Vantan Language School

When we were moving to the place of work, not only the students but I as Japanese couldn't say anything, seeing houses, parks and cars damaged by tsumami.

Students of Vantan Language School removed sludge which had come from the deep seabed by tsunami and stuck in the ditch.

Students of different schools and nations worked together in silence in the strong wind and sun, all of whom using Japanese, regardless of schools and nationalities at that time.

While we were moving to the site, we saw many buildings, parks, and cars that had been damaged by TSUNAMI and no word could describe what students and I witnessed there.

The students of Vantan Language School helped to remove the sludge that came from the bottom of the sea and became solid.

All students with diverse school and nationality all together kept working on it under a severe sunshine and windy condition.

While they were working, many of the residents said in a gentle voice and with smile, "You are really working hard," "We really appreciate that so many people came here," and so on. Some people told us about the precious experience of the earthquake, others told us about the present situation. Though we stayed for only a short time, we had a chance to communicate with the people of the local community.

What strikes me is that they said with smile, "We have to be strong, since we can't be in grief all the time."

The reality is that it will take such a long time to reconstruct.

However, we will get our strength back little by little.

When we were working to remove the sludge, people in neighbor kindly talked to us and told us "Good work," "We are so glad that this many people are here and helping us." Although the time we stayed there was limited, we had a chance to directly interact with the local people and know what happened there after the earthquake and what current issues are.

One of the most impressive things is that one person told me "We should not be sad anymore. We need to cheer ourselves up now."

The fact is that it takes long time for the affected region to recover.

However they are recovering little by little.
