For example, 90% of household energy consumed in England is derived from coals, and fuelwood usage decreased to 14.8% in the United States during 1940. Also Japan’s per-house fuel consumption is only 40% of England, and 20% of the United States. However, as the total consumption level of Japan at that time was 20% of England and 17% of the United States, one can argue that Japan had a relatively high consumption level regarding energies.

When comparing the energy usage of a Japanese household before the war with that of other countries, you can see that internationally seen Japan was very dependent on its forests. To make a comparison, a British household would get 90% of their energy from coal, and the usage of wood and charcoal fuel dropped to 14.8% in America in the 1940s. The fuel consumption of a single household in Japan only makes up about 40% of the consumption of a British household, and 20% of one in America. However, the standard consumption level in Japan was about 20% of the British, and 17% of the American standard consumption, so you could say that energy consumption in Japan was relatively high.

If you compare energy usage of general houses in pre-war period of Japan with other countries, you can see that dependence on wood fuel was high in Japan internationally. For example, charcoals consisted 90% of energy usage at houses in UK, and in US the ratio of wood fuel dropped to 14.8% by 1940. If you look at energy consumption per family, Japan is only about 40% of UK, and 20% of US. However, consumption level of overall household budget in Japan was about 20% of UK, and 17% of US, so it can be said that the amount of energy-related consumption was relatively high.
