Even so, Beast War is the best Weibo game I’ve played yet. Or, perhaps my expectations are dropping and I’m just learning to settle. Either way, it doesn’t matter — there’s still nothing here that would convince me to spend money because the fundamental monetization strategy of all these games is: spend money to make the game not boring. Beast War stands on its own better than any of the other offerings I’ve seen, but that doesn’t mean it deserves to be in the pantheon of games I will pay money for.

Digital Divide

Social inequality is also traceable in the digital world both in Brazil and China. In Brazil, among the poorest 10% only 0.6% have Internet access. Among the richest 10%, 56.3% are online. In reginal terms, Internet access in the South (25.6%) and Southeast (26.6%) contrasts clearly with the North (12%) and Northeast (11.9%) according to research conducted by Ibope/Nielsen. This gap is clearly less perceivable in China, where Tier 1 cities like Shanghai or Beijing, have over 34% of its population online, while in less developed cities (Tier 3) have a 28% internet penetration rate (Incitez.com).

When it comes to social networking, the most noticeable trend in both countries is their growing addiction to micro-blogging. According to Mercopress, Brazil still sits in the top three countries with the highest Twitter penetration (24%) and China proves to have the fastest growing micro-blogging sphere of all times. Introduced in August 2009 by Sina, one of China’s leading information portals, the Twitter like “Weibo”, is already used by 24% of Tier one citizens, which represents 250 million users according to CIC a local leading business intelligence provider.

Weibo, quickly went from being perceived as a copycat product to an innovative one and is now an inspiration for Twitter, for third party, video or image integration.


There is also consensus in the industry that the economy in Brazil will continue to grow despite the Euro zone problems and the slow growth in the U.S. In addition, online ad spending is expected to skyrocket because of the 2014 FIFA World Cup of Soccer and the 2016 Summer Olympics – both of which will be hosted by Brazil. Expect new and important digital players coming Latin America’s largest economy in 2012.

China’s numbers speak for themselves, investment opportunities are plenty. Developing e-businesses for example, as according to Dong Baoqing, deputy director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s promotion department, “the sales volume of China’s e-commerce will annually grow at least 32 percent year-on-year from 2011 to 2015. We estimate a transaction volume of 18 trillion yuan ($2.8 trillion) in 2015.” However, one will have to thoroughly study and understand the market before succeding in establishing a profitable enterprise in China. As an old Chinese proverb says ru xiang sui su (入乡随俗), when in Rome, do as Romans do, and this is definitely applicable in both countries.

Letao Raising $30M in Series D

China’s Zappos Letao is raising US$ 30 million in Series D from investors including Ceyuan Capital, DT Capital Partners and Tiger Fund which all participated in the company’s previous fundings. Letao didn’t mention who led this round of financing though.

Letao could live well for another three or four years without making any money by counting on their reduced operating cost, according to Hugo Chen, Vice President of Letao. Investors didn’t urge the company to make profit in 2012, but they’re targeting the goal with new moves in this year like business structure restructuring.

The Beijing-based company’s arch-rivals include OKbuy, S.cn and Yougou. OKbuy got investments from Tencent, leaning on Taobao S.cn has done something, Yougou is backed by Belle, the No. 1 woman’s shoe retailer in China. None of them made a penny in last year, and frankly, the whole online shoe selling business hasn’t been able to make profit in China yet. We can do the math, gross profit for the sector is between 20% and 30%, after subtracting logistic costs (accounting for 10% of per customer transaction), marketing expense (30%, up to 50%), everyone is bleeding money.

And year 2012 will still be seeing them ferociously competing against each other. Yougou and Okbuy will be keeping expanding to scale up as it seems to many that size matter in Chine ecommerce battlefield, while Letao will try to retrench as well as restructure to (probably) make some money without growing (or bleeding money) too fast.

When in Hong Kong recently, I had the chance to meet up with Co-founder and CEO, Mikaal Abdulla. Here’s some insight into the company.


Disrupting the old school way of trading and democratizing it



There are many professional online trading systems on the market today. Many are targeted at the experienced and savvy investor and are usually too sophisticated to use for the amateur investor.

人々は、取引する市場を選択することができ、分析ツールを利用し、ニュースやリサーチ資料を読み、動画を視聴し、その他の投資家たちとソーシャルアプリを通じてコミュニケーションをとることができる。

先頃香港で、私は共同創始者であり最高経営責任者のMikaal Abdulla氏と会談する機会があった。こちらが企業の内情になる。

To make online investing more accessible to more people, 8securities is aiming to make things easier and fun.

The inspiration for creating 8securities was the founder’s frustration with traditional institutions having ideas, but no execution. The team is made up of many ex-E*trade executives so they know what needed to change, but couldn’t in such a large organization.

Going social, talking money

For many amateur traders, investing can be rather daunting. Betting on intangible things online would make many people uncomfortable. To ease the discomfort, 8securities makes trading more social by allowing investors to interact within a community.

Members are given an anonymous cartoon avatar where their identity is hidden but the trades are real. Reality is powerful compared to paper trades or ‘what-if’ or ‘what I think’ communities. This enables people to follow what they invest in, learn from each other and exchange ideas. Keeping identity private is important because it would be dangerous if people knew you made a lot of money or embarrassing if you lost a lot of money. Similar to the Google+ circles concept, members can form a closed group of investors to make it more private, like for their family.

Mikaal believes Hong Kong is the perfect place to launch this kind of product because it has 78% social penetration rate of total online population, coupled with 67% of investors having an online brokerage account. “Social networks will unlock investing ideas and knowledge from individuals. And how we shape, filter, and listen to those ideas is in our individual control. The 8 Securities Trading Portal is the first vehicle to bring it all together.”

Hong Kong also offers a prime location because people love to talk about friends and family, food, real estate and the stock market. It is wise that the company is capitalizing on what Hong Kong is good at.

Lower costs = Happy investors

8securities revenue model is simple; it charges investors for placing a buy/sell order. Since it uses technology rather than people to execute a trade, there are obvious cost savings. Mikaal said that “We intend to be significantly cheaper than the banks that dominate the landscape in Hong Kong. We will offer both HK and US markets from a single multi-currency account in HKD, RMB and USD.

The App Market, all research and content and the private social network will be offered to our customers at no additional cost. We will also not charge any of account maintenance fees that are so common in Hong Kong.”

Raised US$8m, no VCs!

It’s rare to find many start-ups raise more than US$5m without any VC backers, but 8securities managed to raise US$8m from private wealthy investors who believe in their vision. Part of the decision to go private was to keep more decision making power. The other reason is that Hong Kong is known to be not very start-up friendly, mainly because the market is too small and there is more security in finance or real estate. Mikaal explained the money will be used to expand to new geographies. “Our vision is to connect individual investors from around the world on our social trading platform.”

China – so close yet so hard

Hong Kong is less than 3 hours flight from China, the golden investing opportunity. However, there are some restrictions that prevent 8securities entering right now. “China financial regulation does not yet permit non Mailnland China brokerages to compete domestically. That said, we are very interested to find a forward looking partner that can help us launch our private social network in China. This partner may be a financial portal who would like to modernize and expand its services. When financial regulation in China eases, we of course look forward to establishing a presence on the ground.”

Why would you use it?

Being a web 2.0 start-up, the product has a heavy focus on intuitive design and usability. Additionally, 8securities will open up a proprietary Investing App Market that allows customers to download financial apps that help them invest smarter. The platform is also very flexible and allows customers to personalize the trading experience with different tools, research and multi-media. This helps cut out any noise and let’s people focus on only what they need. Mikaal also feels the “private social network will liberate people from the one sided control by the traditional banks and brokers.”

CyberAgent Sets Up Company to Run My365 Photo App, Targets 150M Downloads

A couple of months back we told you about a camera app from Japan called My365, which at that time had attracted more than 100,000 downloads over a ten-day span. Since then it has racked up over 300,000 downloads, gaining popularity abroad as well as in Japan. As we mentioned that the time, the organization of this photo app into a well-designed calendar presentation really makes it stand out as a sort of photo journal service.
