日中学生会議に参加した際に、京都で買った扇子を送った友達がいる。
さて彼と一年越しに日本に来た時に再開した際、こちらが受け取りづらいほど高価な中国の茶具をもらった。その時彼は直接は言わなかったのだが、後日共通の知り合いに聞いたところ、中国人は贈与について、律儀にお返しをしないといけないという考え方が強いらしく、彼は実は昨年僕から高価なお土産を受け取ったことを少し負担に思っていたようだ。この出来事をきっかけに僕は、常識だと思っている行動様式さえ、文化相対視する必要性を再確認した。
When I attended the Japanese-Chinese student meeting, I gave a fan bought from Kyoto to a friend.
Now, when I met him again one year later in Japan, I received a very expensive Chinese tea set which I was uncomfortable about due to the price. At that time, although I did not tell him directly, I later knew from a mutual acquaintance that the Chinese have this mentality of always giving a return gift when they receive one. I think he was probably feeling burdened about the expensive souvenir I gave to him. As a result of this incident, I realized again the importance of re-looking at actions which seem like common sense through different cultural perspectives.
以来外国の人と接する時には敏感に相手の反応に気を配るようになった。
脳は新しい場所や人、コンテンツと多く接している時、五感の受け取った情報の隅々まで、多くのことに気付きやすくなるように思う。日本人のいない環境、異なる言葉、文化圏のアメリカの大地は、まさしく「新しい事柄」の連続であり、常に周囲の環境に目を凝らし、自分の価値観を破壊し、再構築したい。また、日本での教育を受けるうちに大人数でインタラクションのないインプット偏重の日本のスタイルに違和感を感じるようになった。
Since then when I communicate with foreign people I have started to get more sensitive to how those will react to what I say or do.
I think our brain tends to start to be able to notice a lot of things even something very little out of the information our five senses receives when our brain interacts with new places, people and contents. The land of America where there is no Japanese people, where different language is spoken in different cultural backgrounds is definitely a place you will get “new things” all the way so I just would like to destroy my mindsets and rebuild them all over again looking at what’s surrounding me always. Also, I began to wonder if the way we do in our classrooms in Japan where there are bunch of students just sitting being not very interactive and working so hard just to input what we learn is the best way as I go under the education in Japan.
卒業生の話などを聞くうちに、日本のトップ大学に進学しても授業はそのような理念の延長線上にあるだけでなく、クラス毎の人数が増えてより状況が悪くなるようである。少人数教育により様々な出自を持った生徒の声、拾い上げミックスするアメリカの大学の教室はまさに自分の理想の環境である。特に〇大学は自身が関心を持つ社会学、計算機科学などの分野において全米トップクラスの研究型大学として君臨している。
When I listen to the talk of graduates, class in top class Japanese university is not only the extend of such thinking, the situation gets worse as the numbers in class increase. USA university education in small number and listen to student voices from variety of culture, and mix, is exactly my desired environment. Especially 〇 university is known as top class USA research university with my interested field such as sociology, computer science.
また、◯大学がアメリカを目指すことをつい最近志した自分にとって、このような遅い時期までapplyするチャンスを与えてくれたことに深く感謝している。
「路上考現学」に影響を受けた自分は、普段からノートを持ち歩き、街のオブジェクトの形、人々の会話内容、そういったものもすべて考察対象としている。特に、そうした現象の背後にを想像することが好きであり、同じものを見た時に、他の人とは違う知見を引き出すことを一つの主題としている。
In addition, for myself who recently started to aim for entry into ◯ University in America, I am very grateful to be given a chance to apply despite it being so late in the application period.
As I had been affected by the idea of modernology on the road, I walk around with a notebook and observe everything such as the shapes of objects on the streets and what people say. In particular, I like to imagine what lies behind these phenomena. When I see something similar, one key theme for me is to bring up information different from others.
大学では自然科学分野の学問にも幅広くコミットし、高校時代に感覚だけで分析してきた世の中の構造に論理的なバックボーンを与えたい。
自分が成長したければ、まずはより良い環境に入ることが大事だと考え、それが入手できなければ、自分で構築するように心がけている、今まで実行してきた。日中学生会議では会議史上初の高校生として自分の住む国とは違う大文化圏を間近で観察するチャンスを獲得し、生徒会長として哲学対話を導入するなど校内にも風穴を開けた。
In university, I want to commit to the field of natural science widely, and give logical backbone to the structure of society analyzed only by the feeling in high school days.
If I want to grow, it is important to be in good environment first. If it is impossible, I try to make it by myself, and have been carrying it out so far. In Sino-Japanese student conference, I obtained a chance to observe a great cultural zone that is different from the country I live in as the first high school student in the conference.
I also started carrying out a new idea in school such as introducing philosophical conversation as president of student council.
