戦前日本の家庭用エネルギーを他国の状況と比較してみると、日本では森林への依存度が国際的に高かったことがわかる。例えばイギリスの家庭においては９０％のエネルギーが石炭系であり、アメリカでの薪炭利用の割合は１９４０年には14.8％まで低下している。１世帯当たり燃料消費量についても日本はイギリスのおよそ４０％、アメリカの２０％に過ぎない。ただし家計の総合的消費水準が日本ではイギリスの約２０％、アメリカの１７％程度であったので、エネルギーに関しては相対的に消費が多かったとも言える。

If you compare energy usage of general houses in pre-war period of Japan with other countries, you can see that dependence on wood fuel was high in Japan internationally. For example, charcoals consisted 90% of energy usage at houses in UK, and in US the ratio of wood fuel dropped to 14.8% by 1940. If you look at energy consumption per family, Japan is only about 40% of UK, and 20% of US. However, consumption level of overall household budget in Japan was about 20% of UK, and 17% of US, so it can be said that the amount of energy-related consumption was relatively high.
