Microsoft countered this criticism by inviting software developers from other companies to Redmond for briefings about the future development of its operating system. In reality, however, it is very unlikely that any such Chinese Wall could realistically be expected to work in such a competitive industry. For one thing, it flies in the face of the concept of the learning organization. In the real world the very notion of Chinese Walls is somewhat naive, something recognized by the antitrust settlement, which called for Microsoft to share its application programming interfaces with third-party companies, and open up other intellectual property and technical know-how.
