・私は最近、イタリアに商品を送ることをやめました。
理由は、イタリアの税関は商品のチェックが厳しく、通関にとても時間がかかるからです。
到着に時間がかかるとバイヤーからクレームが来ますが、

The privious review is wrong. The expression "should you wish to purchase the item" moderates the directness of the statement. The Japanese writer wants to tell the reader exactly what he/she thinks of. So, the sentence "Please contact another seller." is right on target. I pity you because your translation was misevaluated.

Thank you, dosanko. I did leave out the 買って because I thought it was redundant and obvious. I often get flagged by native Japanese translators for these omissions--and though it keeps me on my toes, it often leaves me wondering about what truly makes a "better quality" translation. Thank you so much for chiming in.

Dear Ms. risingsuntranslations, I think a "bettre quality" translation, when it comes to translaiton from Japanese into Englis, is to be simpler and more umbiguous. Because, Japanese people tend to keep innermost feelings to themselves, so that people in the other countries may be delueded into thiking that the Japanese person interested has conceded, if you used some concessional expression in the translation. In the case this time, if you had written such an ambiguous sentense,the receiver would have presume that there was room for negotiation. In this regard, you are very right. After the receiver read the tranlation, he/she probably feels unable to continue negotiateion. You put yourself in the position of the reader. If you added the expression that previous reviewer proposed, the cliant would loses ground. Although a few translators with higher points extremely underestimae translations of those with lower points, I begin to find that they have more experiences in Conyac community but less knowledge of persuasive written English. The reason why they have a high level points is that there few people who could evaluate their translations. You had better not hesitate to rebut.

Dosanko-san, thank you for taking the time to respond in such detail. I have been translating professionally for a long time, but I am very new to the Conyac community. Your comments were very inspiring and insightful to me. I agree with you that in most cases, clarity and communicative force should take precedence over the exact replication of details of expression in the original, and that translating Japanese to English requires a particular sensitivity to (and willingness to say outright) shades of meaning that are only hinted at in the Japanese. Otherwise we create many cultural misunderstandings like the ones you describe. Thank you again for your encouragement and expertise!
