You can set a daily goal for how many steps you aim to take, which by default is set at 8,000. Depending on your progress, making a gesture as if you’re looking at a wristwatch will prompt the Mi Band to light up in your preferred color: one light for one-third, two lights for two-thirds, three lights for goal completed. The lights can be difficult to see in direct sunlight.

Wakeup alarms in the app unfortunately don’t sync with any other alarm apps you might have installed. The alarm gently vibrates three times and then turns off. There’s no snooze or option to make it keep vibrating until you give some sort of input, like a tap or other gesture. If it doesn’t wake you right away, then you’d better have a backup alarm ready.

The Mi Band can also be set to vibrate after a missed call, but no other notifications from apps or SMS are available. This was a bit of a disappointment, and seems like an obvious use case that should have been included. I found that by adjusting the missed call alert settings so that it buzzes just three seconds after an incoming call, it effectively lets me know when someone is calling me immediately rather than after I’ve actually missed it.

I expect the stingy use of vibration and lights was designed to preserve battery. It’s apparently worked, as the Mi Band boasts an impressive 30-day battery life. That’s a far cry from the Fitbit’s four-day charge and the Jawbone’s 10. When it is running low, a few minutes on the charger is all you need for several more days of power. That means less stress about whether or not it’s about to die, and more time spent actually wearing the device and collecting useful data.

If you can get it to stay connected, anyway. This one major issue spoiled an otherwise satisfactory experience. My phone’s connection to the Mi Band on several occasions randomly ran into connectivity problems with Bluetooth. The app would say the Mi Band is disconnected, and no amount of refreshes would make it reconnect despite both my phone and the Mi Band having sufficient power. A combination of waiting until it somehow sorted itself out, un-pairing and re-pairing the devices, and switching my phone’s Bluetooth on and off eventually fixed the problem, but much of the data from the day had gone missing.

I can’t verify whether this is a persistent problem across all devices, or if it’s just an isolated incident with my phone and Mi Band. But it’s growing to be a rather frustrating dealbreaker for me.

The app and metrics

The Mi Band app opens to a step counter and feed of your recent sleep cycles and walking activity. You can track previous days’ steps, how far you’ve walked, and how many calories you’ve burned. For sleep cycles, the Mi Band monitors how long you slept and for how long you were in a “deep sleep.” The app does little to advise on how the users can improve their daily cycles, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing for those who just want a clear cut readout and not a robot coach.

Xiaomi Android Button Mi Key Integrates Chinese Taxi App Kuaidi

Mi Key, the Pressy-like programmable physical button for Android devices developed by Xiaomi, has integrated Kuaidi, one of the leading taxi apps in China, that the latter can be opened with one button click.

If there’s no Kuaidi app in your Android phone, the Mi Key’s accompanying app will direct you to an app store to download and install it. Mi Key was launched in April this year as one of the Chinese clones of Pressy — The others include Qihoo 360′s Smart Button and Quick Button.

Those Chinese buttons have similar functions with Pressy’s, such as taking photos, switching on the torch and capturing screenshots. The Xiaomi Mi Key is sold for RMB4.9 (about US$0.8) — cheap enough.

Xiaomi said more integrations with third-party services like Kuaidi will be available later on.

The Qihoo’s button and Quick Button have been merged — It is reported that the former had invested the latter, and Qihoo decided earlier this month to give them away, hoping to have users adopt the company’s software products that have been integrated with the buttons or will be added later on, or channel users to other services of the company.

Vendors on board for the feature’s initial rollout include Dairy Queen, Guoda Pharmacies, department store chains Tianhong and Minsheng Baihuo, supermarket chains One Plus One and Lotus, convenience store chains Hao Lingju and Guoda 365, and childcare chain Aiyingshi. Tech in Asia has reached out to Tencent for more details on the terms of its partnerships with these outlets.

WeChat’s in-store payments feature resembles that that of Alibaba’s Alipay Wallet, which lets users pay for in-store goods by generating QR codes, bar codes, and sound waves. Alibaba told Tech in Asia that as of January, 30,000 individual brick-and-mortar outlets were accepting in-store payments through the app.

In-store mobile payments is an area hotly contested space by China’s tech giants. While Alibaba’s Alipay Wallet likely generates more gross merchandise volume because of its tie in with Alibaba’s long-standing escrow service, Tencent’s WeChat Payments got a huge boost in registrations thanks to a gifting campaign that went viral over Chinese New Year. Tencent’s recent US$814 million joint venture with Baidu and Wanda Group affirms its commitment to bringing mobile payments to the masses.

Xiaomi Has Revamped Its Mobile Messaging App MiTalk, Claiming It Has 70M Users

MiTalk, or Mi Liao in Chinese, the mobile messaging app by Xiaomi, launched today a major update, MiTalk 2015.

MiTalk was first launched in November 2010, earlier than the launch of Tencent’s WeChat. Back then when mobile messaging apps such as Kik and Talkbox got traction, a wave of Chinese clones, including MiTalk and Qihoo’s Kouxin, emerged. But before long Tencent’s WeChat would beat all of them in terms of users and popularity.

At an event in 2013, Lei Jun, co-founder and CEO of Xiaomi, said that WeChat was merely another Tencent QQ, the most popular instant messaging software in China, hinting that’s a major reason why most other mobile messaging apps had lost to WeChat. In Xiaomi’s estimation, they had a chance if Tencent launched a similar one half a year later but little chance within three months. WeChat was released two months after MiTalk launch.

Even after WeChat became dominant in China’s mobile messaging market, some Chinese Internet companies such as Alibaba and Netease thought there was still room or niche markets for them.

EasyChat, the chatting app jointly established by Netease and Chinese telco China Telecom, announced 100 million users earlier this year. Alibaba’s Lai Wang doesn’t get much traction, but it seems the company doesn’t want to give up – Its management are using it anyway.

Netease社と中国の通信会社China Telecomが共同でつくりあげたチャットアプリEasyChatは、1億人のユーザを獲得したと今年表明した。AlibabaのLai Wangはそこまでの人気は得ていないが、同社はあきらめたくはないようである。同社のマネジメント層はそれでもこのアプリを使っている。

Xiaomi never gave up on MiTalk, either. Mr. Lei said at the aforementioned event that he felt proud that MiTalk was still alive given the rise of WeChat. It seemed the company was counting on the growing Xiaomi phone users and other users of MIUI, the customized Android system for all Xiaomi smart devices and free for download. They may use MiTalk since it’s a built-in service and Xiaomi would make it tailored to its fans. It sounds reasonable. People that don’t agree must argue that the No. 1 communication tool will take it all, just like where QQ IM is.

Xiaomi claims MiTalk had had 70 million registered users as of H1 2014, with 7.5 million being daily active. The company announced last month that MIUI users reached 70 million worldwide. So the company just counts every MIUI user as registered? When it come to activeness, what’s for sure is the majority of Chinese users are using WeChat on a daily basis.

The MiTalk 2015, apart from functions and features for mobile messaging, has integrated Chinese music streaming service Xiami, Xiaobing (a Siri-like service developed by Microsoft China), Baidu Maps, and Xiaomi’s online forum and shopping site. A location-based feature now is a must for a mobile app that MiTalk users now are able to find people or merchants nearby.

The shopping site integration allows for buying Xiaomi products without leaving the chatting app. The Xiaomi forum is another form of group chatting. Other features include making customized song tracks that can be shared among MiTalk contacts.

Social elements have been introduced to engage users. Users who play games or take on tasks, or active users on Xiaomi online forum will receive Mi Coins, the virtual money used on Xiaomi’s online sites or services, or other rewards such as F code, the invitation code for Xiaomi product purchas. There’s a tab in the app that shows a user’s virtual properties.

It took one year to develop the new Mitalk app, according to Xiaomi.

The app, apart from Xiaomi’s own site, will be available on Android app stores of Baidu, Tencent, Qihoo 360 and many other major Chinese app distribution platforms from tomorrow on.

When it comes to PC-based instant messaging software, what has happened in China is almost all IMs created by Chinese Internet companies, such as Baidu, Netease and Sina, lost to Tencent’s QQ. Microsoft MSN Messenger was an exception that was actually popular among white-collars and college students for several years. We’ll see what to happen to mobile messaging apps in China.

Ironically, Apple’s tech wizardry may be its achilles heel in China. The technology Alibaba and Tencent use for in-store payments is decidedly lo-fi. Alibaba utilizes sound-wave transfers and barcodes, while Tencent requires vendors to scan QR codes. This easy technology helps reduce the barrier to adoption among consumers, regardless of what type of phone they carry. Apple’s reliance on NFC therefore means Chinese merchants must accept yet another form of payment processing. That might be too much of a hassle.

A more likely scenario involves Alibaba and Tencent rushing to get on the NFC bandwagon following Apple’s signal. Alipay Wallet and WeChat payments would add NFC functionality in their apps alongside the usual payment methods, and will continue to provide compatible processing equipment to retailers for little or no cost. This will help Apple catch up technology-wise as a latecomer. But smartphone manufacturers are likely to jump on the NFC bandwagon even more quickly than Alibaba or Tencent.

より可能性の高いシナリオは、AlibabaとTencentが、Appleの後を追い、NFC普及の波に乗るというものである。Alipay WalletとWeChatは従来の支払い方法に加えてNFC機能を加える可能性があり、対応する支払機器を、小売店に安価または無料で供給することを続けるかもしれない。これは、Appleが技術的に遅れた形で追いつくチャンスを与えるかもしれない。しかし、スマートフォンメーカーは、AlibabaやTencentよりさらに早く、NFC装備の動きに乗ってくる可能性が高い。
