アアルトと並んで、本国フィンランドでは家具界の巨匠とされている。フィンランドでクラフト＆デザインを学んだ後、イギリスやスウェーデンで勉強を積み、パリでコルビジュエ事務所に6ヵ月間勤務する。またイリノイ工科大学のプロダクトデザイン学科で客員教授を務めるなど国際的に活躍。合理的な構造を得意とし、有機的なフォルムの中にも機能性が織り込まれている。
1951年、妻でデザイナーのアンニッキと共にデザイン事務所をヘルシンキに設立。
