Sukiyaki is usually prepared by cooking beef, onion, tofu and other ingredients in sweeter soy sauce based soup. Ingredients may be regionally different, but flavor and contents are very similar making it one of soul food for many Japanese.

Curiously, "SUKIYAKI" a song by Japanese singer, Kyu Sakamoto which hit the Billboard Chart No 1 in 1963 had nothing do with this dish. This song title was used because then it was the most well-known Japanese word among Americans. The Japanese title "Ue wo muite arukou" translates to "Keep your head-up" in English.
