The Bridge

“If the mission of Cornell Tech is to bring together academia and industry to spur innovation and the commercialization of new products and technologies, then The Bridge is really the physical manifestation of that mission,” said Kate Bicknell, senior vice president at Forest City Ratner Companies.

The Bridge will be Cornell Tech’s pièce de résistance in many ways. The mixed-use building will foster major tech companies, startups, labs, incubators, and coworking spaces. Cornell envisions this space as its Bell Labs — a place where unlikely innovators will cross paths.

The building will be 230,000 square feet and will be designed by Weiss/Manfredi, an architectural firm known for incorporating outdoor landscape into its designs. Cornell will occupy a third of the building, and the rest will be reserved for tech companies of various sizes and stages. Bicknell said the cost of doing business in the Bridge will largely depend on the type of space being rented and how much funding, if any, the inquiring company has.

Why Go-Jek drivers demonstrated in Jakarta today (Update: management responds)

Go-Jek, Indonesia’s most prominent on-demand transportation startup, made headlines at the beginning of this month when some drivers turned to the press. They were disappointed that Go-Jek’s management made changes to the way drivers are compensated, seemingly overnight.

“We were notified on Sunday, November 1, and [the changes] immediately went into effect by Monday [November 2], we weren’t given the chance to say our opinion,” a driver called Dika told Viva News (link in Indonesian).

Raksul, one of the best-funded startups in Japan with more than US$51 million raised to date, is expanding outside of Japan. But Yasukane’s strategy is to invest in – and perhaps eventually acquire – local printing startups in other Asian markets. Indonesia is Raksul’s first target.

“Right now, there’s no ecommerce printing option in Indonesia, but consumers want it,” Yasukane tells Tech in Asia. “Existing players are the physical shops like Kinkos. You have to go pick up your order, and the traffic is so bad in a city like Jakarta. This ‘shop style’ is how people in the US and Japan did their printing in the 80s and 90s.”

Taiwan's Appier raises US$23M in Series B round

Investing in the adtech firm’s latest round are UOB Venture Management Pte Ltd (UOBVM), Sequoia India, JAFCO Asia, TransLink Capital and MediaTek Ventures

Taiwan-based artificial intelligence and advertising technology company Appier today announced raising US$23 million in a Series B round from UOB Venture Management Pte Ltd (UOBVM), Sequoia India, JAFCO Asia, TransLink Capital and MediaTek Ventures.

To date, Appier has raised a total of US$30 million, including a Series A round of US$6 million led by Sequoia Capital last year.

広告テクノロジー企業Appierの最新ラウンドにおいて投資を行ったのは次の各社である：UOB Venture Management Pte Ltd (UOBVM)、Sequoia India、 JAFCO Asia、TransLink Capital、MediaTek Ventures。

The three-year-old company will use the funds to continue developing “innovative products”, boost recruitment efforts for its research and development team, and further expand in Asia.

Currently, it has business operations in more than 10 cities in the region, with over 100 staffers on its payroll.

Appier is best known for its range of cross-screen solutions. Cross-screen, in this case, refers to the different devices used to display advertisements, from smartphones to laptops to tablets.

For example, Appier can help brands identify devices that share the same owner, and re-market products to those consumers, even if they are on a different gadget.

It also uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to optimise advertising campaigns for brands and be able to foretell what users will do on different devices at different hours of the day.

“We are living in a post-mobile era: the era of cross-screen,” said Chih-Han Yu, CEO and Co-founder, Appier.

“Appier has assembled a team of very accomplished AI scientists for solving a very important and challenging set of problems in the cross-screen Internet era,” said Shailendra Singh, Managing Director, Sequoia Capital India Advisors.

In a press release, Appier boasted that it had grown over 300 per cent in the last 12 months, and 600 per cent since June 2014.

Singh added, “Their stellar growth across countries, borne out of results delivered for 500 advertisers, gives us a high conviction that Appier can continue to scale rapidly.”

Edward J. Lee, Associate Director, JAFCO Asia, also spoke highly of Appier’s growth over the last three years. “We’re very excited to partner with them to fuel their next phase of expansion in Japan and across Asia,” he concluded.

Vending Machine Operator Ubox Lands $85M USD Fresh Funding From Carlyle Group

China’s leading vending company Ubox has secured 530 million RMB ($85 million USD) in funding from Carlyle Group in exchange for an undisclosed stake. The investment was made through the Carlyle Beijing Partners Fund, an RMB fund the investment institution has established with the support of the Beijing government.

The financing is earmarked to expand Ubox’s vending machine network across the country, improve its digital advertising businesses, and develop more value-added services.

Founded in 2010, Ubox is a key player in China’s vending machine industry. In addition to traditional vending services, Ubox is known for its pioneering O2O efforts in operating interactive vending machines, which enables customers to make purchases through their mobile app and then pick goods from offline vending devices.
Ubox machines support multiple payment methods ranging from credit/debit cards, to more popular mobile payment options like Alipay or WeChat Payment. Not only from retail sales, the company also makes money through ads on its online platform.

Operated under a franchise model, Ubox runs more than 30,000 machines across 58 cities in locations like transit stations and shopping malls across China, according to the company.
“China’s vending machine market is still at an early stage of development, with great potential for growth. The industry has seen an accelerated pace of growth in recent years, driven by increasing disposable income, rising urban population density and consumers’ preference for convenient lifestyles.” said Eric Zhang, managing director of the Carlyle Asia buyout team.

同社によると、フランチャイズ制度の下、Uboxは中国全土の58都市の駅やショッピングセンターで3万台以上の自動販売機を運営している。

The deal points to the interest from foreign funds in China. As of June 2015, Carlyle Group has invested a combined $6.3 billion USD in 81 projects in China. The Ubox deal comes on the heels of Carlyle’s investment in transportation company Shanghai ANE Logistics Ltd. and equipment leasing firm JIC Leasing Co Ltd.

この取引からは海外ファンドの中国に対する関心が見て取れる。2015年6月時点でCarlyle Groupは、中国で合計81のプロジェクトに63億米ドルを投資している。今回のUboxへの投資は、Carlyleによる運送業のShanghai ANE Logistics Ltd.および機器リース業のJIC Leasing Co Ltd.に対する投資に続くものだ。

Symantec: Spam falls below 50% of all email for the first time since 2003

Good news for all of us who still have to use email: spam rates are dropping! In fact, junk messages now account for just 49.7 percent of all emails.

The latest figure comes from security firm Symantec’s June 2015 Intelligence Report, which notes this is the first time in over a decade that the rate has fallen below 50 percent. The last time the company recorded a similar spam rate was back in September 2003, or almost 12 years ago.

まだEメールを使わなければならない人にとって良いニュースだ。スパム比率が減少しつつある!　実際のところ、全Eメール中のスパムメールの比率は、現在たったの49.7%になった。

この最新の数値はセキュリティ会社のSymantecの2015年6月のIntelligence Reportによるもので、50%を下回るのは十数年ぶりであると指摘している。同社が最後にこのようなスパム比率を記録したのは2003年9月、つまりほぼ12年前のことである。

More specifically, Symantec saw 704 billion email messages sent in June, of which 353 billion were classified as spam. At one of the peaks of the spam epidemic, in June 2009, 5.7 trillion of the 6.3 trillion messages sent were spam, according to past data from Symantec.

The report uses Symantec clients to extrapolate the figure, so the actual rate could be a bit higher or lower. That said, the spam rate appears to be dropping: Symantec’s spam number was 52.1 percent in April and 51.5 percent in May.

具体的には、Symantec社は6月に7040億の送信Eメールを検査し、その内3530億をスパムと判定した。Symantecの過去の記録によると、スパム流行のピークの一つである2009年の6月には6兆3000億のメールのうち5兆7000億がスパムであった。

The decline of spam is usually attributed to legal prosecution against botnets (including by major tech companies like Microsoft), faster reaction times by network providers, improved blocking, and better filtering. The main goal is to make the business less lucrative: If you can slash profit margins for a spammer, you can slash spam itself.

This is great news for not just email users but companies that are dedicated to fighting spam. Their business isn’t going away anytime soon, but they are making progress.

スパムの減少は通常、ボットネットに対する（Microsoft社のような大テクノロージー企業によるものも含む）法的措置、ネットワークプロバイダーによる迅速な対応、ブロッキングの改善、そしてフィルタリングの改良のおかげとされる。主な目的は、スパム業をできるだけ儲からなくすることだ。スパム業者の利益を削ることができれば、スパム業者自体を減らすことができる。

これはEメールユーザだけでなく、スパム対策に特化した企業にとっても朗報である。これらの企業の仕事が近いうちに無くなることはないが、効果は上がってきているのだ。

Other findings in the report, which talks about not just spam but security overall, include:

・57.6 million new malware variants were created in June, up from 44.5 million pieces of malware created in May and 29.2 million in April.

・Ransomware attack has increased for the second month in a row and crypto-ransomware has reached its highest levels since December 2014.

After 10 breakthroughs and $3B in research, IBM announces tiny 7-nanometer chips

In semiconductor chip research, IBM has been racking up the breakthroughs for decades. And now it says that work is paying off with the creation of the first 7-nanometer chips. This means that the miniaturized electronics are so small that transistors on the chips are only 7 billionth of a meter in length. That’s 1,400 times smaller than a human hair.
