Jack Ma: why I’m more and more afraid of giving speeches
You probably know the name Jack Ma. The man is, after all, the chairman and founder of Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba, and his word carries some serious weight in Asian tech circles.
What you may not know is that Jack Ma occasionally blogs. So, once again, I’ve roughly translated his latest piece below. I think it’s a thought-provoking piece, both for those of us in the media and those of you who frequently speak to the media.

あなたはきっとJack Ma氏という名前を聞いたことがあるだろう。この男は、中国のeコマースの巨人Alibabaの会長兼設立者となった人で、彼の言葉はアジアの技術系サークルの中で特別な重みを持つ。
Jack Ma氏について、あまり知られていないのは、彼が時々ブログに投稿していることだ。そこで再び、彼の最近の言葉をおおまかに翻訳してみた。その内容は、私たちメディア業界にいる人間だけでなく、よくメディアに話しかける人にとっても深く考えさせられるものである。
When I was young, I thought that many people were too steady, dry, and boring when they spoke. Without even a shred of personal perspective, these people often spoke formally, grasping their speech and reading it aloud politely and seriously… but now I understand a lot of the reason [behind that approach].
Speech isn’t about how you say it, it’s about how other people hear it, or even scarier, how other people write, edit, quote, understand, and transmit it. The saying “trouble comes from the mouth” seems especially scary on today’s technologically-developed web. If you make a small mistake, the results can be disastrous.
私が若かった頃、人の話はあまりにも堅実で、無味乾燥で、退屈なことが多いなと思っていました。個人の見方に関する些細な発言もなく、スピーチの内容を噛み締め、大声で丁寧かつ真面目に読み上げながら、フォーマルな話をするのです。でも今では、(そのような方法を取る)理由がわかりました。
スピーチとは、いかに話すかの問題ではありません。それは、相手がいかに聞くか、もっと恐ろしいことを言えば、相手がいかに書き、編集し、引用し、理解し、伝達するかの問題なのです。「口は災いのもと」という諺は特に、今日の技術的に進化したウェブ上では恐ろしいものになるようです。ちょっとした間違いをすると、破滅的な結末がもたらされることもあるのです。
I come from teachers, and I naturally enjoy communication, but I’m more and more afraid of giving speeches, interviews, and communicating. The reason is that every audience’s attitude is different, and every editor’s goals and angles are different. The same sentence that was so funny in its original atmosphere can be edited into a truly terrifying headline. (Sometimes, a joke told onstage that gets edited into a headline can cause you to offend someone forever, and there’s no way to make up for it or explain it).
私は教師出身で、元来コミュニケーションを楽しむ方ですが、スピーチをしたり、インタビューを受けたり、コミュニケーションをするのがだんだん怖くなってきました。その理由は、聴衆の方の態度が異なり、編集者、エンジェル投資家の目的も異なるからです。もともとの雰囲気では面白かった内容が、実に恐ろしい見出しになることもあるのです(時々、ステージ上で話したジョークが見出しとなり、それが他人を延々と攻撃する内容であったりします。それについて弁明をしたり説明をする手段はないのです)。
So the sensible speak less and less, and speeches without any point of view and more and more common. Speaking the truth is what should be done, but if you say something wrong or controversial or make a joke, another eye may see it as a terrible headline. Even worse is when editors guess or have a motive in grafting [things you said] together to create your headline.
そして分別のある者はますます語らなくなり、視点のないスピーチがますます一般的になっています。真実を話すという事が本来なされるべき事でありますが、仮に間違った事を言ったり、議論を引き起こすような事を話したり、ジョークを言ったりすれば、他人の目にはひどい見出しに映ってしまうかもしれません。更にひどいのは、編集者が〔あなたが話した事〕を推測したり、つなぎ合わせて見出しを作ってしまう事です。
Recently some topics surrounding me, especially those labeled “foreign media reports”, are even more inexplicable. Ha ha ha, for example, “got drunk and bought a sports team,” “five major banks want to kill me,” “mistreat me yesterday and I’ll destroy you today.” Especially when it comes to sensitive topics, many people may not have bad intentions but these things [i.e., being misquoted and misinterpreted] can add up to have very negative consequences. But when you run into a listener with ulterior motives, that’s the real trouble. Here with my own “weak mind,” I’ve already offended many friends and friends I haven’t met yet, so consider this an apology!
近頃、私を取り巻く話題、とりわけ「海外メディアの報道」とされる話題は、いっそう訳がわかりません。笑っちゃいます。例えば「酔っぱらって、スポーツチームを買った」「5つの大手銀行が、私を殺したがっている」「昨日、私を酷く扱ったから、今日は、あなたを破滅させる」とか。とりわけ、取扱いが難しい問題のこととなれば、悪意を持たない人が多いかもしれませんが、これらのこと「つまり、誤って引用されたり、誤解されたりすること」は、結局は、非常に悪い結果をもたらすことにもなりかねません。しかし本当に厄介なのは、下心を持つ聞き手に出くわした時です。私自身の「意志の弱さ」で、既に多くの友人たち、そしてまだ出会っていない友人たちの気分を害してしまっています。ですから、これを、謝罪だと思ってください！
You can’t blame today’s tech media, and you can’t blame the listeners for how they accept what you say or the transmitters for their power. If you want to blame something, blame your own vanity, carelessness, and the fact that your effort is too low while the number of speeches you’re giving is too high.
今日のメディア技術を非難することはできない。また、聞き手があなたの発言や伝達者をどう受け止めても非難できない。
もしあなたが何かを責めたいのなら、あなた自身の慢心、不注意、そして口先だけで努力足らずだということを責めなさい。
