One day he was served a raw gluten dengaku by a master of Japanese restaurant who was a regular at the tavern he worked. He says that was the very moment of "Awakening". He burst in that Japanese restaurant, received training for two years, and eventually due to disagreement with the master of Japanese restaurant, he ran out. After that he had an opportunity to meet an entrepreneur in Kyoto, which gave him a chance to open this restaurant.

Currently besides Kyoto, he has affiliated restaurants in Tokyo, Kanazawa, Paris and Hawaii that keeps his daily life busy flying around.

その同時期、谷崎潤一郎の「陰影礼賛」を読んで蛍光灯にひどく嫌悪感を感じていたり、日本の近代文化に関する光と闇の興亡にひどく敏感になっている時だったから、余計心に残るものが大きかったのかもしれない。

In 2003 I visited "Earth Art Festival" in an areal called Echigo-tsumari in Niigata, I was so overwhelmed to see the house of light.

In the same period, I had read Junichiro Tanizaki's "In Prase of Shadows" and I felt disgust about fluorescent lights, and was very sensitive to the fate of light and shadow related to Japanese modern cultures. Maybe that was because the impact was extremely huge.

この作品は家全体がジェームズ・タレルによる照明のコーディネートでできているのだが、リビングフロアーの開閉式の屋根部分から四角くのぞく空を見上げることが最大のポイントである。チェックインは必ず夕焼け前までに。夕陽が沈んでから、真っ暗になるまでの約30分程度のあいだ、急激に空の色が変化していく時間に、窓の内側から照らしているオレンジ色のLEDが、空の色に対応して徐々に明るく変化してゆき、切り抜かれた空と天井の色のコントラストが最も美しくなるように設計されている。

This piece uses entire house which lightings are coordinated by James Turrell. The most impressive point is to look up to the square-shaped sky which shows from the retractable roof in the living floor. Please be sure to check in before sunset. After sunset until the sky is completely dark, for approximately 30 minutes, in the time the color of sky quickly changes, orange LED lit from inside the window gradually turns bright according to the color of the sky. Clipped sky in contrast with ceiling light is designed to be most beautiful.

そもそも日本の家屋に蛍光灯を使い始めたことは、大きな大きな間違いの始まりだったのではないかと思う。高度経済成長期「明るいナショナル」の標語にあるように、家中から、町中の明かりという明かりを、蛍光灯に取り替えてしまったことによって、本来明るく照らす必要のない所まで照らされるようになった。その結果、汚れたものまではっきり見えるようになってしまい、すぐに取り替える文化が生まれ、

センスがいいのわるいのという議論を聞くたびに、センスというのは文字通り感じる力のことなのだから、センスが悪いというのは、純粋に感じる力がにぶいということなのだ。そもそも感じる力がにぶいのに、センスが良くなりたいとはどういうことだろうか。

Every time I hear the discussion about whether something has good or bad sense, sense literally means an ability to sense something, so bad sense purely means the ability to sense is dull. センスが良いというのは、いいことだけとは限らない。感じすぎてしまって、それはそれで大変なことなのに。だからこそ現代社会はそうして感覚を閉ざしていないと、生きていくことができないのもまた避けがたい事実である。

光の館は、そんな現代社会を痛烈に批判するとともに、閉ざされた感覚を多少なりとも開くことができる場所である。

各家々の下水部分の端池はすべて繋がっていて、上流の家で洗ったものが当然下流の家にも流れてくる。基本的には鯉が食べてしまうのでクズは流れてこないけれども、もしも上流でなにか毒性のあるものを流してしまったら、下流の鯉は全滅してしまったりするわけで、そのようなことが起こらないような地域としての信頼関係をベースとしてこの水のシステムは成り立っている。

Sewage reservoir of each house is all linked together, naturally drainage from houses on upper stream comes down to houses on lower stream. Basically chaffs are eaten by chaffs so they don't come down, but if anything poisonous is drained from upper stream, all carps in lower stream will die. This water system is built based upon the mutual trust within the local area to prevent such event.
