We were sent this infographic recently from Tony Shin and his design team. The infographic is intended to “to help create discussion about the value and worth of an MBA and how sometimes people are misconstrued by this notion that if you don’t get more schooling, you won’t succeed. This infographic merely sheds light on the subject by showing other successful examples that didn’t need to get more schooling to succeed.” Says Shin.

Personally I have considered doing an MBA before. It seemed to be a natural path to continue on, during my consulting days. But then I wanted to get more into entrepreneurship and start-ups and figured there could be no substitute for doing entrepreneurship. However I have some very good friends who are extremely smart and have or are doing their MBA’s at the best schools in the world, like Stanford, Wharton, Harvard and Insead and believe they have gotten enormous value from doing their MBA. It really depends on the individual if it is worth it.

私も以前、MBAを取得しようと個人的に考えていた。私がコンサルティングをしていた時分には進むべき当然の道筋に思えていたのだ。だが、起業やスタートアップにもっと関わっていきたいと感じようになると、実際に起業すること以外に他に代わりになるものは無いのだということがわかったのだ。その一方で、私にはとても仲の良い友人が数名いるのだが、彼らはとても賢く、スタンフォードやウォートン、ハーバード、インシアドといった世界のトップスクールでのMBAをすでに取得済みか、あるいは取得している最中で、そんなMBAから大いなる価値を受けてきたと信じる人達である。だが実際のところ、MBAを取得する価値があるかどうかは人によるのだ。

The infographic shows that average salaries after an MBA are remaining stagnant while tuition fees are climbing meaning it become harder for students to pay off student loans and note that 1/5 MBA graduates default on their loans.

More interestingly they looked at some of the most successful business people without an MBA like Warren Buffet, Larry Ellison and Bill Gates. And only one US President, George W. Bush has an MBA and look how he turned out. The point being that an MBA does not guarantee business success. But of course these people are the exceptions.

BlackBerry “It’s Not a Toy” Video Made to Wake Up its Management and Refocus on Corporate

Last September I wrote a post titled “Can Blackberry Go From Enterprise to Consumer?” I argued both cases if they should try or not and if they did, could they succeed. At the time, my sense was that smartphones are so ubiquitous that the division between enterprise and consumer is fading so quickly that BlackBerry had to try transitioning and they did. But now it is quite obvious they failed and the RIM ship is heading for an iceberg as executives jump off.

Sales and sentiment has gotten so bad, it has come to the point where RIM is considering selling the company. They have also been taken to court after being accused of infringing six patents on chips. Total worldwide sales for last quarter have dropped 25% and 57% in the U.S. alone since last year.

BlackBerry tried to battle it out with iPhone and Android but clearly does not consumer DNA to compete. I remember talking to a representative from BlackBerry in Barcelona at an after party at the Mobile World Congress and he kept trying to convince me that BlackBerry was going to succeed by giving consumers all the apps they could ever want. But I just felt little hope and thought he was a little delusional.

Now after being smacked in the head by market reality, RIM is aiming to refocus on their roots in the corporate market and persuade loyal users (if any) that they can still deliver value.

With the aim of sending a clear message for RIM management to focus on the business consumer and do things right again, independent American film director, Pawel Pawelczak of Hand Hammered Films and admittedly heavy BlackBerry user has produced a commercial titled “It’s Not a Toy”. The independent commercial urges BlackBerry to realize that it is not a toy for fun but a serious tool for business people.

Pawelczak said “RIM’s announcement last Friday (March 30) that they’re shifting focus to corporate customers is a critical step in the right direction. They need to accept that BlackBerry users are a niche market. Instead of trying to have it both ways (i.e. “we’re like all the other smartphones, only better”), RIM should aggressively embrace what makes BlackBerry different, specifically: security, reliability, and integration with desktop office applications.”

I'm somewhat of a Gunpla builder so I'm really jealous that you can actually go to the SOURCE (i.e. Bandai) to get whatever you need.. even for paint, brushes, etc! Amazon China CEO: B2C is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

B2C in China is big business, and it’s a big business that Alibaba’s Tmall is currently kind of dominating. Taking a gander at the chart below might be intimidating for anyone running a B2C site in China that isn’t Tmall, but it doesn’t phase Amazon China’s CEO Wang Hanhua. In an interview with Southern Metropolis, he said that B2C is a marathon, not a sprint:

I’m most concerned with whether or not you’ve prepared for the marathon, whether or not you will be the final victor. When there are three to five companies left in the market at the end, will you be one of them?

Google Starts Work on Data Center in Taiwan

Internet search giant Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) today announced that it has started building a new data center in Changhua County in Taiwan, and has plans for limited testing and bringing it online in the second half of 2013.

This will be the third data center for Google in Asia, as it’s also working on two others which have yet to be completed. Those two centers in Singapore and Hong Kong are both scheduled to be completed in early 2013. But according to Google, the Taiwan data center will “be the first in [its] fleet to save energy through a nighttime cooling and thermal energy storage system.”

China’s Group Messaging Giant to Get English Name, WeChat, and Go Global

Weixin is already the world’s biggest group messaging app, having last week accrued 100 million users. But that was achieved mostly thanks to enthusiastic Chinese users. Now, new reports suggest that Tencent (HKG:0700), China’s social media giant, will give its app an English name – WeChat – in order to take it international.

The WeChat branding will come in v4.0 of the app which is due in the coming weeks. Already, Tencent has snagged the wechat.me URL but has not yet made the name changes evident on the site. The reasoning perhaps is that ‘Weixin’ is a puzzle to pronounce to non-Chinese speakers, especially that ‘x’ which would probably be mis-pronounced as ‘z’ or ‘s’ by speakers of most other languages (actually it’s fairly close to the English ‘sh’ phonic sound).
