Who’s winning mobile search?

While that looks worrying for Baidu, the company can gain some comfort from the fact that it has the best smartphone strategy and mobile app ecosystem of any of its local rivals. Certainly way ahead of Qihoo, whose mobile search engine is about five years behind the curve.

As shown in the image below, Qihoo’s search engine (so.com) gives you a bunch of links when you search “Starbucks” on your phone, whereas Baidu actually makes itself useful (if you scroll down the first page a bit) by showing you the nearest Starbucks branches along with a handy button for you to call the store. When I search for something on my phone, it’s usually because I need local information, but Qihoo still has none of that.

2014 will be a year of intensifying rivalry between Baidu and Qihoo – not just for search engine users, but for web users and app downloads across numerous areas, such as anti-virus apps, web browsers, Android app store users, and music streaming. And those are just the current clash points between the two firms. More will emerge in the new year.

Singapore Red Cross gamifies blood donations with new app

Blood donation shortages have been a problem everywhere for years. To raise awareness, typical methods include driving blood donation trucks around the city, pop-up donation stations at offices, sharing emergency notices via social media, and more.

But this is 2014, which means there has to be more innovative ways to drive blood donation awareness. Red Cross Connection, a mobile app by the Singapore Red Cross was created to do just that.

しかし今は2014年、献血を呼びかけるのにこれまでにない革新的な方法が現れた。シンガポール赤十字によるRed Cross Connectionという携帯アプリが作られたのだ。

Quietly rolled out near the end of last year, Red Cross Connection crowdsources help from its users to drive blood donations in times of need. This is similar to the Indian Blood Donors app. Once installed, users create their profile and indicate their blood type. When blood supplies run low, users would receive Blood Alerts through the app – indicating the specific blood type needed, with a map function to find the nearest Red Cross center for them to make a donation.

Even if users cannot donate the blood themselves, they can still help by sharing the alert with their Facebook friends.

昨年末に静かに始まったこのRed Cross Connectionのクラウドソースは、ユーザの助けを借りて必要な時に献血を促す。これはインドのBlood Donorsアプリに似たアプリだ。インストールされるとユーザはプロフィールを作成し、血液型を登録する。献血量が少なくなると、ユーザは血液アラート(Blood Alert)をアプリから受け取る。その時、不足している血液型情報が、献血をする最寄りの赤十字センターの地図と共に知らされる。

In addition, the app also tracks the number of lives each user has helped save through blood donation, as well as the number of times users shared alerts with their friends. Red Cross Connection also has merchant and partner tie-ups. This means active members may be rewarded with special offers and discounts in their app inbox.

The Singapore Red Cross app might get adapted to other countries if it proves successful in Singapore.

The Red Cross Connectionアプリは iOS版、Android版で利用できる。

The initiative will only take place on weekends. It will require donors to pledge five toys or English children’s books suitable for ages 8 to 14. Donors can participate using the MyTeksi app by making a booking from their location to the MyTeksi headquarters (MYTEKSI HQ). Taxis will then ferry the donations to the headquarters, and its fare will be borne by MyTeksi upon the driver’s arrival. All donations will be handed over to SOLS 24/7 for distribution.

Cheryl Goh, Regional Marketing Head, MyTeksi said that the aim is to collect enough toys and books from the general public to fill up 20 toy libraries in rural areas such as Minusuh (Sabah), Kulim (Kedah) and Sungai Suloh (Johor Bahru). She added, “By leveraging on our large network of taxis, donating is now really convenient as our taxis will help collect the donations from the donor’s home over four weekends.”

Ferry Tenka, Co-founder and CEO, Bilna said, “We are thrilled to have the additional support of world-class investors such as DGI, TMS and Golden Gate Ventures in our quest to be Indonesia’s most customer-centric e-commerce.”

However, the management was said to have set out “aggressive targets” for the year ahead. In 2014, Bilna will be launching more co-promotions with principals, banks, media companies and telecom companies. Himawan said, “What we saw in 2013 was only the tip of the iceberg.”

What I am trying to say is that as an older entrepreneur, with some life experience under my belt, I and others like me, are just as able to handle the startup life. In fact, we have some abilities that younger founders haven’t learned yet. According to an article, ‘Do Older Or Younger Entrepreneurs Have The Greater Advantage?‘ in the Forbes, one study of 5,000 startups in the US: 48 per cent of the startups had a founder 45 years old or older. However four years later, out of the surviving companies, 64 per cent had a founder 45 years old or older. Meaning the survival rate of startups with older founders is higher. Surprised? I wasn’t.

今私が言おうとしていることは、年配のアントレプレナー、それも身に着いた人生経験をいくらか持つ者として、私や私のような者はスタートアップ人生に対処できるということだ。実際、私たちには、若手の設立者がまだ学んでいない能力がいくらかある。Forbes誌の「Do Older Or Younger Entrepreneurs Have The Greater Advantage?」という記事によれば、米国の5,000のスタートアップを対象とした調査で48％のスタートアップの創業者が45歳以上であった。しかし４年後、生き残った企業の64％の創業者が45歳以上であった。これは、年配の創立者を持つスタートアップの生存率が高いことを意味している。驚いた? 私は驚かなかった。

As an older entrepreneur, I think our experience helps us in determining several key points in deciding to create a company.

・Defining the problem: As Steve Blank would say, ‘do you have a “hair on fire” problem or is it just “nice to have”?’ For example, when I decided to start kluje.com, I was first drawing on my experience as a homeowner, and trying to get a renovation done on my condo. As it turns out, I found other homeowners with the same frustrations.

・As more mature adults, we have had a bit more experience in the business world, especially with complex tasks which helps us better cope with the demands of being an entrepreneur.

１人の年配のアントレプレナーとして私は、会社を作る決定をする際の重要なポイントを決定するのに経験が役立つと考える。

What does this mean?

By allowing online and electronic payments, it streamlines the process and lessens queues in government offices.

The Makati City government office makes for a good comparison. Since it still uses cash for its payroll of over 9,000 employees, it causes downtime for the entire office.

Clearly, a swipe of an ATM or credit card or a few clicks through an m-payment gateway can make things simpler. And safer for people. Plus, it can help lessen under-the-table charges on cash transactions – ie: bribery.

これが意味するものは?

ネット上、電子的な支払いを認めることで、役所の仕事の無駄と行列を少なくできる。

Makati市当局は比較するのによい例だ。ここでは9,000人を超える職員への給与を今だに現金で支払っているため、役所全体でダウンタイムが生じてしまう。

Challenges vs opportunities

The Philippines leads in mobile payments in Asia, and with the availability of the telco’s e-wallets, it’s something that citizens can take advantage of with ease.

But the banking penetration rate in the Philippines is at just 27 percent. And from this number, only three percent own a credit card. So are people ready for what Valenzuela City is rolling out to its citizens?

The Valenzuela City government also plans on expanding the system to include payments for business permits and license fees, public market and stall retail fees, and public terminal and parking fees. It also aims to use the m-payment service for its payroll system and payment of utility bills in the near future.

It is said to be the first time for a municipality to do this in the Philippines. Perhaps it will kickstart other local authorities to modernize. Once more cities offer this, the more efficient the country becomes. Also, who knows, it might help increase usage of online payment in the Philippines for e-commerce as well.

Indonesians are open to experimenting with new social networking products, as we’ve seen with the uptake of Path in the country. So let’s see how this app will fare in the coming months.

The Join team plans to launch its website and iOS app in two months’ time. The startup hopes it can reach 100,000 users by the end of Q1.

“We envision the technology to be used in applications ranging from driving (such as people who go on long road trips or people who get drowsy while driving), to students who tend to get drowsy in class, to office professionals. We are also exploring B2B opportunities such as professional drivers (such as truck and taxi drivers), security guards, machinery operators and night shift workers,” says Vigo co-founder Jason Gui, who is from Shenzhen.

Vigo was born out of a senior capstone project while the team members were engineering students at the University of Pennsylvania. The team worked on it as their capstone project, and received extremely positive feedback from professors and fellow students who had experienced similar problems. This led the team to pursue Vigo full-time and turn it into a commercially available product.

Jason studied mechanical engineering with a focus on mechatronics at Penn Engineering and business at the Wharton School, and looks at the electronics and technical side of things at Vigo. Drew Karabinos did mechanical engineering with a focus on product design, and at Vigo focuses on the design/user interaction as well as the overall vision and direction of the product. Jonathan Kern did mechanical engineering and economics, and focuses more on the business and operations side of things.
