Suning Spoils For an E-Commerce Price War As it Shifts From China’s High Streets

History will soon come to be littered with retailers who failed to make the switch to the internet age, and instead declined to the point where their shelves gathered more dust than fingerprints, and cash registers fell silent. But China’s Suning (SHE:002024) is making it clear that it wants as significant a presence on the country’s e-commerce scene as on its city streets, starting a promotional price war aimed at its rival etailers of gadgets and home electronics.

インターネットの時代に舵を切ることに失敗して店の棚が客の手の跡ではなくホコリでまみれ、レジが黙ったままになる状態になるまで衰退する小売店がいずれ沢山出てくるだろうと予想されている。しかし中国の Suning (SHE: 002024) は、彼らが大都市の大通りで得ているのと同等の大きなプレゼンスをECにおいても獲得したいと考えていることをはっきり打ち出してきており、ガジェットや家電の競合店に対して価格競争となるキャンペーンを始めている。

Next week, on April 18th to 20th, Suning plans a sale on every item on its website – a promotional price battle that will put the pressure especially on Dangdang (NYSE:DANG) and 360Buy. To succeed in e-commerce, Suning is aiming to topple such internet upstarts, and put its bricks-and-mortar retailing skills to full use in the digital age. There’s no significance to those dates next week – it seems that Suning is just spoiling for a fight and some free publicity.

Suning this weekend tweeted on the social network Sina Weibo the orders of its chairman, Zhang Jindong, saying – in curiously militaristic language – that he had ordered an e-commerce “general offensive” by the company that would “not be just a marketing campaign,” but an all-out effort to gain market share from the B2C e-commerce elite. Suning exec Min Juanqing delivered the head honcho’s words on his own microblog [1]:

According to chairman Zhang’s instructions, for this full year it would not be a problem to achieve 20 billion RMB in sold items, but we implore the team to sprint towards 30 billion RMB.

That presumably includes High Street shops as well as its web retailing efforts, but that growth is being marked out as coming from its online store.

The CEO of rival Dangdang, Li Guojing, was unimpressed – yes, Weibo is a fun way to get some quality business bitchin’ – saying [2] that this “is 360Buy’s problem” – with the implication being because that site relies more on sales of electronics.

360Buy’s CEO and founder, Liu Qiangdong has cut back on his tweeting of late, and didn’t weigh in on the debate.

So, while bricks-and-mortar retailers are struggling in the UK and the US – with Comet, Circuit City, and Borders going down in recent years – Suning is determined to make the leap from mere commerce, to future-grabbing e-commerce. But of course, in China’s already mature and cut-throat industry, three days of price-cutting means nothing – the war will be won over years of ruinously expensive ad campaigns and major investments in logistics.

Gnip Now Providing Access to Social Data from Sina Weibo

Social data platform Gnip says its data is already being used by 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies to monitor social data from assorted services like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and many more. Today the Colorado-based company is announcing that it will be adding Chinese microblog Sina Weibo to that list.

This means that data from the Weibo API will be included in Gnip’s Enterprise Data Collector, and will feature things like URL expansion, format normalization, and duplicate exclusion.

ソーシャルデータプラットフォームのGnipによると、データは既にフォーチュン500の企業の90％で使われており、その目的は Twitter や Facebook、YouTube 等と連動するソーシャルデータをモニターするためだ。本日、コロラドを本社とするGnipは、そのデータリストに中国のミニブログサイト新浪微博を追加すると発表した。

つまり、微博のAPIからのデータはGnipのエンタープライズ・データ収集サーバに格納され、URLの拡張や形式の標準化、重複の除外などを通じて、特徴を出していく。

I had a chance to speak with the company’s COO and president, Chris Moody, today via telephone. I was to curious to learn a little bit more about why Gnip wanted to expand to specifically to Sina Weibo. He explained:

The plan to bring this source of data to market now is really driven 100 percent by our customer base. Our customers are usually enterprise level providers who take our data, do the analysis and insights and then pass it on to brands… This particular source rose to the top of the list as being an in-demand source; a very specific brand ‘ask.’ And I think we don’t completely understand what’s driving that yet, but 30 percent of our client base is international, and even domestically many clients are representing international brands that are very interested in the worldwide conversation about their brand, and not just the US and European discussions.

I was curious about whether or not there was a language barrier to this kind of business, and Chris explained that there is. But thankfully for Gnip, it’s a problem that usually their clients who are requesting data about conversation in specific languages, and are prepared to handle those.

I also asked Chris how working with Sina Weibo metrics might differ from dealing with data from its western microblog cousin, Twitter:

One thing we can definitely observe is that there’s a high volume of data, and our customers are certainly interested in high-volume data sets. Just the sheer volume makes it an intriguing source. What can you derive from this conversation aside from Twitter? Obviously it’s a very different audience so you’re hearing from a different segment of the population. It will be interesting to see what our customers derive from this.

Does Gnip plan to expand to more Chinese services in the future? While Chris couldn’t name specifics, he did note that Gnip “plans to have broader coverage in China.” He notes that there are different conversations taking place on different networks, and that the idea that one social network could cover the entire conversation is “not realistic.”

As we mentioned a couple of weeks back, there are over 1000 Sina Weibo enterprise accounts for overseas. That’s certainly one sign that companies want to engage in conversation with Chinese users. “The appetite for more and more diversity in terms of conversation is growing,” says Chris.

Big data is proving to be big business, and Gnip certainly looks to be capitalizing on that. Their clients are demanding more diverse conversation, and for them to be able to provide this will certainly help in finding insight into what China is saying online.

SXindeks is a keywords-based, real-time social media analytics platform that allows brands to understand who their influencers are, the sentiment of the community voice, the volume of tweets versus time period, etc. It also has a heat map to identify where the buzz is coming from geographically, but only tweets that are tagged with locations will be mapped. The information tracked and analyzed by SalingSilang’s SXindeks is particularly useful for brands. Beside knowing whether conversations are positive or negative, SXindeks’ tweet volume versus time chart allows brands to understand when is the best time to engage with Twitter followers.

The heat map will help to identify key locations of its influencers, which might be a hint that more offline activities should be done there.

SXindeks allows multiple users to be assigned to a campaign. An administrator can also assign a particular tweet to one of the staff who might be a better person to address the issue at hand. This way, social media becomes like a customer service tool. Didi Nugrahadi, one of the founders of SalingSilang told me previously that he has long wanted to do a platform business. I guess he finally has one now and it looks like a big one as there aren’t any (as far as I can see) other social media analytics focusing just on Bahasa Indonesia.
