The business of persuasion — and how machines are beating humans

The wording and emotions used in advertising can affect clicks by 400 percent. And it turns out humans aren’t that good at it.

That’s according to Persado, a company that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to evaluate and construct short text, like ad copy and email subjects. Essentially, the company says it can “engineer” copy that is more persuasive without having to create multiple variations and A/B test.

Marketers today are using data to replace guesswork. But they still have to start somewhere. Typically a campaign begins with a person who writes what she thinks will work best. It’s based on intuition more than anything else.

And it turns out our intuition is often wrong.

To coincide with the end of tax season, Persado recently analyzed the advertisements of companies that do tax preparation, like TurboTax and H&R Block. The company found that the emotions most of the ads play on don’t actually work that well.

The company categorized the ads and found that the emotions they are relying on, like urgency (“time is running out”), gratification (“get your biggest refund fast”), and celebration (“totally free tax returns”), aren’t resulting in as many click-throughs as possible.

Instead, Persado “engineered” copy that focused on other emotions. These included exclusivity (“you’re invited: file your taxes today, it’s free”) and anxiety (“important information for you: please file your taxes today”).

The difference may not seem substantial, but focusing on different emotions increased click-throughs of anywhere from 70 to 110 percent, the company found. We’ve learned similar things in our research on conversion rate optimization.

Persado says this type of data-driven copy creation works in direct response communications like display ads, email, SMS, and tweets. The types of messages designed, in other words, to get people to “click here.”

Clearly, the robots are coming.

Persado was spun out from Upstream and received $15 million from Bain Capital Ventures (BCV) in February 2013. The company raised an additional $21 million series B earlier this year from Starvest Ventures, BCV, American Express Ventures, and Citi Ventures.

Dianping Leads $22M Investment in Meican to Further Foray into Online Food Ordering

The emergence of local food ordering services is fueling a Chinese trend where local diners are promised greater convenience and access to restaurant menus. Some 20.1% of Chinese internet users used online food ordering services in first half of 2014, according to iMedia research. The booming market has made the sector a regular recipient of venture capital funding.

Chinese online food ordering site Meican completed RMB140 million (US$22.56 million) of Series C funding led by the leading local ratings and reviews service Dianping, with the participation of KPCB, Nokia Growth Partners and Trust Bridge Partners. The company received B round funding last year.

中国のオンライン料理注文サイト、Meicanは、1億4000万人民元（2256万米ドル）のシリーズCでの資金調達を完了した。これは地域の格付け及びレビューサービスの主要企業であるDianpingが主導したもので、出資には他にKPCB、Nokia Growth Partners、Trust Bridge Partnersが参加した。Meicanは昨年、ラウンドBでの資金調達を受けていた。

Unlike rivals Ele.me and Daojia, which focus on individual customers, Meican targets enterprise clients that cater for their employees. The site also allows users to build a custom homepage by adding their locations and favorite restaurants. Now operating in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu, Meican is planning to expand to 30 cities in the near future.

Dianping, the lead investor of this round, is also the backer of Ele.me, a popular online food ordering platform with a solid low-end client base which plans to expand into the high-end market. This alliance allows both parties to share user and merchant data, and to integrate their food ordering services. Likewise, the new investment will bring Dianping more data resources and facilitate its expansion to online food ordering for enterprises.

Dianping reportedly received US$850 million of financing from Xiaomi, Tencent, Teasek Holdings and Wanda Group to push its transformation to a O2O local life platform. The company has invested in a group of catering services, such as Hima Software, a CRM solution provider for restaurants and hotels, food ordering service DZB, WiFi solution WiWide, and enterprise resource planning service Shanglong Technology.

The lucrative online food ordering market has spurred the efforts of the domestic tech giants. Chinese e-commerce giant JD led a US$50 million Series D funding in Daojia.com. Etaoshi, which received US$20 million in Series B funding last year, has yet to receive strategic investment from the internet titans, but has formed partnerships with Baidu, Qihoo 360, Alibaba and Meituan.

Facebook launches standalone Messenger app for the web

Facebook today launched Facebook Messenger on the web. If this sounds confusing, that’s because it is: While Messenger is already available on the company’s main facebook.com website as Facebook Chat, the company is now offering a standalone app over at messenger.com.

In other words, Facebook wants a standalone Facebook Messenger browser experience (with desktop notifications) that is completely separate from the rest of the social network. Like the mobile version, the web app is meant to provide a way to chat with other Facebook users without the distractions of unrelated notifications, the News Feed, Timelines, Pages, photos, videos, and so on.

Following Microsoft, Amazon introduces a cloud service for machine learning

Amazon Web Services, the largest public cloud in the market, debuted a service today that developers can use to introduce machine learning into their applications.

Andy Jassy, the head of the Amazon cloud, spoke about the new service, Amazon Machine Learning, at the 2015 AWS Summit in San Francisco. It’s available today. This is not the most surprising development in the cloud world, considering that Microsoft announced its own similar service, Azure Machine Learning, last June.

パブリッククラウド市場で最大のサービスであるAmazon Web Servicesは本日、開発者が機械学習を自らのアプリケーションに導入するために使用できるサービスを発表した。

Amazon のクラウドサービスを率いるAndy Jassy氏は、サンフランシスコで開かれた2015 AWS Summitで、この新しいサービス、Amazon Machine Learningについて明らかにした。サービスは本日より利用可能だ。これはクラウドの世界ではさほど驚くべき展開ではない。Microsoftが同じような独自のサービス、Azure Machine Learningを昨年6月に発表しているからだ。

It will be interesting to see how Google, the other company in the triad of leaders in the cloud infrastructure market — and arguably one of the most significant machine learning companies in the world — will respond to Microsoft and now Amazon making cloud services anyone can use to train models and make predictions as a managed cloud service.

Israeli augmented reality startup nabs $5M funding led by Japanese Pachinko company

Israeli augmented reality startup InfinityAR announced today it has completed a US$5 million series B funding round led by Japan’s SUN Corporation, followed by New Zealand’s Singulariteam and US-based Platinum Partners Value Arbitrage Fund.

InfinityAR makes a software-based augmented reality (AR) engine that will let people interact with augmented content in their physical surroundings. It’s less Google Glass and more Microsoft Hololens. InfinityAR says it "can turn any device with two simple cameras into a powerful content augmentation platform."

InfinityAR’s technology maps the 3D environment, in real time, and enables projecting augmented reality 3D scenes as if they were part of the real world. Furthermore, it enables the user to control augmented reality content using natural hand movements.

InfinityARはソフトウエアベースの拡張現実（AR）エンジンを作っており、それにより人々は物理的な環境で拡張コンテンツと相互にコミュニケーションできるようになる。Google Glass以下、Microsoft Hololens 以上といったものだ。「これにより、2つのシンプルなカメラだけで、あらゆる機器をパワフルなコンテンツ拡張プラットフォームにすることができます」と同社は述べている。

InfinityARの技術は3D環境をリアルタイムでマッピングし、まるで現実世界の一部であるかのように、3次元の拡張現実シーンを投影することができる。さらに、ユーザは自然な手の動きで拡張現実コンテンツを操作することができるようになる。

The technology works indoors and outdoors and requires less computation and energy resources than competitors, says the company in a statement.

The latest funding will go toward further development of the product and expanding into the Japanese market. SUN Corporation is a major player in Japan’s Pachinko industry. Pachinko is a mechanical arcade game popular with gamblers, sort of like slot machines in the West.

(Alexa ranks Stack Overflow as the 53rd most trafficked site in the world and the 36th most popular site in the U.S. By comparison, general-purpose Q&A site Quora.com ranks only as 164th. Sitepoint, one of the closest competitors to Stack Overflow, ranks 1290th in the world.)

Stack Overflow is a really interesting source of data on the skill level of different coders around the world. Users of the platform vote up or down answers to questions, and based on the answers users provide and the rankings of their fellow users, Stack Overflow literally stack ranks its members. These rankings are by and large impartial, determined by the crowd and based solely on the perceived quality of answers to coding and systems questions.
