最初の方で書いたように、これは私に取っては個人的な事情で興味と関心を惹かれる問題だ。私は二人目の子供を授かった時、３ヶ月間休職した。

私に取って運が良かったのは、ちょうどその前の年にカリフォルニア州が全米で初めて育児休暇手当制度（今でもこの制度がある州は２つしかないと思う）を導入していたことだった。これは６週間の休職に対し、一定の上限額まで、収入の55％を支給するという制度である。ただし、課税がされないので実収入との差は思うほど大きくない。
