For the first time, the diversity of social,
economic, and educational outcomes was recognized, and
we began to see that outcomes for adolescent mothers may
not vary tremendously from outcomes for women of similar
economic backgrounds. The comparisons with the national
sample data did not “control” perfectly for poverty and did
not control for many other factors at all. Additional work is
needed to determine the “true” costs of adolescent childbearing.
