XNode: World Class Co-Working Spaces For Tech In China
In a 2013 trip to San Francisco, TechNode’s founder Dr. Gang Lu listened in on a speech from Ducan Logan, the founder of Rocket Space, about the benefit of co-working spaces. Despite rapid growth in the number of competitive tech startups over the past few years, China’s office culture couldn’t be more distant from Silicon Valley, so Gang decided to bring co-working spaces home with him.

The first all-Liquid Metal phone, the Turing, opens for preorders July 31

The Turing phone will be the first phone on the market with a complete Liquid Metal shell. The phone goes into preorder July 31 for customers in the U.S. and China.

While the iPhone 6 and other phones use shell materials (like aluminum) that can bend, good luck bending the Liquidmorphium Turing phone.

Liquidmorphium is a material stronger than both titanium and steel and disperses shock much more efficiently. If you apply enough pressure to the material, it will break, but it will not bend. The material also reflects light very differently from aluminum and stainless steel.

Until now, Turing Robotic Industries CEO S.Y.L. Chao told me, nobody’s been able to manufacture pieces of Liquidmorphium of more than 10 millimeters. The iPhone 6 uses Liquid Metal only in the SIM card slot, although Chao believes the shell of the iPhone 7 will likely be made with Liquidmorphium.

Chao says his company invented a new manufacturing process for mass-producing the new material.

Reporters, copy editors, and fact checkers were expensive, and their work was time-intensive. But Forbes bought a startup, True/Slant, which allowed it to recruit an army of freelance contributors. The freelancers used the platform to easily create their own WordPress-based accounts and publish their own stories, getting paid small amounts based on metrics that Forbes wanted to reinforce. Rather than paying for page views from readers who never returned to the site, Forbes incentivized writers to get the same reader back five times or ten times. The writers could reach out on social platforms and help spread the word.

Now, Forbes has 1,500 freelance contributors, and they publish 300 to 400 original stories a day. That has created tremendous search-engine-optimization (SEO) results for the Forbes content, which gives it great standing in Google search results. In fact, 60 percent of the traffic from the stories comes from search. And the platform works well on mobile, and is generating loyal readers because the freelancers are incentivized to produce quality articles, rather than “click bait.”

The strategy was focused on Google, Howard said.

“In terms of traffic acquisition, it turned out that way,” he explained. “Many publishers try to milk Facebook and others. For us, it is not the primary source of traffic. We recognize the search algorithms change all of the time, but this is on brand for us.”

Now, about 70 percent of Forbes’ revenue comes from digital sources, and 10 percent of the digital revenue comes from mobile. While mobile is 50 percent of overall traffic, the mobile revenue is only about 10 percent.

Mobile revenue is only about 20 percent of the monetizable inventory. Web-based ads on the desktop allow for deeper engagement, and Forbes can also put more ads per page on a desktop page. Still, the company isn’t panicking about this situation. It believes that it is making progress in closing the gap between mobile traffic and mobile revenue. Howard said the company is working with mobile monetization companies to try to accomplish this.

Forbes has no pay wall, and most readers never log in or register. But they come back.

I’m sold! When should I set up shop?

Most of the founders I spoke to believe that the best time to set up shop is after an initial seed round has been raised and the engineering team needs to be expanded. Otherwise, unless the whole team is relocating, most teams find it difficult to coordinate a distributed workforce especially when the product or service does not yet have “interesting” traction. Either way, it is important to not see this as outsourcing, but instead as the chance to develop an integral tech team, and the management – or at least the CTO – will need to spend a significant amount of time with the team to get it ramped up.

When you do come, it will be of course much easier if you are part of a community such as 500 Startups, which has a thriving Taiwanese founder community, but others have found it productive to attend local meetups or hackathons to meet motivated and skilled developers. One of the newest initiatives looking to bridge precisely this gap is Taiwan Startup Stadium, a startup service provider with ample space and programming to help Taiwanese startups to expand globally and for global startups to come to Taiwan.

Bernard Chan of Alpha Camp, a developer bootcamp for aspiring programmers, told me that current annual cash compensation (excluding stock options and other benefits) for those with less than two years experience ranged from NT$560,000 to NT$840,000 (US$18,000 to US$27,000) in Taiwanese startups. A far cry, certainly, from the six-figure salaries currently being thrown around Silicon Valley these days, and indeed on average looks to be one-third or less of what Valley prices are.

But what about Taiwan versus neighboring mainland China? Aside from the fact that China is no longer particularly cheap (according to recent statistics, about half at the junior level are quickly ramping up to be on par with Silicon Valley levels at a dozen years or so of experience), it is also very competitive, whereas Taiwan’s job market is significantly less overheated. Although I do not have detailed data on turnover rates, it certainly feels that anecdotally, my founders managing teams in Taiwan worry far less about the stability of their teams than those operating primarily in mainland China.
