Zaker: The News-Readin’, Page-Flippin’ Flipboard Clone [REVIEW]

Most successful international apps have a group of Chinese imitators. The success of magazine-style news-reading app Flipboard has brought with it many such Chinese “brothers,” such as Fruit, Netease reader, and perhaps the most popular of them all, Zaker. To commemorate its growing acclaim this year, it’s time to give it a mini-review.

世界中で成功しているアプリの多くは中国の偽物業者による。雑誌形式でニュースが読めるアプリFlipboardは中国で「兄弟版」アプリのFruit, Netease reader、そして最も人気のあるZakerをもたらした。今年の名声を祝って、ミニレビューをする時だ。

Zaker is made by Dooland, a web company founded in 2007, and has separate versions for iPhone and iPad. Like Flipboard – which got blocked in China back in May of this year – it carefully grabs news and interesting articles from numerous sources – from microblogs such as Weibo, blogs, news sites, and magazines, and updates in real time. Users can add their own sources via RSS and Google Reader.

As a reading app, Zaker has done much to improve the reading experience. Pages are turned with the same motion you would use to turn pages in a real magazine. Also, Zaker makes use of social networks such as Sina Weibo to allow you to share what you’re perusing.

Zakerは２００７年創立のウエブ会社Doolandによって作られた。そしてiPhoneとiPadに対応させている。今年５月に中国で禁止となったFlipboardのように、Zakerはニュースを念入りに選択し、様々な情報源から興味深い記事を拾ってくる。Weiboなどのブログ、ニュースサイト、雑誌、リアルタイムでアップデートされる情報など。ユーザーはRSS やGoogle Readerを使って、自分の情報源を追加出来る。

リーダーアプリとしてはZakerは読む経験を向上させるのに役にたったと言えるだろう。ページをめくるのは、あたかも実際に雑誌をめくっているかのようだ。またZakerはSina Weiboのようなソーシャルネットワークを使い、興味のあることをシェア出来るようになっている。

When you login to Zaker, it’s a bit like a Twitter or Weibo app, with vertical scrolling to browse content. You can click on any link and read the news or watch the videos directly in the app. Clicking on the screen in the upper right corner lets you send a new tweet (to Weibo, I mean). You can favourite, retweet, and comment on any tweets you like inside Zaker, making it into a sort of satellite social network. Also, when you write and send your tweet, you can directly use the camera to take pictures.

Zakerにログインすると、一見Twitter かWeiboのアプリのように見栄、縦にスクロールや検索が並んでいる。直接リンクをクリックして、ニュースを読んだり動画を見たりすることが出来る。右上のスクリーンをクリックすると、Weibo上でツイートすることが出来る。Zakerでお気に入りを追加したり、ツイートしたりコメントしたりでき、まるでサテライトのソーシャルネットワークのようである。またツイートするときは、カメラで写真を取ることができる。

Chen Chi-he, the CEO of Dooland, believes its advantage lies in the content. About 300 newspapers, 800 general news websites, and many magazines have cooperated with them in agreeing to aggregate content. Talking to Chinese tech site Hexun, he said:

"Copyright risk is what we questioned about Flipboard’s model, so we have to consider that fully by establishing a good relationship with the content side [...] We will try to combine with e-commerce, LBS, and games. But at this stage, what we should do first is build a user base."

In China, on a subway or bus, you often see people reading while commuting. The market for such readers will surely only get bigger here, especially as Apple and its iOS gadgets grow in popularity in China. Perhaps Zaker will lead the reading revolution here.

Japan Develops Augmented Reality Breasts for the Kinect


Much has been said in the past about how weird and crazy Japan can be. But we just stumbled across an amazing Kinect hack that makes up for all of that in one fell swoop.

Whenever augmented reality was first created, augmented breasts should have been the first thing on mankind’s checklist. Unfortunately most AR to date has been used to tell you that the McDonalds in front of you really is a McDonalds by proving it with an overlaid link. Thankfully for us Osaka-based Ningen Inc. has developed something big. Its AR Kyonyu uses the Kinect camera to detect people in its field of vision, and prompty outfit them with a pair of fairly sizable breasts.

日本の奇抜さとクレージーさは昔から言われていることだが、キネクトハックはそれを見事に一掃したと言えるだろう。

仮想現実が初めて作られたときから、仮想巨乳はリストの上位に載っていた。残念ながら今までの仮想現実は、目の前のマクドナルドは本当にマクドナルドなのだと、リンクを付け加えて証明してきた。しかし大阪本社の株式会社人間は、もっと上を目指した。仮想巨乳はキネクトのカメラを使って人を検知し、巨乳を装着するのである。

And as you’ll see in the demo video below, these virtual boobs appear to be programmed with fascinating funbag physics as well. It’s far from lifelike, but it’s still a pretty great demo. You gotta hand it to the guys here for their stoic expressions in the midst of what must surely be a titillating situation. Very well done.

It’s OK to Localize a Web Service, But it’s Not Cool to Copy the Website

…A case in point is the new Chinese social media app PengYou which is a clone of the social media dashboard-cum-diary Path.

So it’s absolutely fine – and most welcome – that PengYou has made a localized kind of social media diary app that plugs into Sina Weibo, Douban, et al. In fact, I want to sign-up and try it out. But it crosses the line when it also so shamelessly copies Path’s entire website too.

ウエブサイトをローカライズするのは良いが、コピーしてはいけない。

新しい中国のソーシャルメディア・アプリPengYouが、dashboard-cum-diary Pathのクローンである件に関してである。

PengYouがSina WeiboやDoubanに対応するソーシャルメディア・アプリをローカライズするのは全く問題がなく、歓迎されることである。実際のところ、試してみたいと思う。しかしdashboard-cum-diary Pathの完全なるコピーであるという恥ずかしい事実が待ち受けている。

Compare upeng.me and path.com (pictured side-by-side in the above image) and see the exact same design elements at the exact same heights, with a distinctive (and cool-looking) blurry photo of a girl offset by a close up of the app on an iPhone 4.


That’s taking it too far, and makes you wonder whether the start-up knows how to run itself, or just how to hit Ctrl-C and then Ctrl-V.

upeng.me とpath.com を比べてみると（写真では隣同士に並べてある）完全に同じデザインと配置で、iPhone4上のアプリケーションのクローズアップが、ぼんやりと映った女の子（クールな外見の）が特徴的にオフセットされているのが見て取れる。

これはやりすぎであり、企業が営業そのものの仕方をわきまえているか、Ctrl-C、Ctrl-Vの順番に打つのだけを知っているのか問いただしたくなる。

On a similar note, fellow blogger Willis said earlier this summer that “it’s the execution that really matters,” and not the idea. And while I agree with that, and love to see a localized idea beat-out some wrong-headed opposition – hello Taobao, goodbye eBay! – there’s an extent beyond which the localization is conceptually closer to ripping-off. And that’s a line PengYou crossed with its website.

Anyway, no hard feelings. I’m trying out the PengYou service, and love the slick app, which looks even better than Path’s. It borrows some design cues, but it’s mostly distinctive. Could well be worth a review…

同様に、ブロガーのWillisが今年の初夏に言っていたように、「実際に決行すること」が問題なのであって、アイディアそのものではない。同意はするにせよ、ひねくれた敵を、ローカリゼーションが破るのを見てみたいと思う。Taobaoこんにちは、eBayさようなら！ローカリゼーションが概念的に奪い取られそうな状況がある。それがPengYouが越えたラインなのだ。

まあ悪くは思わない。PengYouを試した所、Pathを越える滑らかなアプリが気に入った。デザインはいくつか借り物だが、特徴的な面も多い。レビューに値するかもしれない。

9 Traits of Great Entrepreneurs

Yinglan is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Fostering Entrepreneurship, a Kauffman Fellow, a founder of 3i Venturelab China, and teaches the Masters program in Technopreneurship & Innovation. He now works with the Singapor Government to enhance the innovation and enterprise landscape in Singapor. He blogs here and tweets here.

A large part of my job involves meeting entrepreneurs, which I love. I meet with a staggering number of them each week. Some you can tell are lemons after five minutes, but a special few make my day (the best part of my day). I recently wondered whether there were any common traits amongst those entrepreneurs who were great.

Yinglanは世界経済フォーラムの国際会議の起業家育成メンバー、Kauffman Fellow（ベンチャーキャピタリスト養成プログラム）、3i Venturelab Chinaの創立者、そしてTechnopreneurship & Innovationの大学院の講師でもある。現在彼はシンガポール政府と協力し、シンガポールで革新と事業を活性化する取り組みをしている。彼のブログとツイートによると：

仕事上多くの起業家と会い、それを非常に楽しみにしている。毎週膨大な数の起業家に会う。役立たずだとすぐにわかる人もいれば、会って良かったと思わせるような人も少なからずいる（私にとっては一日の中で最高の瞬間だ）。最近優れた起業家達には共通の特長があるのかと思い始めた。

The wonderful thing about venture investing is that it is a science where your experience is cumulative. Similar to Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule, if you’ve seen 10,000 business plans and met with 10,000 entrepreneurs, you develop pattern recognition – and it gets better the older you get, like a well-aged wine.

The great VCs – I’d name Michael Moritz and Don Valentine here; both of whom I have met personally, spoken with at length, and admire greatly (you can read more in The Way Of The VC) – all have this perceptible quality. It’s what industry veterans call ‘the smell.’

Some of the filters I have developed for assessing entrepreneurs:

1. Thoughtful listening. Does s/he watch customers and how they behave? What is the input-output ratio?
2. Do they iterate rapidly?
3. Are they good at mental arithmetic?
4. Do they validate the user-base of the product? i.e. measure high-quality repeat users or the net promoter score?
5. Do they measure figure metrics which reflect both the quality of the business and factors which they can influence?
6. Is s/he able to convey a complex business in very simple terms? (The test is to explain it to your mom and see whether she understands. If she can’t understand it, it is too complicated.)

起業家を判断する上で私が身につけたフィルターは
１。聞き上手である。顧客とその行動を観察するか？インプットとアウトプットの割合は？
２。素早く繰り返すことが出来るか
３。暗算が得意か
４。製品のユーザー基盤を認証しているか？例：質の高いリピーターを基準にするか、インターネット上でのプロモーションは？
５。ビジネスの質と影響を受ける要因の双方を計算しているか
６。複雑なビジネスを簡単な言葉で説明出来るか（母親に説明し、理解できるかみてみるといい。もし理解出来ないようならば難しすぎるのだ）

7. Would they ‘throw a turd in the punch bowl’ and disrupt the industry?
8. Can s/he imagine doing anything with his/her life other than the chosen service or product? (Correct answer is no)
9. Do they refer to a ‘museum of mistakes’ and avoid them?

There is one last factor which I’m hesitant to put because there are numerous counterexamples – it’s that, by and large, great entrepreneurs are also great human beings. You leave a meeting with them feeling that they are nice individuals, and often like to help them. Some have this quality in them naturally.

数多くの反例があるためためらっている最後の要因がある。それは、偉大な起業家は偉大な人間である、ということである。ミーティングの最後には、素晴しい個々に出会い、手助けしたいと思う。自然にこの素質を持っている人もいる。

To give one real-world example… We work with one brilliant entrepreneur who has great engineering and product skills. He’s extremely sociable, does business development naturally, and all his staff love him. Most importantly, he is very thoughtful and a great listener. (Most entrepreneurs talk too much and the signal-to-noise ratio is low). Not surprisingly, the company is preparing for a high profile exit. We wish we could clone more folks like him.

There are more key attributes, of course. Although these are the main traits which I think personally are more important. Feel free to add on in the comments.

実例を１つ上げてみよう。ある素晴しい起業家と働いていて、彼のエンジニア力と製作力はかなりのものだ。彼は非常に社交的で、ビジネス展開を自然に行い、スタッフに愛されている。最も重要なのは、彼が思考的で良い聞き手だということだ（ほどんどの起業家は話好きで信号対雑音比が低い）。当然のことながら、会社はかなりの収益を上げると予想されている。彼のような人物を作り上げたいものだ。

Popcorn App for Movie Lovers in Singapore Works Great

Popcorn is a new mobile app on iTunes which helps movie lovers to search for showtimes, previews, and book tickets. We recently met co-founder of the app, Lee Ken Ming, who says that his app is “really cool” and has the potential to be “the best movie app in town.”

He sounded pretty confident and so I gave it try. My conclusion? I like it. The app is solid. But there are areas where it could have been better. Nonetheless, Popcorn serves its purpose pretty well – search, preview, book — all in an app (iTunes link).

ポップコーンはiTune上の携帯用アプリで、映画の時間、プレビュー、予約が出来るアプリだ。アプリの創立者Lee Ken Mingに話をきいた所、ポップコーンは大変好評で、将来的に映画のアプリで一番になる可能性があるという。

リー氏があまりにも自信たっぷりなので、私もアプリを試してみた。結果としては、気に入った。このアプリはしっかりしている。改良の余地もあるものの、ポップコーン・アプリは検索、プレビュー、予約の全てに対応している。

Search: Popcorn’s search functionalities pin-point what movie lovers are looking for exactly: (1) movie date and time, (2) movie title, (3) and theater. It loads pretty fast on 3G too. Nonetheless, I thought the date selection was pretty disappointing as it only allows search to be conducted for today, tomorrow, and day after tomorrow. In other words, folks who are searching for movie tickets from Monday to Wednesday can’t use the search function to book tickets for Saturday, which is a common movie day.

検索：ポップコーンの検索機能は、映画好きがまさに求めている情報を示す。１）映画の日付と時間　２）タイトル　３）劇場。３Gでは非常に早く動く。それにも関わらず、日付のセレクションにはガッカリさせられた。なぜならば今日、明日、明後日しか検索出来ないからである。つまり、月曜日から水曜日までは、映画館がにぎわう土曜日の予約が出来ないのである。
