How to Prepare for Interviews at Technology Companies

“The reason is twofold,” says Gayle Laakmann McDowell, former Google, Microsoft, and Apple engineer and author of Cracking the Coding Interview. “One is that a lot of brainteasers rely on this ‘aha moment,’ where you suddenly get what the question is about. That becomes too random. There’s no reason to ask a brainteaser if it has nothing to do with computer science when you can ask one that tests both intelligence and knowledge of computer science.”

What’s more, adds McDowell — who interviewed more than 120 people in her work at Google — as books and blogs picked up on the novel brainteaser questions, it became difficult to determine whether or not brainteasers were testing what they were designed to test: think-on-your-feet reasoning skills. Here’s how these companies are approaching the interview process now.

What Kind of Questions You Should Expect

There are generally three types of interview questions:

1. Subject-specific brainteasers
2. Questions you’re likely to solve on the job
3. Questions with either multiple or no right answers

When you do get brainteasers, they’re going to be subject-specific. Charles Caldwell, senior engineer manager at LogiXML, a dashboard reporting software company, revealed some of his company’s go-to questions:

“You’ve got a database of everyone in the world, how do you segment it into logical categories?”
Write a function that finds the next least number in a binary search tree based on an input value.”
“How would you crawl the internet?”

Baidu Renames Music Service on the Day Google China Kills Its Own

Well, this is weird timing: the corpse of Google Music for China, which was shut by Google earlier today, is not even cold, and rival Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) has already jumped on the name, changing its own “Baidu Ting” service to the name “Baidu Music”.

Actually, that’s quite unfair, as Baidu has been slowly rebranding it Baidu Music for the past few months, as seen in its mobile apps. “Ting” means “listen” in Chinese, and seemed like a good name, bit apparently Baidu prefers the more obvious name. And so today – with not a very delicate sense of timing – the music website has changed its moniker.

Baiduは、自社のモバイルアプリからも見てとれるとおり、過去数ヶ月に渡りBaidu Musicを徐々に新しいイメージへと移行していっており、実はこれはかなりフェアじゃないやり方なのである。中国語で「Ting」は「聞く」の意味で、良いネーミングだと思われるが、Baiduはより明確で分かりやすいネーミングを好むようだ。そして、知性を感じさせるタイミングとは到底思うことはできない本日、この音楽サイトはその名称を変えた。

Baidu Ting was first launched in May of last year as a legal and fully-licensed music streaming and download service – and as a response to Google’s own China-only music site, which debuted a full two years earlier. It was an important move for Baidu, China’s biggest search engine, as it transitioned away from the pirate-friendly MP3 search and portal that had been causing consternation amongst local and global music labels. Baidu reached a landmark music licensing deal in July 2011 with One-Stop China, the local rep for major music labels like Universal, Warner, and Sony.

Ting.baidu.com now redirects to music.baidu.com, and “music” is the fifth button atop Baidu.com’s main search page. It looks like the MP3 section has been killed, and now all its downloads are free but licensed.

現在、Ting.baidu.comはmusic.baidu.comへとリダイレクトされ、「音楽（music）」はBaidu.comのメイン検索ページ上で5番目の位置を占めている。MP3セクションは排除され、現在、ダウンロードはライセンス化され全て無料となっている。

A representative cited another example involving cooperation with a famous shopping mall in Hong Kong called Harbor City. At the front gate, the mall set up a big QR code for people to scan with their phone, which lets people automatically become mall members in WeChat. Not only do they get messages and coupons like with Starbucks, but the membership also acts as a replacement for the traditional membership cards that makes people’s wallets so thick these days.

Tencent also looks to use a more localized marketing approach in the country for WeChat. The company is considering to make its app available on Blackberry, which is very popular in Indonesia, and also to create similar BBM packages, in conjunction with some telcos, for the local users. We’re told that WeChat is gaining steam in Indonesia, and eventually users would ask telcos to offer BBM-like packages for WeChat. We understand that so far the biggest WeChat users in Indonesia use Android.

User Behavior

Tencent already has another messaging app created specifically for Indonesia called Qute. We asked if there’s any confusion from the Indonesian users regarding WeChat and Qute, but we’re told there is not. The representative says that people’s focus is only on the app’s quality and brand name, not about the company behind it. This is similar to what happened with the QQ IM back in the early days in China. People then only knew QQ, but not so much about Tencent. Moreover, the rep agreed that the consumer target for both WeChat and Qute is different. The former focuses on smartphones, while the latter is on feature phones.
