Xiaomi to Expand to Ten more Countries, Officially Launches Smart WiFi Routers

Xiaomi, the Chinese smart device and mobile service provider, has launched a new website, Mi.com, for the company wants to make it easier for non-Chinese to say the company’s name, Lei Jun, CEO of the company, said today at a press event in Beijing. Actually the company was named after MI; abbr. Mobile Internet. The new domain name cost USD3.6 million.

中国のスマートデバイスおよびモバイルサービスプロバイダのXiaomiが新しいウェブサイトMi.comを開始した。CEOのLei Jun氏は中国人以外でも社名を言いやすいようにしたいと北京でのプレスイベントで述べた。実際、この会社はMobile Internetの略のMIから名づけられている。この新しいドメイン名は360万米ドルした。

Mr. Lei announced today that Xiaomi will expand to ten more countries in 2014 as the initial expansion to Taiwan, Hong Kong and, more recently, Singapore performed “way better than expected”. The ten are less-developed markets in Asia, Europe and South America, including Malaysia, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Turkey, Brazil and Mexico.

Xiaomi ships products overseas from two warehouses in Shenzhen and Taiwan. It partners with third-party logistics services for product delivery.

MIUI, the customized Android system for smartphone, smart TV and other Xiaomi devices, now has 25 language versions and 2 million users outside China.

Xiaomi’s international business is overseen by Lin Bin, President and co-founder (a former exec at Google China), and Hugo Barra, former Vice President of Android at Google who joined Xiaomi last year.

Xiaomi officially launched the smart WiFi router series today. Apart from the high-end one released in late 2013, another one, smaller and with lower specs, debuted today — sorry to tell you its name is Xiaomi Router Mini. The high-end one is priced at RMB 699 (a little more than USD100) and the smaller one will be sold for RMB129 (roughly USD21). They are made by Foxconn.

The Linux-based operating system in the routers is named MiWiFi. The apps pre-loaded include one that helps users in mainland China visit websites that have been inaccessible — You know what I mean. As we reported before, a smart home solution, supported by Broadlink, has been introduced to Xiaomi routers so that users will be able to control connected home appliances through mobile apps.

The company has also improved its set-top box that now supports 4K videos.

11 million Xiaomi smartphones were sold in the first quarter of 2014, which encouraged the company to upgrade the goal for this year to 60 million. That’s more than three times of the number in 2013 which is 18.7 million.

The importance of hardware itself may reduce in the future with freemium model becoming a tendency. What matters most is the data collected by the smart gadgets. Shen Bo, head of Cocoon, once noted that what he valued most is Codoon Workout, the accompanying app for Codoon wristband which recorded more than 20 million installs so far (source in Chinese).

Smart Router

Smart WiFi router is expected to become the next hotspot of hardware sector, as more and more Chinese companies consented on the idea that smart router is the very gateway that can take control of Internet access and have impact on content consumption in families or working spaces.

WeChat said the Chinese speech recognition technology was developed in house. Baidu, the Chinese search giant, also has been working on it and opened up its own speech recognition technologies in August this year. In China’s speech recognition market, currently the biggest player is iFlytek which has an estimated 70% market share.

Kaado: Social Gifting Mobile App with Personalized Present Gallery

While gift giving is a very kind way of showing love, care and gratitude, people adopted a busy lifestyle often tends to forget special occasions for their beloved ones.

Kaado, a social mobile application developed by Beijing Joyful Technology, aims to tackle this problem by allowing users to choose and send impromptu gift cards to friends and family members.

The app will send alerts to users when birthdays or anniversaries of friends are approaching after they are connected with friends from different channels, such as, phone contacts, QQ, Weibo, and Renren.

With special focus on social functions, Kaado allows users to share gift cards to other social communities. This function enables the platform to transform the social footprint to personalize recommendation engine, because the trending products in the market are handpicked by real people to share.

The app integrates various gift cards with photos, prices and detailed introductions. Users can pay for them via UnionPay or AliPay and then send them to friends directly.

The app is available on both iOS and Android platforms. Similar apps are Eliquan and Wowgift.

The gadget can identify what kind of sports the user is doing like running, swimming, or climbing and then track their route with smart algorithm. In order to encourage the users, the company developed a sports social game, where users can join fever activities around to reach achievements, even win rewards, and then, share the results to friends, making people’s fitness more funny and incentive.

大阪観光局は、12月5日・6日の２日間、大阪国際会議場で
「大阪 MICE ディスティネーション・ショーケース」を開催。同イベントは、今年4月に活動を開始した大阪観光局が、MICE開催地としての大阪の魅力を多くの主催者にアピールする場として新たに取組むもの。

Duriana: A new location-based P2P marketplace app from Alps Ventures

Named after the King of Fruits, Duriana will show users products in their immediate vicinity and provide instant communication between sellers and buyers

A new mobile location-based peer-to-peer marketplace app is in town. Named after the King of Fruits in Southeast Asia, Duriana announced its public release today on iOS and Android platforms.

果物の王様ドリアンから名付けられたDurianaを使えば、近所にある製品を紹介し、売り手と買い手の間ですぐにコミュニケーションを取ることができる。

新しいモバイル位置ベースP2Pマーケットプレイスアプリが登場した。東南アジアの果物の王様から名付けられたDurianaは、iOSとAndroid用に本日公開された。

Duriana was first founded in October 2013, and jointly started by Alps Ventures, an incubator with offices in Singapore and Vienna, and former Managing Directors of Rocket Internet in Latin America, Camilo Paredes and Amanda Ernst.

Prior to its public release, Duriana had a three-week long beta testing period where it invited sellers to list their items on the platform. While Ernst declined to disclose the number of listings available on the app, she tells e27, “We have now officially launched but we are still working to improve the product and users will see ongoing improvements.”

As a mobile-first marketplace, the app will show users products in their immediate vicinity, and provide instant communication between sellers and buyers. Instead of registering directly, users can also log in through Facebook or Twitter.

Competition? What about Carousell?

Ernst says that when they had first started designing Duriana in April, the team was not aware of Carousell, another local peer-to-peer mobile-first marketplace app.

She adds, “We know we are still at the beginning and this brings beauty but also challenges. We will focus on quality and niches to break the liquidity challenges of every market and hope to delight our users with the offering we have.”

Meanwhile, Duriana will not be expanding to other geographies soon; Ernst shares that the team believes in focus and will play it one market at a time.
