Alibaba inks deal with Mad Men and Hunger Games studio for exclusive content on its set-top box in China

Chinese ecommerce titan Alibaba today signed a deal with Canadian-American production studio Lionsgate (NYSE:LGF) to give Alibaba’s smart TV OS users in China exclusive streaming access to the latter’s content, according to Alibaba’s official English-language blog Alizila.

Users of Tmall’s set-top box in China next month will be able to watch shows and movies like Mad Men, Twilight, and The Hunger Games if they subscribe to the “Lionsgate Entertainment World” channel. A Lionsgate representative told Alizila that some of the studio’s video is already licensed to other video platforms in China, but this paid subscription service will give viewers “behind-the-scenes footage and premium content not available anywhere else in China.”

Alibaba’s first set-top box, the Wasu Rainbow, went on sale in September 2013.

Alibaba has jumped headlong into procuring exclusive content directly from production studios. Last month, it announced it would create a new financial product that allows anyone to invest as little as RMB 100 (US$16) and up to RMB 2,000 (US$320) in a select movie of their choice. Those deposits are bundled into the company’s wealth management and insurance products that pay a fixed interest rate.

But the deal with Lionsgate comes at an uncertain time for STB makers. Yesterday, Techweb reported the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television would try to ban unlicensed content distributors – mainly video portals like Youku, iQiyi, and LeTV – from being pre-installed on set-top boxes. This in turn would promote the handful of state-backed content providers, including CNTV, Hunan TV, and CIBN. The gap between pronouncement and implementation is always a big one in China, however, so set-top box makers and their video partners seem unphased.

Xiaomi teases launch of next flagship smartphone on July 22, promises it’s made of a hunk of metal

Xiaomi’s flagship phone, the Mi3, was revealed last September and started shipping in October. But it appears the Chinese phone-maker is speeding up its annual cycle for the next flagship – that’s because Xiaomi founder Lei Jun today teased the launch of the ‘4’, presumably the successor to the Mi3, on July 22.

The accompanying image in Lei’s Weibo post (hat-tip to The Next Web’s Jon Russell for spotting this) explains that the mysterious ‘4’ gadget (possibly to be dubbed the Mi4) will be made of a “single block of metal”. There are no more details at present.

The metal reference suggests Xiaomi is aiming at better quality for its flagship phone, despite an affordable price-tag that will likely be around RMB 2,000 (US$320). The current Mi3 has been described as “disappointingly plasticky” and flimsy.

Xiaomi sold 10 million Mi3 smartphones in the nine months since its release, Lei Jun said last week. The phone-maker reached a total 26.1 million phone sales in the first six months of 2014 – which is greater than the 18.7 million it sold in 2013. The 2014 target is 60 million.

Alipay had already launched a tax reimbursement service for Chinese tourists shopping in South Korea since October last year. The users only need to fill in the mobile phone numbers they registered with Alipay, passport number and English name getting it stamped and dropping off at specified post box at airport customs. The users can receive the refunds in their Alipay accounts after seven working days.

In China’s Weirdly Regulated Connected TV Content Market, Xiaomi Set-top Box Lost Lawsuit against Content Right Holder LeTV

Last week Xiaomi lost lawsuit against LeTV over online video rights. It seems it has something to do with the fact that the two are direct competitors in smart TV and set-top boxes, but the dispute over video content aroused much discussion in China.

SARFT, the state ministry for television, radio, film and publication, only allows seven organizations to provide over-the-top video content and another seven to provide videos for connected TV or set-top boxes. All of the 14 organizations, such as ICNTV, are state-backed and overseen by SARFT.

Thus SARFT created a new category of license requiring all the connected devices that are able to display video content on TV screen to provide content from the 14 licensees.

Xiaomi learned its first lesson shortly after the launch of Xiaomi Box, which, like Xiaomi smartphone and most connected devices, includes several pre-installed video apps which are popular ones in China but didn’t include any licensees granted by SARFT.

Now offering content from authorized source brought Xiaomi trouble again. It is reported that the illegitimate content delivered through the Xiaomi Box was from CNTV. What’s confusing is LeTV didn’t sue ICNTV but Xiaomi. What makes it more confusing is the court ruled that Xiaomi Box infringed the copyright.
