far)

There’s a big problem with this career: supply and demand. If you’re a qualified data scientist or working on getting there, this is in your favor. There simply aren’t enough skilled data scientists to fill the growing demand for them. McKinsey and Company reports that by 2018, there will be 140,000-190,000 job postings that go unfulfilled. Worse (for the companies), there will be 1.5 million managers needed to optimize available data. In other words, the next three years is a veritable gold mine for data scientists. However, this disparity won’t last for long.

How this 14-year-old girl designed, developed, and released her own mobile game

When I was 14, the coolest thing I made was a 2-by-4 piece of wood that had a wedge in it. I used it to take off my snowy or muddy boots without having to use my hands. I wasn’t crafty, but it turns out now all 14-year-old kids aren’t like me — at least when it comes to code.

Crazy Block is a new free Android game available right now on Google Play. It’s also the creation of 14-year-old Spanish girl Lucia Sanchez, who taught herself how to develop a game and released it earlier this month all on her own. She is the latest example of how open tools and platforms are enabling anyone with the will to make game and find an audiences.

私が14歳の時に作ったものの中で最も素晴らしかったのは、ツーバイフォー材にくさびを打ち込んだ物だ。雪や泥で汚れたブーツを手を使わずに脱ぐのに、私はこの道具を使ったのだ。私は決して小知恵がきく子ではなかったが、今では14歳の子供が皆自分と同じではないという事が分かる。少なくとも、プログラミングという分野においては。

Crazy BlockはGoogle Playで今すぐに入手できる新しい無料のAndroid向けゲームだ。これも Lucia Sanchezという14歳のスペイン人少女が製作した物で、彼女は独学でゲームの開発方法を学び、誰の力も借りずに今月初めにゲームをリリースしたのだ。彼女はオープンツールやプラットフォームによって志あるものなら誰でもゲームを作り、利用者を獲得することができる、という事の最新例となっている。

Persistence pays off

Now, after running into any sort of difficulty is probably where I would’ve given up. But not Sanchez. Without classes and without a teacher looking over her shoulder, she pushed through and figured it out all on her own.

“I actually didn’t get any help,” Sanchez said. “The only help I had was YouTube videos and the Internet.”

Having a clear goal was a real benefit for Sanchez. From the beginning, she wanted to make something that she could release on phones. She understood the process and kept at it.

粘り強さの勝利

さて、もし私ならば何らかの困難に突き当たった時点で諦めてしまっていたかもしれない。しかし、Sanchezはそうはしなかった。講義を受ける事も、見守ってくれる先生に付く事もないまま、彼女は自分だけの力で最後までやり通し、答えにたどり着いた。

「実際、私は誰の助けも借りませんでした。」とSanchezは言う。「唯一、力を借りたのはYouTubeの動画とインターネットだけです。」

はっきりとしたゴールがあった事もSanchezにとって非常に良かった。彼女は始めから携帯電話上でリリースできるゲームを作りたかったのだ。彼女はその為のプロセスを理解し、根気よく取り組んだ。

Learning by doing

So far, Crazy Block has not reached “hit” status. It is sitting at around 150 installs, according to Sanchez. And while the game has ads, she says it isn’t making any money. But she doesn’t mind that.

“I think what I have learned from making a game is way more valuable than money,” she said.

And what did she learn? Well, I’ll let her explain.

今のところ、Crazy Blockはヒット作の域には達していない。Sanchezによればインストール数は150前後だそうだ。そしてゲームには広告が掲載されているが、彼女の話では、収入にはつながっていないそうだ。しかし、彼女はそんな事は気にしていない。

「ゲームを作る中で学んだ事はお金などよりずっと価値があります」と彼女は話した。

では彼女が学んだ事とは一体何だったのだろうか。彼女の説明を聞いてみよう。

But no matter how acute the ability of these young men and women to innovate, they still lack the decades of accumulated professional experience needed for a management role.

It may seem strange that I’m writing a piece on “things I wish I knew” at the age of 24, but having founded my first startup in my early teens, I have had the tremendous opportunity to accrue a great many failures. Below are five things (from many!) I wish I’d known earlier on to help avoid some critical pitfalls.

しかし、このような若者達の革新能力がいかに鋭くても、経営者という役を担うのに必要な、何十年にも渡って積み重ねたプロ経験というものは依然、不足している。

まだ24歳の私が「私が知っておきたかった事」についての記事を書くなど奇妙に映るかもしれないが、10代前半で初めてのスタートアップを立ち上げたことで、私は失敗を山ほど重ねる、という非常に大きな機会に恵まれたのだ。数々の致命的な落とし穴を避けるのに役立つ、私がもっと早く知っておきたかった5つ（他にもたくさんあるが！）の事を、下記で紹介しよう。

1. The difference between an entrepreneur and a CEO

The first crucial thing a young CEO needs to understand is the shift in role from being an entrepreneur to being a CEO. An entrepreneur is an engine for change; they are single-minded in breaking boundaries, bursting through doors, and disrupting industries. But a CEO is engaged in building the kind of company that will be around long enough to one day be disrupted itself. To do that, you need to be able to provide more structure and set a sustainable pace.

1. 起業家とCEOの違い

若いCEOがまず知っておくべき重要な事は、起業家とCEOの間には役割に変化が生じるという点だ。起業家は変革の原動力である。起業家は限界を打ち破り、いくつもの扉を開けて新しい世界に飛び込み、業界を席巻する事だけに精力を傾けている。しかし、CEOが従事しているのは企業を育てる事で、その種の企業は長期的に存在し、いつか席巻される側になる可能性がある。そのためには組織をより強固にし、持続可能なペースを設定する能力が必要となってくる。

As an entrepreneur, you have the luxury of thinking only of your own to-do list, but as a CEO you have to make sure everyone else is equipped to complete theirs, and that everything is synchronized to serve the wider needs of the company. An entrepreneur can galvanize friends and family to help in a crisis, but a CEO has to motivate and manage a team of people day in and day out. Too often today we look at young successful entrepreneurs as CEOs-in-waiting. The harsher truth is that the two do not necessarily go hand in hand and sometimes require directly contrasting skillsets. Before you even consider taking on the role of CEO, make sure you’re being honest about whether it’s the right fit.

起業家でいる場合は、自分がやるべき仕事だけを考えていれば良いという贅沢が与えられている。しかし、CEOともなれば、自分以外の全員がきちんとそれぞれの仕事を完遂できるか、また拡大していく会社のニーズを満たすべく全ての足並みが揃っているか、という事を確認していなければならない。起業家はいざという時には友人や家族に頼み込んで手伝ってもらうことができるが、CEOは来る日も来る日も社員にやる気を起こさせ、また管理しなければならない。昨今では成功を収めた若い起業家がCEOを目指す姿を目にすることがあまりにも多い。厳しい現実だが、起業家とCEOは必ずしも一致しておらず、時には正反対の能力が必要となる事がある。CEOになることを考えるより前にまずは自分がその役にふさわしいと本当に思っているのか、自分自身に問うてみてほしい。

3. People don’t see the world the way you do

This was one of the first and most crucial lessons I learned. As a young person, too often we assume that everyone thinks as we do, and this means our judgement is critically impaired. Whether you’re evaluating potential partnerships, hires, or even clients, you will run into inevitable issues if you make the mistake of thinking that people see any given situation through the same eyes that you do. Developing an ability to step out of your own viewpoint will ensure that you’re able to make more informed and objective decisions that will aid your long-term success.

3. 他人と自分では世の中の見え方が違っている

これは、私が学んだ中でまず最も重要な事の一つだ。若い時にはありがちだが、人は周りと自分が同じ様に考えると思いこんでおり、それはつまり我々の判断力が致命的に低い事を意味する。あらゆる状況で他者が自分と同じ見方をしていると誤解していては、将来起こりうる共同事業、雇用、そして見込客に至るまでを見定める際、いつも同じ問題に突き当たってしまうだろう。自分だけの視点から一歩視野を広げる能力を養う事で、より深い知識に基づく客観的な判断を下せるようになり、それが長期的に成功を収める助けとなるだろう。
