In its most basic form, generativity is the human concern for the well-being of future generations in general and one's progeny in particular. Erikson argued that generative efforts are most fully realized at midlife, after individual concerns with identify and intimacy have been negotiated. At midlife, individuals broaden the focus of their gaze to include not only care about their families, but also care about the well-being of all future generations. When formulating hypotheses about generativity, psychologists have drawn heavily from Erikson(1950,1980,1983).
