山路を登りながら、こう考えた。
智に働けば角が立つ。情に棹させば流される。意地を通せば窮屈だ。とかくに人の世は住みにくい。

Going up a mountain track, I fell to thinking.
Approach everything rationally, and you become harsh. Pole along in the stream of emotions, and you will be swept away by the current. Give free rein to your desires, and you become uncomfortably confined. It is not a very agreeable place to live, this world of ours.

I thought this when I was walking on a mountain (path).
Acting by intellect cause conflict. （智恵で行動すれば摩擦を生む）
Being move by feeling make you run along with it. （情に動かされれば、自分も一緒に流される）
Forcing a will can be rigid. （意地を押し出すことは窮屈になり得る）
[After all/Either way], the (human) world is [a hard place to live/hard to live in].
これは意外に難しいですね・・・。ちょっと自信がないですが、ここらが限界。
"After all" と "Either way"ですが、前者は「（前のことを抜きにしても）最終的には」という意味、
後者は「（前のことのうち）いずれにせよ」という意味。
個人的には前者の方が諦め気味な雰囲気で好きですが。
"a hard place to live" と "hard to live in"は、前者を使うと「（人の世は）住みにくい場所」、
後者は「（人の世は）住むには難しい」という意味になります。
後者の方が直訳に近いですが、個人的には前者の方がニュアンス的に近いと思います。
（）にある単語はオプショナルで。なくても通じます。
