Several corporate chiefs and prominent entrepreneurs including Alfred Chia – CEO of SingCapital, Mohammad Ismail – CEO of Propnex, Alan Lim – Director of Propnex, Dan Lynn – VP of Asia-Pacific for vacation rental portal Homeaway, and the Co-Founders of Singapore-based live chat app Zopim -Roystan Tay and Kwok Yang Bin also joined.

MoneySmart plans to use the newly-raised capital to increase hiring across all teams to ramp up its content as well as build up a core team of developers.

It will also boost marketing efforts in Indonesia and Singapore, and launch into one new market. Beyond that, it will be launching an app in the near future.

“We are looking into expanding into either the Philippines, Thailand or Hong Kong by mid-next year,” said Vinod Nair, Founder and CEO of MoneySmart.sg.

He noted that in the Philippines, Internet penetration is still quite immature compared to Hong Kong while Thailand is in between.

The funds are expected to give the company a runaway of 12 to 18 months. After which, it plans to raise a Series B round.

Founded in October 2009 as SmartLoans.sg, the site allowed Singaporean users to compare and apply for home loans. Nair then went on to launch several independent niche sites for comparing credit cards and insurance packages.

He launched MoneySmart.sg in August 2012 as a personal finance blog and, in May 2014, consolidated all the sites into one portal.

Through partnerships with banks and insurance companies, MoneySmart.sg also provides personal finance services that cover the gamut – allowing users to compare and apply for different credit cards and personal and home loans, as well as insurance plans.

According to Nair, 70 to 80 per cent of its revenue – over SG$1 million (US$700,000) per year – comes from the personal finance services while about 20 to 30 per cent comes from advertising such as advertorials.

According to an official statement, MoneySmart gets 1.5 million page views and 500,000 unique visitors per month.

Its content syndication partners include digital news sites – AsiaOne.com (owned by SPH Media), MSN.com and Yahoo!. Last year, it also acquired an Indonesian counterpart, now known as DuitPintar, which sees 500,000 page views a month.

Weathering the storms

Nair, who was also one of the Co-Founders of e27, spoke at length at a press conference this afternoon on what he learned from his past failures and challenges.

“You can’t rely on just a single product vertical,” he said, expounding on the failure of his first startup, a real estate search engine. “You need to diversify and not rely on one product vertical if you want to be sustainable [business model].”

Nair, unfazed by the failure of his first venture, poured his whole savings of SG$5,000 (US$3,500) six years ago into founding SmartLoans.sg. For about one and a half years, it saw a healthy revenue growth with users taking up home loans through the site, before hitting an obstacle – property cooling measures that caused a significant drop in property sales.

“We were no longer cash flow positive, and our tiny reserves that we had built up over the months to fund expansion were quickly being bled dry. Thankfully, the very supportive people at NUS Enterprise offered to extend us a loan of SG$55,000 (US$35,800), which helped us see through some very tough times,” explained Nair.

Nair then sought to diversify the portfolio of services to generate more streams of revenue, launching SmartCredit.sg and SmartInsurance.sg to target the personal loans, credit cards and car insurance market, before starting MoneySmart.sg.

It was also able to leverage off the PDPA (Personal Data Protection Protection Act) laws passed in Singapore in 2014, which saw banks lose a major source of customer acquisition, forcing them to shift online to get referrals.

“Running a startup is kinda like surfing, you go out to sea, paddle like mad against the current and oncoming waves and wait for the big wave to go on the ride of your life,” said Nair.

Nair also stressed the importance of having a solid team.

“Ultimately to have a great surf, you need a good surfboard, and that’s my team. I could not have made it this far on my own,” he concluded.

For example, we opened up our transportation databases to the public in the framework of a competition to come up with innovative solutions to traffic issues. We were and continue to be impressed by the solutions and startups that have come off the back of that simple step of sharing our data. This is something any city around the world can implement in order to provide fodder for startups and potentially drive innovative solutions to municipal problems.

Cooperate and collaborate

While competition can be a huge spur for innovation and success, in Tel Aviv we’ve found that often the opposite can be just as true. We’ve tried to enable a city-wide atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation by building three city-funded coworking spaces where entrepreneurs can feed off each other’s energy and ideas. And we’ve seen the ecosystem respond – with a 138 percent growth in accelerators, coworking spaces, and innovation centers over the last three years.

The value of fostering cooperation rather than competition lies not only in conversation and idea sharing but, more importantly, in the creation of stronger networks of entrepreneurs who want to help each other. Ultimately, individual entrepreneurs looking to help each other out will lead to faster growth and more success for the overall ecosystem.

Incentivize

City life, while beneficial and exciting in many ways, often comes with a price. High rents or even something like a lack of easy parking can act as a deterrent to entrepreneurs looking to set up businesses in a particular location, while the high cost of living can prevent young talent from settling in a city.

競合よりも協力に力をいれる価値としては、意見やアイデアを交換しあうだけではなく、更に重要なこととして、お互い助けを必要とする企業家たちの強いネットワークが構築できることです。結果として、協力し合う個人の企業家は、エコシステム全体にとって、迅速な成長とより大きな成功をもたらすのです。

In order to combat this problem, Tel Aviv offers various municipal tax reductions to entrepreneurs and startups looking to open up shop – such as a reduction of taxes on certain offices. In addition, the city has pursued several initiatives to make city life attractive to young people, from city-wide free WiFi to a bike sharing system and regular free cultural events. Making it easier and more comfortable for young people to live in the city hub is critical, since young talent is the lifeblood of innovation and growth.

Diversify

In order to further the growth of any ecosystem, it is important to have a diverse range of ideas, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences to broaden the scope of potential startups and to create a more fruitful ecosystem. One major hurdle we are trying to overcome currently in Tel Aviv is that 98 percent of the workers in the startup sector are Israeli. This is in comparison to Silicon Valley, where 50 percent of the startup population are foreigners.

Our response to this has been to start city-to-city collaborations with places like Berlin, London, Paris, and New York, where entrepreneurs from one city will be empowered to work and conduct business in another participating city. Entrepreneurs using this initiative will be able to get a free desk at a coworking space, a mentor from the community, and even get connected to startup companies from their fields – which are resources any city could make available to visiting entrepreneurs. Another effective initiative to consider is a special “startup visa,” which can help to encourage foreign talent to move to your city and work there.

Ultimately, our greatest success in Tel Aviv has come from our commitment to listening to our residents and community of entrepreneurs to leverage their insight, skill, and innovative ideas to help us improve urban life on every level. Building a successful startup ecosystem is only the first step to creating a mutually beneficial relationship where city and tech hub can constantly contribute to the improvement of each other.
