Brands with Interbrand status are entitled to use the Interbrands award seal on their packaging and in their advertising to show customers that they have achieved this recognition for their branding excellence (in the same way many companies expose ISO accreditation). Era of Free MP3 Downloads in China is Over, Paid Subscriptions Coming Next Year

It was only last summer that China entered the era of legal – and free – MP3 downloads, courtesy of web portals such as Baidu Music. But that heyday is already close to being over, with major sites like Baidu Music and Tencent’s (HKG:0700) QQ Music preparing to eliminate free downloads, to be replaced by monthly subscriptions.

中国がBaidu Musicなどのウェブポータルからの提供により、合法かつ無料のMP3ダウンロードの時代に突入したのはつい昨夏の事だ。しかし全盛期は既に終わりを告げようとしてる。Baidu MusicやTencent(HKG:0700)QQ Musicなど大手サイトが無料ダウンロードを取りやめ、月刊購読に切り替える準備を整えつつある。

Many Chinese sites that offer music will band together (in a rare show of unity) to implement these MP3 download subscriptions, starting at the beginning of next year. The anticipated cost will be in the range of 10 to 15 RMB (US$1.60 to $2.39) per month. Wang Hao, chief executive officer of music startup Xiami, tells the China Daily:

The era of the free lunch for China’s online music industry might be coming to an end.

中国の音楽配信サイトの多くは一致団結して（結束は珍しいことだが）来年初頭にもMP3ダウロード購読を実施する見込みだ。月刊購読料は10～15RMB（US$1.60～$2.39)と予想される。新興音楽企業であるXiamiの会長であるWang Hao氏はこう語る。

Xiami, Baidu, Tencent, and many others will keep online music streaming free of charge, and the subscriptions will apply only to downloads of licensed music MP3s. It’ll bring the Chinese music industry more in line with its very mature online gaming sector, where virtual currencies, paid extras, and monthly packages have been in action for nearly a decade. Xiami’s Wang Hao adds:

Good music is not getting the attention it deserves, while online games are making profits, and forcing musicians to earn money through other channels.

This could put small music labels on a par with game developers – thereby giving them a much better chance of monetization.

But despite a move towards licensed music content on major web portals in China in the past year, music piracy remains rife nationwide – both online and offline. So the shift to a subscription model – as seen in other markets on Rdio, Spotify, Rhapsody, and many more services – does also risk losing grasp of consumers who’ll go towards the path of least resistance. And that, for Chinese consumers, will be getting MP3 downloads from P2P services, or ripping pirated CDs onto their PCs and smartphones.

China’s 360Buy Reportedly Acquires Online Payments Company

360Buy, China’s second-biggest B2C e-commerce sites, looks to have acquired an online payments company. This is indicated by a recent filing with China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) which shows that 360Buy’s founder and CEO, Liu Qiangdong, is now listed as the legal representative of Beijing-based Chinabank Payments.

中国第2位のB2Cオンラインショッピングサイト360Buyがオンライン決済会社を買収するようだ。中国国家工商行政管理総局商標局（SAIC）が最近提出した文書によると、360Buyの設立者でCEOのLiu Qiandong氏は既に北京を拠点とするChinabank Paymentsの法定代理人に名を連ねている。

The switcheroo (Chinabank Payments’ CEO, Zhao Guodong, was the previously listed legal rep) suggests that 360Buy has acquired – wholly, or in large part – the online payment provider. Sources have told Chinese tech blogs, such as Sina Tech, that 360Buy will soon roll out a third-party payment service of its own. Indeed, rumors late last month suggested the same thing, and that the purchase is “basically complete” and will soon be made official by both sides.

この急展開（Chinabank PaymentsのCEOであるZhao Guodong氏、前法定代理人）は360Buyが全体、もしくは大部分のオンライン決済会社を買収したということを意味する。Sina Tech等の関係者がChinese tech blogsに語った所によると、360Buyはじきに第三者による決済サービスの開始を発表する見込みだ。実際、先月末も同様の噂が流れており、買収は「基本的に完了」済みで、近日両者から公式発表が行われる。

The move is very much aimed at Alibaba, China’s e-commerce titan, which also has its own payment solution, Alipay, which has a staggering 700 million registered users, mostly in China. 360Buy is second to Alibaba’s Tmall site in China. The 360Buy site accepts seven different online payment methods – none of which belong to arch-rival Alibaba. Surely 360Buy has been thinking about having its own payments platform for some time – I’m only surprised it took so long.

Chinabank Payments is a limited liability company that has RMB 100.5 million (US$16 million) in registered capital, and was started up in 2003. It’s a fairly big player in the industry, though not one of the largest. But the payments company has one thing that is absolutely golden: government-issued approval to operate online payments in the country.

360Buy is also thought to be developing an online ad platform as well. Earlier this month the e-commerce site took a tentative step into overseas markets, shipping some of its items to customers in 35 countries.
