How WeChat Can Slash Marketing Costs In China: Chinaccelerator Demo Day

Even the most careful startups can drain their funding on marketing in a tough ecosystem like China. But according to local incubator Chinaccelerator, using WeChat the right way can be the key to slashing costs.

“We focus on Wechat as a platform for low-cost customer acquisition,” says William Bao Bean, the managing director of Chinaccelerator and partner at SOSV (Previously known as SOS Ventures).

Chinaccelerator presented the twelve startups in their most recent batch this week for judging after a 90-day intensive program, where Mr. Bean pointed out that Wechat was now a core marketing tool for the young companies.

Compared to Yelp, where users have to go through the stranger’s review to find out quality restaurants, Bestaurant curates the best restaurants by a user’s trusted friends. Bestaurant is a mobile app that lists the best restaurants for people who want to know where to eat in real time. In a beta version released this November, it had seen 11% of users invite five friends or more. The company partnered with Uber Eats, which gives out credits for Bestaurant users. The company monetizes through deals for loyal fans, enterprise accounts, and partnership fees. Founder of Bestaurant, Dominic Penaloza, founded three consumer social startups, including Ushi and WorldFriends.

One of the startups adds value to the Airbnb model by offering upsells such as laundry and car rentals to guests

Joyful Frog Digital Incubator (JFDI) Co-founder and Chairman Wong Meng Weng, in an interview with e27, once said that startups who go through its accelerator programme had to have the ‘secret’.

Yesterday, eight startups from the JFDI 2015B batch concluded the 100-day accelerator programme by pitching to over 100 potential investors at a demo day.

1. Roomfilla

The UK- and Thailand-based startup operates as a third-party property manager, helping property investors get higher returns on their property through short-term rentals on up to 15 sites like Airbnb, Wimdu and Travelmob.

It also offers a concierge service where guests can obtain high-margin premium services such as a minibar, laundry, car rental and tour packages. According to Founder and CEO, Stuart Lansdale, the company is already on course to break even this month.

InfoGym connects gyms, trainers, and end-users, redefining the gym relationship as a network platform.

For the user, InfoGym collects data from wearable electronics and personal trainer sessions, acting as a personal fitness diary.

For the gym, InfoGym collects information about user activity at the gym, with analytics providing gyms real-time insight into customer engagement. As a result, client gyms in Europe — the company has its roots in Norway and is led by CEO Tor Ivar Våge — have reduced their drop-out rate by 30 per cent, according to the company.

Play2Lead is a gamified mobile and web application that helps companies deliver excellent service by making training fun, memorable, and measurable.

Founded by Theresa Lim, who has 20 years of experience in B2B marketing, product development and market research, their application helps corporation trainers run activities including quizzes, polls, and activities so that employees across the organization can engage and learn, then reflect, and move them closer towards the desired behaviour change.

4. Play2Lead

Fynd takes the hassle out of finding a phone repair technician. Its software platform finds the best technician and sends him or her to your home or office to perform an on-site repair. The technicians are independent third-party contractors.

Currently operational in Singapore and Hong Kong, it has repaired more than 2,900 mobile phones and is now handling 660 phones per month.

7. Fynd

Can you really become happy by going professional in something the field of which you don't like very much? An American career analyst, Daniel Pink said like this. People need "autonomy, mastery, and purpose" to give a good performance at work. I agree with that. You should get a job which you can put your heart into. I often hear something like you shouldn't turn your hobby into a job, but it is an excuse by those who did not so. By turning what you like into a job, it leads to happiness of you and your customer.

The number of stay-at-home dads has inched up in recent years, but so has the number of stay-at-home moms (moms who don’t work outside the home) — from 23 percent of all mothers in 1999 to 29 percent in 2012.

By comparison, in a 2013 paper, researchers at the University of Minnesota found that the percentage of U.S. households with a stay-at-home dad had climbed from an average of 1.2 percent in the 10 years ending in 1979 to 3.4 percent in the 10 years ending in 2009.
