My parents' house was also in Tokyo, however all of my family members were not good at communication, we seldome get in touch with each other.
If I were much younger I would have consulted to them. But I started living with my partner and got married at around my 40s, I just settle the issue as an ex post facto report.
In our world, there could be events that none of us can imagine.

My parents lived in Tokyo too, but because of our family's natural inability to keep in touch, we rarely contacted each other.
If we had been younger, we would have talked to each other about it, but as we lived together and got married when we were nearly forty, we just reported it after the fact.
