The Eight Contenders

1. Tencent’s App Store arrived on the scene last week, just in time to complement its desktop syncing Tencent App Assistant from last month. It’s a very social store, allowing for login with a QQ number, and features sharing and commenting on the apps in the store. Between this and its desktop counterpart, it seems that Tencent is implementing app, photo, and music sharing on Android better than Google is managing it. Take a look here.

2. PeaPod is a Chinese start-up that got into the Android syncing business earlier than most, and is the only other example of opting for a desktop-only approach to a Chinese-made Android store. It’s an Innovation Works product, which means the firm has been incubated by Li Kai-fu, one of China’s leading web gurus and entrepreneurs (and former head of Google China). 4. HiMarket / HiAPK has had funding from NetDragon, which we encountered last week in a list of market revenue from online gaming in China (though NetDragon raked in only 1.5 percent of the total). Its HiMarket, as with numbers three to eight on this list, can be added to any existing Android app. Alternatively, it can often be found pre-installed on grey-import devices, especially on enormously popular unlocked HTC smartphones. 5. GoMarket / GoAPK grew out of its riotously popular BBS, where users share free and pirated apps. Now a standalone market app – again, often found pre-installed on bootleg (but genuine) HTC phones in China – it features ad-supported or mostly licensed apps that it publishes with the overseas developer’s consent, in a similar manner to all the other stores on this list. 6. N-Duo Market / Nduoa had been graced in the past with backing from Shanda, but that has fizzled out. Nonetheless, it is soldiering on, and has one of the best-looking tablet versions of its marketplace app. Give it a look over on this link.

8. Lastly, GFans leads us to the grassroots of Android app sharing in China. Although it started out as a mere forum – replete with piracy of paid apps – GFans has gone through some revamps and rethinks to make it into a fairly popular and pretty much legit app spource. It’s also thinking ahead, with a cute tablet version of its own app store.

So, there’s the list. As Android edges towards 20 million users in China, these stores have some chance to build on the popularity of Google’s Android, and build up their start-up into the bargain.

Of course, China’s three telcos have app stores of their own, but they lack the range and selection of these other marketplaces, making them something of a ‘chump-choice’ for people who haven’t figured out where to get other stuff. Which is a pity, as no-one has yet properly figured out a decent app payment system in China. The telcos have implemented carrier billing, but their paltry offerings are not yet convincing enough for it to take off.

Taking a Bigger Bite Than Expected, Sina Takes 9% of Tudou.com

China’s second-biggest video-sharing site Tudou.com (NASDAQ:TUDO) nailed its US IPO two weeks ago, and since then has been courting attention from Sina (NASDAQ:SINA). Last Monday we reported that Sina had effectively bought up four percent of Tudou, and now today an SEC filing reveals that Sina has actually taken an even bigger bite of Tudou – a full 9.05 percent.

Meituan Delivers US$ 15M Sales Record In July

According to Wang Xin, CEO of group buying service Meituan, the company generated record sales in this July of over RMB 100 million (US$ 15.67 million), up 20% month-over-month. Meituan landed a total of RMB 230 million (US$ 36 million) in last year’s sales, while for this year the volume is expected to be over RMB 1.6 billion (US$ 250 million).

Wang is a famous internet figure and serial entrepreneur, he founded Fanfou.com, the first twitter-like service in China and Xiaonei, which was acquired and rebranded as Renren.

Wang said that, the number of group buying sites in China is declining since half a year ago. And he believes that eventually, the No.1 group buying site will take over 70% of all the daily deals market while the second one will grasp 20%, and the rest will have to scramble for the remaining 10%.

According to Hitwise, an internet data research firm, Meituan comes in third in traffic after Lashou and Taobao Juhuasuan(淘宝聚划算). However, Wang claims that Meituan is the largest in terms of local services; for instance, the Chinese Groupon-like service boasts a total of nearly 300 deals per day with over 100,000 orders.

A Peek Into DianDian’s New Office

We’ve reported on DianDian’s super fast speed. After only three months in the Innovation Works office, the light-blogging start-up based on the popular Western micro-blog, Tumblr.com, moved out into it’s own office. After raising an whopping US$10 million in funding from Sequoia Capital and Ceyuan Ventures, DianDian founder Jack Xu, wanted to aggressively expand his team and user base which now stands at over 3 million and aims to capture 10 million by year end.

Last Friday, Ben and I were invited to chat to Jack and have a quick look at the impressive office. It really felt more like an American style office of a well funded start-up. When chatting to Jack, we were generously given coke, tea and a nice big juicy apple sitting on a nice comfy couch over looking Tsinghua and Peking University in the distance.

The workers themselves looked very comfortable, sitting in expensive ergonomic chairs with air inflated head rests. The group meeting behind us flashy new Mac Book Air’s, reviewing a screen.
