Gaopeng Execs Blame Tencent For Downsizing, Facing Cash CrunchAccording to people familiar with the matter, Gaopeng, the joint-force of Groupon and Tencent in China, has fired one thirds of its Chinese staff (including both execs and rank and file employees) while shutting down nearly 50% to 80% of its China branch offices. Gaopeng former and present General Manager pointed out that the significant downsize was resulted from Tencent’s delay in funding the joint-venture.Actually, Gaopeng was seeing tough cash problem just couple months of its debut in China due to rapid expansion and management infighting, managers at the company disclosed.

Tokopedia Puts Up Impressive Numbers In Its Second YearTokopedia recently celebrated its second anniversary. Lucky for us, its co-founder William Tanuwijaya is willing to share some interesting facts about the company during its second year.Despite the newness of Tokopedia it has made some remarkable achievements. Not only has it become a trendsetter in Indonesia’s e-commerce landscape, but it has put up some fascinating numbers for a company of its size. For example, total transactions recorded during the second year were Rp36.031 billion (US$4.2 million). That’s up significantly from last year’s Rp5.954 billion (or about US$697,000).
In other words, the total value of transactions for its second year is about Rp30 billion (US$3.5 million) – that’s an increase of six-fold compared to the first year.According to William, Tokopedia’s success cannot be separated from the loyalty of its users. Even though the userbase is still small, they keep coming back to shop in its online marketplace. As of August 17th, there are 100,857 active users and 11,426 active sellers on Tokopedia. Both figures more than doubled compared to last year.William also found some interesting problems unique to e-commerce in Indonesia, but he couldn’t elaborate since the company is currently working on new features to address them.
In just two years time, Tokopedia has made some significant changes in Indonesia’s e-commerce scene. Its online marketplace concept was then followed by some similar companies like Plasa, Rakuten (the ecommerce service from Japan), and Blibli. But the company still has a long way to go to become a giant in the industry. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of solutions William and his team have to solve the issues they have encountered. But for now, if you’d like to read more on William and Tokopedia, check out our previous interview with him earlier this year.
INFOGRAPHIC: Social Media in IndiaThe Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. We’ve seen rise of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter globally. India is one of the most prominent countries on social networks, despite the fact that only 8.5 percent of the population has access to the Internet.Facebook has 31 million Indian users making it the third largest country on Facebook after the USA and Indonesia. It has around 13 million Indian users on Twitter. For more great information on how Facebook and Twitter are doing in India, check out this brilliant infographic from Techonzo below.
China Has 150 Start-up Incubators Just for Returning Study-Abroad StudentsAccording to the China Daily, China now has over 150 startup incubators specifically aimed at funding startups in China launched by Chinese students who have studied abroad. Why specifically students who have studied abroad? It turns out that most of China’s most successful tech firms — the ones that are listed on the US markets — were started by Chinese students with overseas education. From the China Daily article:
"The statement said that about 80 percent of Nasdaq-listed Chinese high-tech enterprises were started by students who have returned to China after studying abroad. Moreover, about 72 percent of the project leaders of the country’s national key research projects and over half of the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the country’s two leading scientific and technological research institutes, have international education backgrounds."
There may be another reason, though. A recent study on the overseas Chinese experience by Huaqiao University revealed that less than one third of China’s overseas students have returned home since students from China began studying abroad in 1978. China’s blazing hot economy has increased its pull in recent years — that study covered from 1978 to 2009 — but numbers are still relatively low, and given that everyone from China’s wealthy to China’s corrupt officials seems to be moving out of China, it makes sense for the country to offer some incentives for students to come back and found tech companies that can bring China profit and prestige.
The outward flow of China’s wealthy may be cause for concern for China, as is the low rate of return for overseas students who study in developed countries, but these the existence of these incubators is certainly good news to any study-abroad students who have good ideas for tech businesses. If you’re a Chinese student studying overseas right now, know this: China looks forward to welcoming you home, and if you’ve got an idea for a cool new company, there just might be a big bucket of money in it for you too!
Renren, of course, is China’s largest social networking platform, with over 120 million users. MSN is perhaps best known here for their instant messaging service, MSN Messenger. Given that, this partnership could be grim news for Tencent QQ, which enjoys a lead in the Chinese instant messaging market but has recently seen a downturn in user activity and is already facing some new and powerful-looking competitors in the IM market. Integrating MSN seamlessly into Renren’s giant user base might give users yet another reason not to bother opening a separate program like QQ.
In the last couple of months, we have seen Renren partnering with different corporations to make its social networking service even more exciting for Chinese users. These partnerships include:・Weddings – a social wedding platform with Recruit of Japan・Gaming – Integrating Popcap’s Plants vs. Zombies for Renren’s social gamers・Credit – A “social” credit card, in partnership with China Merchants Bank
No carrier in Japan wants to be the first to eliminate the flat rate data plan. Doing so translate to a rate hike for many users. Whichever carrier suspends its unlimited data plan first will be vulnerable to losing customers. This is even more true today as carriers have begun unlocking phones, an act which allows smartphone users to take their phones to another carrier. Instead of doing away with the flat rate plan Japan’s carriers are taking a different approach.
In addition to slowing subscribers that exceed data caps, carriers are being proactive in unloading smartphone users elsewhere. Instead of burdening cellular networks, the carriers are expanding Wi-Fi hotspots. KDDI aims to have 100,000 spots up and running by April 2012. LTE services are also being fast-tracked to handle the overload. NTT Docomo is adjusting its budget to allocate more money towards the expansion of its Xi network. Docomo also has four smartphones in the pipeline that can make use of this network.
Gaopeng Cuts More than 400 Jobs in ChinaChina is like a jungle when doing business. It is filled with hundreds if not thousands of fierce competitors, fighting in an unpredictable and shady environment where rules elsewhere simply don’t apply. Before Gaopeng (Groupon China) even came to China, experienced market observers wrote them off and tossed them into the ‘savagely beaten foreign company’ bucket, with the likes of Google, Yahoo and Ebay. Beijing Morning Post, reported that last week Gaopeng has just culled 400 employees around China; is Gaopeng the next victim?
12 Pitches from Start-up Weekend Tokyo at MixiYou may remember last May when we covered Start-up Weekend Tokyo, and the many great ideas that sprung forth from the three-day event. This weekend saw 2011’s second Start-up Weekend in Tokyo, this time at Mixi HQ in Shibuya.QLive, the winner of the previous SWT event, was put to good use as a way to gather and vote up the best questions in real-time to ask those pitching. And there were indeed some great ideas put together over these three days. I dropped by on the final day to catch the final pitches. Here are the groups that presented, as well as the select few that won awards
Consumers in Southeast Asia Are More Influenced By Social Media AdsAs social media turns into the Internet’s new playground, brands and products are flocking there en masse in an effort to catch customers. And according to Nielsen’s latest study, consumers in the Southeast Asia region are highly influenced by such online advertisements, especially when ads are displayed on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The study reveals 73 percent are ‘highly’ or ‘somewhat’ influenced by ads in social media. The rate jumps to 80 percent if social context is factored in, showing who has liked or followed the advertised brand. (See chart below)
Targeting amateur designers on platforms like Pixiv or DeviantArt, Plastee would serve as a way to aggregate and rank what users deem as the best designs to go on a shirt — and when a certain design reaches the right threshold of votes, then it would be printed. The service would allow for login from other social services, encouraging users to share their designs among friends.
Jamap Jamap uses a sort of flash marketing concept that helps restaurants to call potential customers during slack hours. This service is very similar to that of 2kenme.In hierarchical Japanese work culture, when office workers are drinking with their bosses and colleagues, it’s often the youngest guy among them that has to find a second diner after the first one. Of course on such short notice, there is no reservation and no planning. To remedy this sort of problem, Jamap helps communicate the location of a nearby restaurant along with the number of seats available.Website: jamap
