I found the gesture for activating the three LED lights to be quite tricky at times. If you don’t do it just right – move your hand from a hanging position at your side to a wristwatch posture in front of your body – it won’t light up at all. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get just right, and it’s a bit inconvenient from a sitting position.

The tracker seems well-made and durable, which is not something I’m accustomed to saying about Xiaomi products. The accompanying band might need replacing after a few months, though.

Best value for your money

On the whole, I would recommend the Mi Band as a great entry-level wearable for those that don’t want to make a big monetary commitment into their first fitness tracker. It could also be an excellent gift for any Android-wielding friends and family, even the less tech-savvy ones.

It doesn’t do anything new, but it doesn’t lack any major features of its pricier competitors, either. Frankly, unless there’s a specific feature or third-party app that you just can’t part with on the Fitbit Flex and Jawbone Up, I can’t see any real justification for buying them over the Mi Band. I don’t think Xiaomi is going to convert users of other fitness trackers out there, but at just US$13, it could easily steal away the majority of first-time buyers and those looking to upgrade from their old school pedometers. As long as it can keep up with demand, that is.

For now the Mi Band is only availabe for sale in China through Xiaomi’s website. No dates have been announced for other countries, but the English app UI tells us it won’t be contained for long.

Xiaomi Mi Band: at just $13, all flaws are forgiven (REVIEW)

The wild world of wrist-worn wearables will, with the advent of Apple Watch, hopefully reach a saturation point and start to consolidate. The full potential of wearables is far from being realized, and the current status quo does very little to excite. Fitness bands, in particular, are basically just smartphone-connected rehashes of your mom’s mall-walking pedometer.

A few leaders are emerging, though. The latest contender comes from Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, dubbed the Mi Band. I’ve been wearing the Mi Band over the last few days to find out if it’s more than a glorified step counter. But first, let’s compare the features side-by-side with the Jawbone Up and Fitbit Flex:

While the MiBand hardware looks to be on par with its competitors, the app is less feature-rich, opting instead for a straightforward readout of metrics rather than giving suggestions on how to improve. For the time being, it’s not compatible with any third-party fitness apps like Run Keeper and Map My Fitness. Also, the app is for Android only; no iOS version is available.

The Mi Band’s biggest selling point is obviously price. At just RMB 79 (US$13), it comes in at just a fraction of the cost of the Jawbone’s jaw-dropping US$79.99 and the Fitbit’s fatcat US$99.95 price tags.

Also, Xiaomi smartphone owners get an extra perk: the Mi Band will automatically unlock your phone if you hold them near each other. That’s the only gimmick that other Android phone owners don’t get.

Functionality

Once the Mi Band app is downloaded and installed, it will automatically switch to your phone’s set language, either Chinese or English. Pairing the Mi Band to your phone via Bluetooth is quick and painless, requiring just a few quick taps to set up. Enter a few personal stats like age, height, and weight, and you’re on your way. No need to take your phone with you on a walk or run; the app will automatically sync as soon as you’re back in Bluetooth range.

機能性

You can set a daily goal for how many steps you aim to take, which by default is set at 8,000. Depending on your progress, making a gesture as if you’re looking at a wristwatch will prompt the Mi Band to light up in your preferred color: one light for one-third, two lights for two-thirds, three lights for goal completed. The lights can be difficult to see in direct sunlight.

Wakeup alarms in the app unfortunately don’t sync with any other alarm apps you might have installed. The alarm gently vibrates three times and then turns off. There’s no snooze or option to make it keep vibrating until you give some sort of input, like a tap or other gesture. If it doesn’t wake you right away, then you’d better have a backup alarm ready.

The Mi Band can also be set to vibrate after a missed call, but no other notifications from apps or SMS are available. This was a bit of a disappointment, and seems like an obvious use case that should have been included. I found that by adjusting the missed call alert settings so that it buzzes just three seconds after an incoming call, it effectively lets me know when someone is calling me immediately rather than after I’ve actually missed it.

不在着信があると、Mi Bandが振動して知らせてくれるように設定することもできるが、アプリやSMSなどでの、それ以外のお知らせ機能はない。これはわりと残念であり、当然機能に含まれるべき使用状況であろう。原文筆者は、お知らせ設定を着信の直後、3秒後に設定しようとして気づいた。もし着信を実際に取り逃した後でなく、着信しているときすぐに知らせてくれれば、より効果的であろう。

I expect the stingy use of vibration and lights was designed to preserve battery. It’s apparently worked, as the Mi Band boasts an impressive 30-day battery life. That’s a far cry from the Fitbit’s four-day charge and the Jawbone’s 10. When it is running low, a few minutes on the charger is all you need for several more days of power. That means less stress about whether or not it’s about to die, and more time spent actually wearing the device and collecting useful data.

このような、振動と光のけちくさい使い方は、電池持ちをよくするためのことだと想像する。Mi Bandは30日というすばらしい電池持ちを誇っており、実際効果をあげているようだ。これはFitbitの4日、Jawboneの10日よりはるかに優れている。また、電池がなくなりそうなときには、充電器に数分のせることで、あと数日持たせることもできる。つまり、電池がいつ切れるかという心配から解放され、より長時間の着用と有用なデータの収集が可能になる。

If you can get it to stay connected, anyway. This one major issue spoiled an otherwise satisfactory experience. My phone’s connection to the Mi Band on several occasions randomly ran into connectivity problems with Bluetooth. The app would say the Mi Band is disconnected, and no amount of refreshes would make it reconnect despite both my phone and the Mi Band having sufficient power. A combination of waiting until it somehow sorted itself out, un-pairing and re-pairing the devices, and switching my phone’s Bluetooth on and off eventually fixed the problem, but much of the data from the day had gone missing.

I can’t verify whether this is a persistent problem across all devices, or if it’s just an isolated incident with my phone and Mi Band. But it’s growing to be a rather frustrating dealbreaker for me.

The app and metrics

The Mi Band app opens to a step counter and feed of your recent sleep cycles and walking activity. You can track previous days’ steps, how far you’ve walked, and how many calories you’ve burned. For sleep cycles, the Mi Band monitors how long you slept and for how long you were in a “deep sleep.” The app does little to advise on how the users can improve their daily cycles, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing for those who just want a clear cut readout and not a robot coach.

この問題がすべての製品にずっとついてくる不具合なのか、原文筆者のスマートフォンとMi Bandだけで起こるものなのかは検証することはできない。しかし、この問題のせいでいらいらし、購入の意欲はそがれてきている。

Mi Bandアプリを開くと、歩数計と、ユーザの睡眠サイクルとウォーキング記録のフィードが開く。過去の歩数や歩いた距離、燃焼したカロリーを参照できる。睡眠サイクルについては、何時間眠ったか、合計何時間「深い睡眠」をとれたかをモニターできる。アプリはユーザーがどのように毎日のサイクルを改善すべきかのアドバイスはほとんどしないが、それは、データだけをはっきり知りたい、ロボットにコーチされることを望まないユーザにとって、決して悪いことではない。

Xiaomi Android Button Mi Key Integrates Chinese Taxi App Kuaidi

Mi Key, the Pressy-like programmable physical button for Android devices developed by Xiaomi, has integrated Kuaidi, one of the leading taxi apps in China, that the latter can be opened with one button click.

If there’s no Kuaidi app in your Android phone, the Mi Key’s accompanying app will direct you to an app store to download and install it. Mi Key was launched in April this year as one of the Chinese clones of Pressy — The others include Qihoo 360′s Smart Button and Quick Button.

Those Chinese buttons have similar functions with Pressy’s, such as taking photos, switching on the torch and capturing screenshots. The Xiaomi Mi Key is sold for RMB4.9 (about US$0.8) — cheap enough.

Xiaomi said more integrations with third-party services like Kuaidi will be available later on.

The Qihoo’s button and Quick Button have been merged — It is reported that the former had invested the latter, and Qihoo decided earlier this month to give them away, hoping to have users adopt the company’s software products that have been integrated with the buttons or will be added later on, or channel users to other services of the company.

It's not as good as feature phones, so I would rate it 3, but listening to music is very convenient like iPod. I can't live without it while commuting. I listen to music via Bluetooth, which is really convenient.

Sometimes I see posts that say 3GS has longer battery life, but still I need charging every day. Usually I listen to music for around three hours while commuting (via Bluetooth), web browsing at the same time for around an hour, and a couple of emails.

The battery level goes down to 40% level although it is full in the morning. I wish it lasts at least two days...

**Satisfaction** Five (out of five)
There are minuses, but in general, it's more than satisfactory. But I wonder why it can't connect although antenna pict is level five here and there on Tokaido Shinkansen line. Of course Docomo phones can connect and even PHS can connect unexpectedly. Anyway, there's no problem as long as I can connect :)

I hope it loads Osaifu-Keitai and internal 1seg TV.

Vendors on board for the feature’s initial rollout include Dairy Queen, Guoda Pharmacies, department store chains Tianhong and Minsheng Baihuo, supermarket chains One Plus One and Lotus, convenience store chains Hao Lingju and Guoda 365, and childcare chain Aiyingshi. Tech in Asia has reached out to Tencent for more details on the terms of its partnerships with these outlets.

WeChat’s in-store payments feature resembles that that of Alibaba’s Alipay Wallet, which lets users pay for in-store goods by generating QR codes, bar codes, and sound waves. Alibaba told Tech in Asia that as of January, 30,000 individual brick-and-mortar outlets were accepting in-store payments through the app.

In-store mobile payments is an area hotly contested space by China’s tech giants. While Alibaba’s Alipay Wallet likely generates more gross merchandise volume because of its tie in with Alibaba’s long-standing escrow service, Tencent’s WeChat Payments got a huge boost in registrations thanks to a gifting campaign that went viral over Chinese New Year. Tencent’s recent US$814 million joint venture with Baidu and Wanda Group affirms its commitment to bringing mobile payments to the masses.
