eBay Returns to China in ‘Style’, Focuses on Luxury Clothing

As anticipated, the US auctions site eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) has made a return, in a very low-key but stylish way, to the China market. On Monday it launched a joint-venture e-commerce store at ebay.xiu.com – dubbed “eBay Style” – that focuses on mid-range to high-end clothing, handbags, and accessories.

It features brands like Banana Republic and Clinique, right up to couture labels such as Guess and Coach. In total, there are already 5,000 brands on-board. eBay Style feels similar to the FashionVault market on its US website.

For this new attempt at the China market, eBay has partnered with the experienced local B2C e-tailer Xiu.com, which itself specializes in luxury brand clothing. Here’s the new frontpage for Chinese shoppers:

In many respects, eBay Style is a very late entrant to China’s luxury e-commerce segment, where it’s up against a wealth of competitors, from UK e-tailer Net-A-Porter, to high-end stores backed by major portals such as 360Top, to Xiu itself.

The company says that its items come from eBay’s top merchants, which is different to the usual B2C model among China’s top specialist e-commerce sites.

Kaifu Lee’s Innovation Works Invests in LeTV Subsidiary, Interested in ‘Super TV’

Readers with a sharp memory may be reading that headline and thinking, “Wait, didn’t we already know that?” and the answer is that yes, we did. Sort of. As we previously reported, Kaifu Lee announced several months ago that Innovation Works was interested in television and would invest in LeTV. Now, thanks to an official announcement from LeTV CEO Jia Yueting, we know that that transaction has been completed, and we know more details about the deal.

In actuality, Innovation Works is investing in one of LeTV’s subsidiary companies. It’s not clear what percentage of that company is now owned by Innovation Works because both sides signed a confidentiality agreement, but LeTV Zhixin reps confirmed that the investment funds were already in hand and that the deal was totally finalized.

LeTV has been pivoting towards television hardware and software for some time now, and the company’s COO says that it hopes to do for the smart TV market what Apple did for the the smartphone market. We’ve yet to see any LeTV Super TV hardware, so it’s not clear whether the device has that kind of revolutionary potential, but the attention and investment from Kaifu Lee are certainly an indication that LeTV Zhixin is working on something interesting. We hope we get a chance to see it soon.

Airbnb sets up office in Singapore, competes in Asia with Roomorama, Travelmob, iBilik

US short-term rental website Airbnb is stepping up its expansion into Asia, with an office already being set up in Singapore, reported CNET Asia.

The writer notes that instead of acquiring a local player, a strategy that Birchbox and Groupon employs, Airbnb has decided to compete directly with the likes of Roomorama, Travelmob, and iBilik instead. It will also be fighting for market share with 9flats, a German company that set up shop in Singapore last year.

iFlytek, a Chinese company already had similar offerings earlier this year dubbed iFlytek Yudian. The company’s speech-recognition technology comes with an accuracy rate of more than 90% in terms of Mandarin Chinese. Other than accuracy, it could also do lots of chores for you, just like your personal assistant at hand. For example, you can tell the phone to “text Ben, let’s have dinner tomorrow night 8”, it will translate your speech to texts and ask for your confirmation before sending out.

Yue didn’t reveal further details on how Baidu’s Siri would work though.

Japanese App Gets You There with Hybrid Map and Augmented Reality Display

A company in Japan is offering a clever mobile map alternative that combines a conventional map display with an augmented reality view in a split-screen presentation. It’s called AR-Maps, and is now available in English thanks to a recent upgrade.

The folks over at Diginfo news have a good video demonstration of the application (see below), showing the various modes available. If you input your destination, you can use the AR view to see your destination overlaid on a live camera view. If you happen to be lost, you can also send your current location to your friends, as a sort of mobile SOS for them to help you out. The app also lets you search for nearby points of interests, like cafes or restaurants.

The company behind the app, Crossfader, has very diplomatically allowed users to switch between Apple’s own maps solution and Google Maps for the map display.

The app has been doing respectably well in Apple’s Japanese app store since its initial launch this summer and briefly held the tap spot in the navigation category in August. A mid-October upgrade to version 1.3 has given it a resurgence that saw it return to number one for a day last month.

The latest version improves battery consumption, added English support, and also has a mode for when your iPhone is sitting in a fixed position, like if it’s mounted on a car dashboard.

GREE Is Wrong: Their Hybrid App/Browser Distribution Strategy Will Not Work [Social Games]

What I learned is that many people in the social gaming industry outside Japan don’t know that GREE and Mobage operator DeNA have actually been running multiple platforms in Japan over the last few years, not just one.

Apart from Yahoo Mobage on the PC, these are GREE and Mobage on:

・Japanese feature phones (browser-based)
・iOS (app-based)
・Android (app-based)
・smartphones (browser-based).

聞くところによると、海外のソーシャルゲーム業界の多くの人は、GREEとMobageのオペレーターDeNAがここ数年間、日本で１つでけでなく複数のプラットフォームを運営していることを知らないらしい。

パソコン上のYahoo Mobageとは別に、以下のようなデバイスにもGREEとMobageが搭載されている。

For a lot of games, i.e. 2D card battle games that require no sound, GREE and Mobage (plus their third-party devs) go for the browser on smartphones, as the 30% tax by Apple and Google isn’t an issue. And in this case, even Japanese iPhone users can pay for items via carrier billing.

To make it clear: in Japan, DeNA and GREE try everything in their power to avoid the App Store and Google Play, as they lose control, have to follow Apple’s and Google’s guidelines, and pay 30% fees on every single cent (or yen) their own and third-party games generate over their lifetime.

So far, this hybrid distribution strategy has worked in Japan. Many old feature phone hits, which are technically limited by nature, have been simply ported to smartphone browsers, especially in the early days of iOS and Android. I have even seen quick and dirty ports of games where users are still told to “press a key” to skip a cut scene. Japanese users seem to be OK with this so far.

So far, DeNA has resisted to the urge to offer web-based games internationally to circumvent the Apple and Android ecosystems.

But now GREE announced it is trying to do exactly that, via an “expansion of the HTML5 compatibility of the GREE platform” that’s supposed to start this month.

これまでのところ、ハイブリッド分配作戦は日本ではうまくいっている。多くの技術上の制約のある古いフィーチャーフォンはヒットしており、特に初期のiOS Androidではスマートフォンブラウザーを移植してきた。ユーザーがカットシーンをスキップするのに「キーを押してください」と指示される安くて質の悪いゲームも見てきた。今のところ日本のユーザーはそれで満足しているようだ。

In other words, GREE thinks that it can replicate their smartphone distribution model internationally – but I am pretty sure this won’t work.

It’s worse. It looks like GREE doesn’t know what they are doing outside Japan.

There are more than 2 or 3 reasons I can think of that speak against a “worldwide” hybrid distribution strategy. Here are just some examples:

・As stated by more than just a few people over the last months, HTML5 is not yet ready for prime time, at least not in games. It’s as simple as that. (Note: I am saying this as one of the believers in HTML5.)

・Mobile games are maturing at a fast clip, and many of the top titles can only be offered as native apps, not through the web. This is becoming more and more evident within Japan, too. Most of GREE’s own “next-generation” social games are app-only (example 1, 2, 3). And it makes sense, as users are getting more and more demanding over time. Mobile games in 2012 have nothing in common with those that have come out in 2008.
