日本では大晦日には家で年越しそばを食べながら紅白歌合戦を見るか、各地で行われているカウントダウンイベントに行くのが一般的です。花火などがあるイベントも多いです。

また、新年初めての日の出を見ることは「初日の出」と呼ばれており、日本ではめでたいとされているため、多くの人がそれを見るために各スポットにでかけます。
