Not "asking a favor" but "making clear what I can do" must be important when you are collecting information as well as looking for a job in a new place.
Also, you may be able to collect more information after all if you share what you can do with others on a daily basis rather than just wandering around to collect information. And, you better do something good for many people than trying hard to get something for yourself. This theory could be always significant in any age, and be the key to survive in this age of information eventually.
