Most startups should not be taking VC money — says the VC

Honing in on Asia, many of the startups coming out of the region are still “clones” — replicating business models from elsewhere and localising — that need to be able to defend aggressively and expand quickly in order to not be supplanted by competition. This, Paine argues, is one situation where VC money can really come in handy as opposed to bootstrapping.

But he also has some persuasive arguments as to why most startups should not take VC money at all; in fact, only two-three per cent should. This is before you get to the fact that most, even if they do want to raise, will never be successful in doing so anyway.

There is clearly a time and a place for bootstrapping, and in fact in most scenarios (97 per cent) this will be the only way forward because raising VC funding is not possible, or you simply don’t want to give away the equity — or be accountable to shareholders.

But if you do need and manage to raise VC funding, think of it as a war. And if you’re with a VC that isn’t there to check your desperate WhatsApp messages at 3AM when your world is falling apart (or seems to be), then perhaps you had better reassess that relationship — because it may just be the most important one your startup will ever have. I’m sure Paine would agree.

Flamestower and Roadie Tuner are just two successful hardware projects among a wealth of wildly popular crowdfunding campaigns. In 2012, Pebble Technology famously raised over $10 million from nearly 69 thousand backers for its eponymous smartwatch. This year, the company launched another campaign on Kickstarter for its new generation smartwatch – Pebble Time, raising over $20 million.

Other examples include Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset for video games invented by then 20 year-old Palmer Luckey. The device was dubbed as a breakthrough for the industry and over $2.4 million was raised on the Kickstarter platform. Subsequently, Oculus Rift was acquired by Facebook for $2 billion dollars.

Despite all the high-profile rags-to-riches stories in crowdfunding, pulling off a successful campaign is no easy feat.

“Crowdfunding is highly dependent on marketing,” said Jalgha. “You could have a brilliant project, but if it’s not exposed enough, it might easily die off and not succeed.”

“In the first few days of launch, a lot of marketing push is required to reach out to the media – this is what makes it or breaks it,” he continued.

To Kell, a crowdfunding campaign, while useful, is not the be all and end all for a company’s success.

“(Had we not done that), the $60,000 we raised on Kickstarter would not have been enough.”

During the manufacturing process in 2014, Kell lived in Shenzhen for several months, talking to as many people as he could and learning about the manufacturing process and product development cycle in China.

There are also lots of young entrepreneurs, both Chinese and Western, not to mention warm weather.

Shenzhen Cons:
While the city is still developing, costs are rapidly rising. There is also enormous competition for developers in the region, with giants like Tencent and Lenovo scrabbling to grab them up as quickly as they can.

However Xiaomi’s timing raises doubts. The initial peak in adoption for similar products is dropping, and the annualized yield of other popular funds fell from record high of over 7% to around 4%. Huoqibao currently offers 7-day annualized return rate of 4.95%, slightly higher than Yuebao’s, however, it is difficult to say whether they’ll be able to keep it up.

The face recognition startup that Jack Ma wants to use for selfie payments just got $25M in funding

Face++, a face recognition tech startup from Beijing, today announced it raised an additional US$25 million as part of its series B round that began in November last year (h/t to 36kr). The fresh funding brings the company’s series B to a total of US$47 million. Innovation Works and Ignition Partners contributed to the initial funding, while the more recent investors have not yet been disclosed.

More recently, Face++ was paraded in front of an audience at Cebit by none other than Alibaba founder Jack Ma. Ma demonstrated face recognition-enabled mobile payments, in which the user’s face is substituted for a password to buy something online. While this technology doesn’t yet exist for consumers, it’s only a matter of time before it’s implemented for real.

また近年、他ならぬAlibabaの創業者Jack Ma氏が、Cebit（ドイツのコンピュータエキスポ）にて観衆の前でFace++を紹介したのだ。Ma氏は顔認証を使ったモバイル決済システムを発表、オンラインショッピングの際にユーザの顔がパスワード代わりになるのだ。この技術はまだ消費者向けには使用されていないが、現実になるのも時間の問題だろう。

Each chirp lasts a couple of seconds, and the receiving device “listens” for a handful of notes played quickly in a certain order, in a certain range, and at a certain speed. While there are other easy ways of sharing files and data in real-time, such as Bluetooth, Chirp doesn’t require devices to pair in advance, there is no need to set up an account, and it’s ultimately a much quicker way of sharing files.
