九州山地の宮崎県境の水源より八代までの全長約１１５km。 人吉盆地を穏やかに貫流した流れが、この区間に入ると一気に川幅が狭まりパワーのあるホワイトウォーター （急流）となることから九州随一のパドリングエリアになっている。
年間を通じて水量が安定し、観光遊船「球磨川下り」が運行されているので、 増水時を除けばヤバイ所もなく安全。

About 11 kilometers' distance.
It is about 115 kilometers from a reservoir at the border of Kyushu mountain district and Miyazaki prefecture to Yatsushiro city. The stream which runs through Hitoyoshi Basin peacefully narrows at once in this district and becomes a powerful whitewater (rapid flowing). This is why it is the best paddling area in Kyushu.
The volume of water is stable all year round and a sightseeing boat, "Kumagawa-kudari" runs there, so there is no dangerous place except when the water is swollen. It is pretty safe.
