あたらしい土地で情報を得る場合も職を探す場合も、「お願い」することが大事なのではなく、「自分はなにができるのか」ということを明確に伝えられる事が大事なんだと思います。
また、どうにか情報を得たいと思ってウロウロするより、自分はこのようなことが出来ると日々発信したほうが、結果的に情報が集まってくるものだとも思います。さらにはなにか得ようとするより、多くの人たちに良いことを与えようとすること。これが、いつの時代も大切なこと
で、実は情報時代を生き抜く秘訣なんだと思いますよ。

Not "asking a favor" but "making clear what I can do" must be important when you are collecting information as well as looking for a job in a new place.
Also, you may be able to collect more information after all if you share what you can do with others on a daily basis rather than just wandering around to collect information. And, you better do something good for many people than trying hard to get something for yourself. This theory could be always significant in any age, and be the key to survive in this age of information eventually.
