During disasters, iCalamity will help you find family and friends

The super typhoon Haiyan that previously hit the Philippines seemed to have been a lesson for everyone. A number of startups and companies have even created online crisis response platforms to help.

In preparation for future calamities, a group of Davao-based developers has created an app that reconnects families and informs their loved ones about their current location and situation using their phones.

来る災害に備え、フィリピン・ダバオ市の開発者グループは携帯端末から現在地と状況を家族に伝え、再会を助けるアプリケーションを開発しました。

Called iCalamity, it was born out of the recently concluded AngelHack in Davao hackathon organized by the Smart Developer Network. The hackathon revolved around the theme of “Hack2Help” that challenged software developers and mobile programmers in the region to create apps and systems within 24 hours that can be useful during times of emergency.

iCalamity won against 18 other mobile app projects that competed during the hackathon.

Christopher John Cubos, member of the team who created iCalamity, says their goal with the app “is to ensure that no one will ever have to face a calamity alone.” He adds:

Most of the people in Leyte and other areas felt alone and abandoned. When the typhoon struck, nobody was there to help them right away, and most of the people who survived were left to fend for themselves.

People from different parts of the country, or even the Filipino overseas workers can track the whereabouts of their family. People will be able to know the exact location of the members of the family through their mobile numbers. The location will be plotted on an interactive map.

No network signal? No problem

The iCalamity system uses a combination of GPS, geofencing and mapping technologies to correctly pinpoint the location of mobile phone users on the ground. It also utilizes the Youphoric SMS API by telco Smart Communications and content provider YouPhoric labs.

Should the system fail to locate a specific person for notification — due to lack of signal or battery — the app automatically scrolls through a pre-defined list of other family members or friends until it finds a user with an active phone signal or data connection.

Cubos says this is also useful for rescue and relief workers in the area so they can immediately identify which individuals and areas need urgent help.

Smart senior manager for partner management and developer Delations Jim Ayson says that they will be working closely with iCalamity and other participants to “get them off the ground for use in the Yolanda relief efforts and in similar efforts in the future.”

ICalamity is available for free on the web. An app for iOS and Android is also in the works.

China E-Commerce Giant Alibaba Now Bigger than Baidu, Reveals New Financials

China’s biggest e-commerce company, Alibaba Group, which runs sites like Taobao and Tmall, has revealed in a filing to the US SEC (see here) that its revenue rose 64 percent from last year to $805.9 million at the end of 2012 Q1.

Alibaba Group, Reuters points out, has now moved up to be China’s second-biggest web company by revenue. It’s behind the social and gaming efforts of Tencent (HKG:0700), but now ahead of Chinese search engine Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) which has been pushed down to third-largest.

現在Baiduよりも大きな、中国のインターネット取引大手のAlibabaグループが新しい金融政策を発表した。

TaotaoやTmall等のサイトを運営する、中国のインターネット取引最大手のAlibabaグループが、米国証券取引委員会への提出資料の中で、2012年の第一四半期の税収が昨年比64％増加して8億590万ドルになったと発表した。

Xiaomi Battles for The Future of Instant Messenger, Established IM Labs and Acquired MSNLite

17 millions vs. 100millions, obviously in terms of registered users, Xiaomi’s mobile messenger MiLiao (Mitalk) has failed in competing with Tencent’s Weixin. But it does not means Xiaomi will give up. LEI Jun, CEO of Xiaomi recently said on his weibo,

Xiaomi has reached 17 millions registered users and 1 million concurrent users online. I believe this is just a beginning.

Xiaomi’s Miliao is changing its strategy and looking at the future of IM.

Instant Messenger Labs

Xiaomi’s Instant Messenger (IM) Lab has been established. On its official website, it asked the question to all Xiaomi’s fans: “We are using QQ and Weixin for instant messaging for now, but what shall we use in future?” Xiaomi’s IM Labs is to explore the next generation of IM. It encourages users to open their minds and send innovative ideas to the lab.

Acquisition of MSNLite

MSNLite is a third-party PC-based MSN client which simplified the official MSN client (which I think it became really a crap). MSNLite also enhanced the original, for examples, it enhanced the security of MSN as it has all instant messages encrypted; it offers message backup to cloud which allows users to access their chat history using any PC; it supports offline file transferring which means you can send files to someone who’s offline. MSNLite’s first released in April, 2010 and is reported around 1 millions active users. With this acquisition, surely we are going to see Miliao’s PC client coming soon. And this will obviously trigger the war against Tencent’s QQ.

Chinese Video Streaming Site 56.com Launches “Open Platform” Strategy

Chinese video streaming site 56.com announced an open platform strategy yesterday that the company hopes will help expand its user base. The platform, which can be found at dev.56.com, gives pro users and developers easy access to 56.com’s API as well as an SDK and other features that should make it easier for companies and developers to make use of 56′s video technology in apps and on their own sites.

The open platform is 56′s latest push in the direction of a UGC (user-generated content) focused site. In China’s crowded and highly expensive online video marketplace, 56.com has clearly decided it’s better to try to position itself as the home of UGC and as an easy platform for developers with video needs rather than attempting to compete directly with the big guys in buying up the rights to expensive TV shows or paying to produce original programming.

But the open strategy doesn’t really set 56.com apart from Youku and Tudou. Both companies have their own developer sites that provide access to similar tools (dev.youku.com and dev.tudou.com respectively), although neither of those sites are as slickly-designed as 56.com’s new one is.

56′s new platform has already attracted some big partners during its internal beta, including social networking giant RenRen. But those partners are not exclusive, and 56.com is still a long way from the lead when it comes to online video in China:

According to Erikson, parenthood is the prime generative encounter for most people. Approaches to parenthood have an effect on whether parenting is enjoyable and stimulating, or difficult and burdensome. In our own lab with a different sample, authoritative parenting, which was related to parental generativity, was related to positive relations with offspring. In contrast, authoritarian parenting, characterized by high control and low warmth, was marked by conflict between parents and offspring. Thus, in the current sample, there should be a positive relationship between generativity and expressions of happiness and self-growth through motherhood (and grandmotherhood).
