100M users strong, Duolingo raises $45M led by Google at a $470M valuation to grow language-learning platform

Duolingo, the popular crowdsourced text translation tool, today announced that it has closed a $45 million round led by Google Capital at a valuation of $470 million. Previous investors Union Square Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers also joined in this new round.

This figure more than doubles the $38.3 million Duolingo has raised so far: a $3.3 series A round led by Union Square Ventured in October 2011, a $15 million series B round led by NEA in September 2012, and a $20 million series C round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in February 2014. Other notable investors include actor Ashton Kutcher and author Tim Ferriss.

Duolingo today also revealed its app now has over 100 million users — a company spokesperson confirmed with VentureBeat the milestone was passed just last week. The app had 60 million users in January 2014, meaning it is still seeing steady growth. Not only is Duolingo the most downloaded in the Education category on both Google Play and Apple’s App Store, more people now use the app to learn languages in the U.S. than in the country’s entire public school system.

“Because human tutors are scarce and expensive, we are using technology to give everyone access to a personalized education in a scalable way,” Duolingo co­founder and CEO Luis von Ahn said in a statement. When asked about his vision for the company going forward, von Ahn had a bit more to add.

In order to accomplish this, we are working to optimize the rate at which people acquire information, making the experience as entertaining as possible to help students persist, and we’re using machine learning to offer personalized learning experiences to each of our users. This was impossible with traditional education and has been mostly unexplored by other educational technologies.”

Duolingo will use Google Capital’s investment towards these goals, von Ahn also explained, and to help schools and governments improve their language classes. In January, Duolingo launched Duolingo for Schools, making its language-learning software available to teachers with a dashboard to track students.

Since then, Duolingo for Schools has registered over 100,000 teacher accounts. The company says some teachers have used the platform to substitute language textbooks, while others have apparently adopted the platform’s curriculum entirely. The pitch is simple: Students using Duolingo learn more on their own time thanks to the app’s real­-time feedback and game­-like interface, letting teachers use class time for general questions.

Duolingo hopes to use the new investment to make its platform “even more adaptive, personalized, and effective.” It will also work to expand the platform’s presence in schools across the globe.

Yet all of this raises the question: Why is Google so interested? Apparently, the company sees the startup as the future of online education.

Duolingoは今回の融資でプラットフォームを「さらに適応しやすく、個人に合わせた、効果の大きい」ものにしていきたいという。また、世界中の学校でのプラットフォームの採用拡大も進むことだろう。

だが、ここで疑問が生じる。なぜ、Googleがこれほどに関心をもっているのだろうか？明らかに、GoogleはDuolingoをオンライン教育の将来として考えている。

It goes deeper than that. Unlike other educational platforms, Duolingo does not rely on merely playing back videos, which is hardly an engaging experience for students or teachers. Other educational tools also don’t collect much data to figure out what needs to be improved.

Xiao Dian Bao wants to take the kind of personal communication common between ecommerce merchants and their customers and make it relevant to offline stores.

The pitch was a bit of a head-scratcher because it sounds like it’s only the owners of tiny shops who’d communicate with customers in person over social media, but then the presentation mentioned partnering with huge chain stores.
The startup used the English name Shopal in the pitch, but that already belongs to a Japanese startup. We’ve used the Chinese name to avoid confusion.

Xiao Dian Bao
Xiao Dian Baoはeコマース業者と顧客と個人的なコミュニケーションが取れる広場のようなものを提供し、オフラインでの商店と関連づけていきたいという。

話を聞くと、ソーシャルメディアを通じて顧客と個人的に連絡を取れるのは小さな商店のオーナーくらいしかできないように感じるため、やや難題ではないかと思われた。しかし、話は続き、大手チェーン店との提携について述べたのだ。
Xiao Dian Baoは英語名のShopalという名前を話の中で使っていたが、既に日本のスタートアップに同じ名前の企業がある。混乱を避けるため、当記事では中国名を使用した。

Robin8
Robin8 is a data-driven platform for brands to connect with bloggers and influencers. It’s aimed at the China market, where CEO Miranda Tan says the world of content marketing is hampered by a lack of trust and no clear way of rating a “key opinion leader” (KOL).

So the idea behind Robin8 is that it attaches data to a KOL to help brand managers get marketing material out there through the most effective bloggers and reporters. Tan’s pitch dubbed this a “marketplace of KOLs” in the manner of Airbnb.

Robin8の考えはデータをKOLに提供し、最も効果のあるブロガーやレポーターたちからブランドマネージャーがマーケティング素材を得られるようサポートする。Tan氏はスピーチの中でこれをAirbnbのような「KOLのマーケットプレイス」と呼称していた。

This sounds ethically problematic if “reporters” are republishing content marketing-style articles straight from brands, but it’s not clear if that’s what the end result might be. This could equally be a more effective way of pitching press releases to the most relevant bloggers and journalists.

Tan said the Robin8 platform scans tens of thousands of news articles each day in order to determine who are the influencers in particular areas.

The company listed on the NASDAQ in November 2013, when it raised US$167 million. It hasn’t made a profit since the IPO.
Qunar doubled its revenues in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the same period last year for a total of US$108.3 million, according to the company’s first quarter earnings report released today. Revenues from mobile devices represented nearly 60 percent of that.
The company’s biggest source of revenue is flight bookings, followed by hotel reservations.

Qunarは2013年11月にNASDAQに上場、1億6700万米ドルの融資を受けた。IPO（新規公開株）以来、利益を出していない。

Ctrip merger still on the table
Last month, China’s largest online travel booking company, Ctrip, offered to acquire Qunar. Qunar included its response in today’s earnings report to quell rumors:
After careful consideration of such offer, we declined to pursue it in a letter response dated June 1, 2015. However, consistent with our policy to consider all potential strategic opportunities that may benefit our company and our shareholders, we remain open to engaging in further discussions with Ctrip as well as with other strategic players in our sector.

Ctripとの合併、未だ検討中
先月、中国の最大手オンライン旅行予約企業Ctripが、Qunarの買収を申し出た。Qunarは今日の収益報告の中でその反応を返しており、今回の噂を否定した。
今回の申し出につきまして検討を重ねた結果、2015年6月1日付の書面にて見送らせていただく旨をお伝えしました。しかし、Ctrip様の申し出は弊社のあらゆる戦略の機会を模索するという方針に合致したものであり、実現すれば弊社及び株主様にとって利益のあるものと考えておりますので、今後、Ctrip様及び他の戦略的同業者様との協力のお話はお受けしていく予定です。

Qunar is a portfolio company of Baidu, another giant that runs China’s most popular search engine. Both Baidu and Tencent, along with Alibaba, make up the trifecta of Chinese web titans that largely shape the course of the country’s internet.

Ctrip last month purchased a US$400 million stake in Elong, another popular flight and hotel booking service in China. Those shares were purchased from US-based Expedia, which sold its US$671 million majority stake in the company. Expedia’s biggest rival, Priceline, owns a 10 percent stake in Ctrip.

If Ctrip were to acquire Qunar, it will have absorbed all but the smallest contenders in China.

Ctripは先月、中国の人気フライト・ホテル予約サービスを展開するElongの4億米ドルの株式を購入した。この株はアメリカのExpediaから購入したものであり、ExpediaはElongの株式の過半数の6億7100万米ドルを売却した。Expediaの最大のライバルPricelineはCtripの株式を10%所有している。

もしCtripがQunarを買収すれば、中国の全てかつ最小の競合他社を吸収したことになる。

Update on June 3, 2015: Ctrip has publicly responded to Qunar’s rejection, saying it is no longer interested in pursuing an acquisition. While Qunar says it received an “unsolicited” offer from Ctrip, Ctrip claims it sent a confidential preliminary proposal after being approached by Qunar. Clearly, Ctrip isn’t pleased with how Qunar handled the situation.

2015年6月3日更新： Ctripは公式にQunarの断りに対して反応し、今後買収の意志はないと話した。QunarがCtripから「頼んでもいない」申し出を受けたと語っている一方で、CtripはQunarのアプローチを受け、内密に事前提案を送ったと主張している。明らかに、CtripはQunarの対応を好ましく思っていないだろう。

Much has been written about this one, but does the recent Salesforce bid tell us anything about the likelihood about a play for Dropbox? The two have a whole list of similarities from a Microsoft perspective. Dropbox is to storage what Salesforce is to CRM. Both Dropbox and Salesforce have pursued a path of tight integration of their platforms with Microsoft – Dropbox, in particular, has gone to great lengths to ensure that its platform integrates seamlessly with Office, owing to the large amount of its customers’ storage that is accounted for by Office files.

これについてはよく書かれてきたが、最近のSalesforce買収を見るとDropboxへのアプローチについても同様のことが言えるだろうか？この2社はMicrosoftの視点からすると似た者同士リストの全てを持ち合わせている。Dropboxがストレージなら、SalesforceはCRMだ。DropboxもSalesforceもMicrosoftと共にプラットフォーム統合の道を辿ってきた―Dropboxは特に、Officeと一体となってプラットフォーム統合に向け全力を投じている。顧客の使用しているストレージの大多数がOfficeのファイルで占められていることからもわかる。

By that same token, Dropbox and Salesforce both share a huge number of customers with Microsoft and those same shared goals again of enabling productivity in the cloud and on mobile. It is also safe to say that Dropbox and Salesforce have outperformed OneDrive and Dynamics quite significantly and have become the de facto standards in their fields, with huge user numbers – Dropbox currently has 300 million+ users and 88,000 paying companies on its books. So, with so much in common, the question becomes why wouldn’t Microsoft make a bid for Dropbox just like it did for Salesforce?

同じく、DropboxもSalesforceもMicrosoftと実に多くの顧客を共有しており、ここでもクラウドとモバイル分野での生産性強化という目標を共にしていることも同じだ。また、DropboxとSalesforceはOneDriveとDynamicsを遥かにしのぎ、事実上それぞれの分野の基準となっていると言って間違いないだろう。ユーザ数も膨大だ―Dropboxは現在、3億人以上のユーザを抱え8万8000社がDropboxの会計に貢献している。よって、これだけ多くの共通点があれば疑問が湧くことだろう。MicrosoftがSalesforceと同様にDropboxにも買収を持ちかけない理由があるだろうか？

Well, it may be that Microsoft has more confidence in the potential of OneDrive than it has in Dynamics. It might also be true that the storage market is more commoditized than CRM, and while Salesforce has a differentiated offering that would be very difficult to replicate in Dynamics, it might be more feasible that OneDrive can catch up with Dropbox from a user experience perspective.

なお、MicrosoftはDynamicsよりもOneDriveのポテンシャルに自信を持っているようだ。また、ストレージ市場はCRMよりも商品化が進むことも間違いなく、SalesforceはDynamicsにはマネしにくいサービスで差別化を図ろうとしている一方で、OneDriveがユーザエクスペリエンスの観点からDropboxに追いつくことも十分ありえる。
