曲面や曲線の弾性エネルギやひずみエネルギは自然界に存在する形状において最小化され，これを美しいとする考え方がある．エネルギ最小化による曲面生成に関して，穂坂らはこの平滑化を自動で行うために曲率の2乗の積分値を曲線の評価関数とした．また穂坂らはこれを実用的なモデルに拡張した．曲面エネルギ最小化に関してはBloorらによっても考察がおこなわれている．また，三角メッシュ曲面の最適形状を考えるにあたり，対話的に曲面編集ができるよう検討したのがBrakkeらである．

Inoue and others extended this and realized the curved surface optimization by the strain energy concerning the curved surface which can be created combining the parametric curves.
