Remember in science class where we were introduced to the Periodic Table of Elements listing substances and telling their weight and characteristics? I have often wondered whether we could have a Periodic Table of Kindness, with different projects attitudes and goals we could nurture to make this world a better place. So I was astonished when I saw this actualized at TED Women by the filmmaker Tiffany Shlain. She presented on a film project "The Science of Character" and event—Character Day, February 5, 2014—with the same purpose in developing more positive human characteristics in our school children. I asked her for permission to reprint it here at Rogerebert.com.

اتذكر عندما درسنا الجدول الدوري للعناصر في حصة العلوم متضمنا المواد و الذي يخبرنا بوزنها الذري و خواصها ؟
لقد كنت اتسائل غالبا عما اذا كان اننا ان حظينا بجدول دوري للطيبه لمختلف مواقف و اهداف المشاريع , نستطيع ان ننشيء عالما افضل .

Ireland is still vulnerable to any downturn in Britain or Europe because most of its trade is conducted with them. Some economists at the Central Bank of Ireland privately worry that the few signs of recovery in the Irish economy at the moment are due to spillover effects from Britain's recovery rather than due to much improvement in Ireland's own economic fortunes. Other headwinds from its neighbours will also hit in the years to come. British efforts to make Northern Ireland more competitive, for instance, will, rather unhelpfully, put a lower cost competitor on its doorstep and may attract foreign investment away from the rest of Ireland.

لا تزال ايرلندا معرضه للخطر مع اي اهتزاز في بريطانيا او اوروبا لان معظم تجارتها تتم معهم. و يخشي بعض الاقتصاديين في البنك المركزي الايرلندي بشكل غير علني ان العلامات القليله للتعافي في الاقتصاد الايرلندي هي انعكاس لتعافي الاقتصاد البريطاني لا نتيجه لتحسن كبير في الحظوظ للاقتصاد الايرلندي ذات نفسه . و ستضرب ايضا الرياح المعاكسه قادمه من جيرانها في السنوات القادمه . ان الجهود البريطانيه لجعل شمال ايرلندا اكثر تنافسيه كمثال ستضع للاسف منافس ذو تكلفه اقل عند ابوابها و ربما تجذب الاستثمارات الاجنبيه بعيدا عن باقي ايرلندا

And anything that could cause a stampede of multinational companies out of Ireland, which currently generate 20% of Ireland's GDP, would wreak havoc. In short, a big external shock to the economy could easily send its towering pile of debt crashing down on top of it.

So far, Ireland has tried to deal with its debt problems through austerity. In the eyes of the International Monetary Fund, it has become the poster child of Europe by meeting most of the targets set for it in its bail-out agreement. However, this has done little to solve Ireland's underlying ailment: the fact that domestic activity—roughly equivalent to GNP—only accounts for 80% of GDP.

و اي شيئ قد يحدث تدافع للشركات العالميه خارجه من ايرلنداوالتي تولد حاليا 20 % من الدخل العام الايرلندي. سيعيث الفساد و باختصار فان اية ضربه خارجيه قوية للاقتصاد تستطيع و بسهوله تحطيم كوم الدين الشاهق فوقه.
حتي الان فان ايرلنداولت التعاملمع دينها عبر التقشف . و في عيون صندوق النقد الدولي فانها اصبحت طفل اوروبا المدلل عن طريق الالتزاام بمعظم الاهداف المحددة في اتفاقيه الانقاذ. و لكن هذا فعل القليل لحل مشكله ايرلندا الاساسيه و هي حقيقه ان النشاط الداخلي المماثل بشكل تقريبي للناتج المحلي الاجمالي يمثل 80% فقط من الناتج القومي الاجمالي.

Alone Abroad:
Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey Into Bhutan, Jamie Zeppa, 2000.
Jamie Zeppa spent three years in the country of Bhutan as a volunteer teacher of English. As one of the few foreigners in the country she learns how to live among the people without any previous knowledge of the country and its culture. This is a rare view of a country that holds its isolation paramount, letting in few outsiders.

Finally I will leave you with one of my favorite authors, Isabel Allende. Women traveling on their own, has become one of her more recent themes. Ines of My Soul and Daughter of Fortune both tell the story of women traveling alone in times when it was not common.

قضت جيمي زيبا ثلاثه اعوام في دوله بوتان كمدرس متلطوع للانجليزيه. كواحد من الاجانب القلائل في الدوله تعلمت كيف تعيش وسط الناس بدون معرفه سابقه بالدوله و ثقافتها. هذه رؤيه نادره للدوله التي تقدر عزلتها بشده و تسمح بدخول اجانب قلائل.
و اخيرا اترككم مع واحد من مؤلفي المفضلين,ايزابيل الليندا. ان النساء اللاتي يسافرن علي عهدتهن, اصبح واحد من التيمات الحديثه
ان لمحات من روحي و ابنه الثروه كلاهما يروي حكايه نساء يسافرنم بمفردهنفي وقت لم يكن هذا شائعا

Ines of My Soul focuses on a woman who leaves Spain for the New World and her role as a conquistadora, through Peru and Chile.
Her earlier book Daughter of Fortune tells the story of Eliza, an English woman from Chile who heads to the United States during the time of the railway expansion, following her love, and father to her soon to be born child. This is her tale of learning a new place alone, and the world she creates for herself there.

Here I have only mentioned the books that are closest to my heart, but when it comes to travel, there are so many more out there for you to explore and enjoy. I hope that you can find time to sit down for a while with your own book.

ان ملامح من قلبي يركز علي امراة تركت اسبانيا للعالم الجديد و دورها كفاتحه عبر بيروو شيلي.
اما كتا,بها السابق ابنه الحظ فيخبرنا يقصه اليزا, و هي امراه انجليزيه من شيلي و التي تتوجه الي الولايات المتحده خلال فتره توسع السكك الحديديه
متابعه حبها و والد طفلها الذي سيولد قريبا. هذه قصه تعاملها مع مكان جديد وحدها و العالم التي تخلقه لنفسها هناك.
و انا هنا ذكرت فقط الكتب القريبه من قلبي لكن عندما ياتي ذكر السفر هناك الكثير منها لكي تكتشف و تستمتع به. اتمني ان تجد الوقت لكي تجلس معغ كتابك لفتره كافيه

I don't know if I am drawn to them exclusively. There are lots of stuff that I have been trying to get made. The next one of mine has a lot of heart in it, but isn't inspirational. "The Blind Side" took forever to get it out of 20th Century Fox in turnaround. It was one of three different movies I was involved with then. "The Blind Side" just happened to be the one that got made. I don't know. It is kind of interesting how some people think, "It moved me, so then I must be manipulated." Every director knows it is his job to be manipulative. When you make an edit, you are trying to manipulate. When you use a certain song. We live in a very cynical world. I was moved, therefore it's bad. Life is not that simple.

لا اعرف اذا كنت مرتبطا بهم حصريا. هناك الكثير من الامور التي لا زلت احاول ان يتم صنعها. يوجد الكثير من المشاعر في عملي القادم لكنه ليس ملهما .
ان الجانب الاعمي اخذ الكثير من الوقت لكي تخرجه فوكس القرن العشرين في مواجهه. لقد كن واحدا من ثلاثه افلام مختلفه كنت مرتبطا بهم حينئذ . لقد كان الجانب الاعمي هو الفيلم الذي تصادف و تم صنعه . لا ادكتري . ان كيفيه تفكير بعض الناس لامر مثير للاهتمام, لقد حركني, لذلك فلابد انني قد تم التلاعب بي . و يعرف كل مخرج ان وظيفته ان يكون مؤثرا . فعندما تقوم بالتعديل فانت تتحاول ان تكون مؤثرا . عندما تستخدم اغنيه معينه نحن نعيش في عالم شديد التهكم. لقد تحركت مشاعري , لذلك هذا سيئ فان الحياه ليست بهذه البساطه

You wouldn't know why she was being so vigilant about her work without knowing her past. It would be a one-note, fun movie without the other part and not nearly as interesting. It is good to know that the sadness in "Mary Poppins" came from that little girl and her broken family. At that age, she wanted someone to come in and fix it. Aunt Ellie couldn't do that. As a creative person, you turn around and invent Mary Poppins, who could do that. She knew if Disney made the movie all this would be dredged up again for her.

ربما لن تعرف ابدا لماذا كانت شديده التيقظ لعملها بدون معرفه ماضيها.
ربما كان فيلما لطيفا ذو نغمه واحده من غير الجزء الاخرو غير مماثل له في اثاره الاهتمام.
و من الجيد معرفه ان الشجن في ماري بوبنز اتي من الفتاه الصغيره و عائلتها المفككه . في هذا العمر,ارادت ان ياتي شخص ما و يصلح الامور.
فلن تقوم العمه ايليا بعمل هذا. كشخص مبدع ستعالج الامر و تبتكر ماري بوبنز, التي قامت هي بذلك. انها تعرف انه ان قامت ديزني بعمل الفيلم فسيرتد كل هذا اليها.

At the entrance of Rjukan’s Tinn Museum, troll faces (queer-looking giants and dwarves from the Norwegian woods) greet the visitor, and old farm houses and barns show the history of house building from medieval times to the end of the 19th century. Textiles, old prints, paintings and wood carvings represent the art and traditions of the farmers who once settled in this valley before bold scientists and entrepreneurs discovered the place and started to produce energy from the power of its waters.

و عند مدخل متحف روكان للحفظ بالقصدير وجوه لجبابرة (عمالقه باشكال غريبه و اقزام من الغابات النرويجيه ) تحيي الزائر و منازل و اجران المزارع القديمه تظهر تاريخ بناء المنازل من القرون الوسطي حتي اواخر القرن التاسع عشر.
تمثل المنسوجات و المطبوعاتا القديمه و الرسومات و منحوتات الخشب فن و تقاليد المزارعين الذين استقروا في هذا الوادي قبل ان يكتشف العلماء ذوي الجراءة و رجال الاعمال المكان و بدؤا في انتاج الطاقه من قوة مياهها

A winding road brings you up to the mountains in the south, and a narrow fjellveien (mountain road) leads up to 4,134 feet and over one of the highest passes of Norway. Via the places of Tuddal and Sauland, it isn’t far to Heddal, where you can visit the biggest and best preserved stave church of Norway. Built without any nails and steel parts, the wooden building is an architectural masterpiece of the early Middle Ages. Still being the parish church of Heddal, its doors are open to tourists during the summer season.

يقود طريق متعرج عاليا حتي الجبال في الجنوب ثم يقود طريق جبلي ضيق حتي 4134 قدم و فوق واحد من اعلي الدروب في النرويج .
عبر اماكن مثل تودال و سولاند و غير بعيد عن هيدال حيث يمكنك زيارة اكبر واحسن كنائس الستاف حفظا في النرويج. لقد بنيت من غير ايه مسامير او اجزاء حديديه , ان المبني الخشبي يعتبر تحفه معماريه من اوائل القرون الوسطي . و حيث انه لا زال الكنيسه الاساسيه لهيدال فان ابوابه مفتوحه للسائحين في الموسم الصيفي.

ان امراة وحيده وسط سيدات من يجلس يقف ومفعم بطبقات خرقاء من لون القهوه و اللاتي يقران الكتب ذات الغلاف الورقي اللاتي لا يفتهن مواعيد عروضهن االتليفزيونيه و اللاتي ياكلن من المعلبات بالاضافه الي ممراتهن الناعمه واللاتي لم يتمتعن حسيا لعقود حتي لو حاولن.
اللاتي يقمن في شقق ضيقه ساخنه زياده عن الواجب و التي تبدو في لون البول مكدسه بالاطباق االمتسخه و دخان السجائر والاثاث الفئراني و طبعا شعر القطه

هذه هي الاشيياء التي تظل تقذف في طريقي لانني بلغت سنا معيناو ظللت غير متزوج و بغير اطفال و محليا امن وحيدا لمرافقه قطه- و خاصه الان حيث يستطيع اي كان ان يتزوج و ينجبن الاطفال .

Yuanxiao Festival or the Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, fourteen days after Chinese New Year's Day (around the end of January and the beginning of February). In the country and town, people celebrate it heartily. For some reason, there is often a bigger celebration in the rural areas, especially in the North.

ان احتفال يوانزياو او احتفال المصابيح هو عيد صيني تقليدي في اليوم الخامس عشر بعد اليوم الاول من العام الصيني الجديد (حوالي اوخر يتاير و اوائل فبراير) . يحتفل الناس به بشغف في الريف و المدن . لسبب ما غالبا ما يكون الاحتفال به اكبر في المناطق الريفيه خصوصا في الشمال.

The most popular food for this festival is yuanxiao, a kind of sweet dumpling made of glutinous rice or wheat flour. Apart from yuanxiao, the customary foods vary from place to place. In Shaanxi Province, people take yuanxiao tea, a sort of soup made of boiled flour mixed with vegetables and fruits; in Luoyang and Lingbao, Henan Province, people favor jujube paste; in Kunming, Yunnan Province, people prefer bean dough. Other folk customs of the Lantern Festival include attending the lantern fair, guessing riddles and performing traditional festivities.

ان الطعام الاكثر شعبيه في هذا الاحتفال هو اليوانزياو وهو نوع من الزلابيه الحلوه مصنوع من الارز المحتوي علي الجيلوتين او دقيق القمح. وبغض النظر عن اليوانزياو فان الاطعمه المعتاده تختلف من مكان لاخر. ففي مقاطعه شانكسي يتناول الناس شاي اليوانزياو و هو نوع من الشوربه مصتوع من دقيق مغلي مختلطا بالخضروات و الفاكهه. ففي ليوانجو و لينجباو بمقاطعه هينان يفضل الناس معجنات جوجوبي. في كونمينج بمقاطعه يونان يفضل الناس عجين البقوليات . اما التقاليد الفولكلوريه الاخري لاحتفال اليوانزياو فتشمل حضور عرض المصابيح و تخمين الاحاجي و اداء الاحتفاليات التقليديه

But while he might look like a scruffier version of Chandler from "Friends," there is more than a smidge of Travis Bickle seeping into his psyche.
