When you consider the male millennial audience, the huge hours of viewing time, the tournament circuit, and the infrastructure available via Twitch, fantasy gaming is an ideal and probably lucrative market. If someone builds it, those e-sports fans who spend 20 hours a week watching games are going to realize that they can pick winners and cash in, just like their counterparts who play fantasy football and basketball.

Fantasy apps like FanDuel and DraftKings illustrate how much cash is shifting from informal friend groups to the web. FanDuel alone collected over 370 million in entry fees during Q4 2014 – 4.5x more than one year before. DraftKings expects to pay out over $1 billion in prizes this year.

Fantasy e-sports are promising regardless of whether American TV channels choose to show gaming or not. As a joint NAPTE and Consumer Electronics Association study found, just 55 percent of millennials use TV as their primary viewing platform, and that number will continue to drop. Even without TV programming, e-sports and its fantasy leagues may be ahead of the curve rather than at a disadvantage.

Sigfox raises France’s biggest VC round ever at $115M to expand its IoT wireless network

LABEGE, France – Sigfox, a startup based in the southwest corner of this country, has raised $115 million to fund a global expansion of its wireless network that is dedicated to connecting Internet of Things devices.

That amount tops the $100 million raised by Paris ride-sharing leader BlaBlaCar last summer, a round that at the time was considered the biggest ever in French history. The $115 million round not only will accelerate Sigfox’s growth, but it should cement its place at the top of any list of Europe’s hottest startups.

“This funding will demonstrate that we can work with other partners to provide a network that will help us achieve our vision of a world with more connected devices,” said Sigfox chief executive Ludovic Le Moan in an interview. “It was not easy when we started to raise this round because we didn’t know what the market would be like.”

While estimates vary, many observers expect billions of new smart devices that contain sensors and chips to be connected to the Internet in the coming decades. The gadgets range from health and fitness devices to smart meters to more complex machines used in heavy industrial production.

The French government has identified the IoT sector in general as an area of strength for the country’s startups, focusing on hardware, software and the networks that will enable a growing number of connected devices to communicate.

Sigfox has emerged as one of the country’s biggest names in this field by creating a cellular network that is designed specifically to provide a more reliable method for such smart devices to send and receive data. The network has been built in partnership with local telecom partners in countries such as France, Spain, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

The company has plans to expand it soon to the United States and Asia. Le Moan said Sigfox is working on deals with local telecom companies in those markets. Sigfox currently has a three-person team based in San Francisco, but hopes to hire up to 30 more people in the U.S. and open an office on the east coast in anticipation of launching its service.

Overall, Sigfox has more than 80 employees, most of them based in Labege, a suburb located just outside of Toulouse that has become a hub for the region’s tech and startup scene. In a country where Paris still dominates finance and tech startups, it’s notable to see a major startup emerge in a region far outside the nation’s capital city.

Le Moan said he hopes to hire another 100 employees over the next year. The latest round of financing will fund new hiring as well as additional expansion of that network. Investors in the latest round include Spain’s Telefonica, France’s GDF Suez and Japan’s NTT DOCOMO Ventures.

Sigfox has previously raised $30 million over two rounds from Idinvest Partners, FSN PME, Ambition Numerérique, Intel Capital, Elaia Partner, Partech and Ixo Private Equity.

Mobile spending explodes

Turning to mobile spending on Alibaba’s sites:

・Mobile expenditure (GMV) rocketed to RMB 327 billion (US$53 billion) in Q4, up 213 percent annually.

・Mobile GMV accounted for 42 percent of total GMV in Q4 2014, compared to 20 percent in Q4 2013.

・Mobile monthly active users (MAUs) grew to 265 million, which nearly doubled from the 136 million figure 12 months prior.

While more mobile spending sounds good in theory, it actually hurt Alibaba in terms of revenues. “The lower revenue growth relative to GMV growth was mainly a result of the higher percentage of total GMV contributed by mobile GMV, which has a lower monetization rate compared to the non-mobile monetization rate,” explains the company’s report.

Profits down

Things are more mixed on the financials front. Although the ecommerce numbers increased, Alibaba missed analyst expectations on revenue. On the plus side, it beat expectations on earnings per share. Here are the raw numbers:

・Overall Alibaba Q4 revenues reached RMB 26.18 billion (US$4.22 billion), up 40 percent year-on-year.

・Of that total, revenues from the China estores hit RMB 23.1 billion (US$3.43 billion).

・Mobile-based revenue rocketed 448 percent to RMB 6.4 billion (US$1 billion).

・Net income for the quarter grew to RMB 5.98 billion (US$964 million), down 28 percent from the year prior.

利益の減少

He highlights a feature on the site where users can see the various transit options, and how that could impact a buyer’s decision-making. “It could mean the amount of time I’ll get to spend extra with my kids. It could mean from the Singapore perspective the amount of cars on the road. Or the amount of money I’ll spend on gas.”

99.co plans to make money by charging property agents a subscription fee of S$35 (US$25) a month to use its mobile app, which allows them to cross post properties to a number of popular sites, including competitors. Paying users will also get notified on referrals from the site, and they can screen potential buyers beforehand by viewing crucial information.

9. Qraved

Qraved was co-founded by Rocket Internet alumni Adrian Li and Steven Kim and has been called Indonesia’s first restaurant reservation app. In September 2013, the company raised seed funding from Rebright Partners, 500 Startups, and Skype co-founder Toivo Annus to expand the site as a restaurant directory and social network for foodies.

Between July and December last year, SimilarWeb estimates that Qraved was able to triple its web traffic to reach 90,000 monthly visitors, making it number one in the Indonesian foodtech market.

9. Qraved

InTime Retail
Brick-and-mortar retail company InTime Retail snatched a sizable US$692 million investment from Alibaba at the end of March.

InTime operates 28 department stores and eight shopping malls in China. The deal allows users of Alibaba’s Alipay ewallet to make in-store payments from their smartphones. Alibaba’s initial 9.9 percent equity mixed with the remaining bonds will eventually be converted into a 25 percent stake in InTime.

InTime Retail

In what might have been the most overlooked investment of the year, Tencent and Tiger Fund led a US$350 million series C funding round into this mobile ecommerce marketplace app. Users can browse and make purchases from within WeChat, and small vendors can set up their own shops through Koudai’s WeChat channels. Some media have reported the three-year-old startup gets even more traffic than Taobao on mobile.

Blink
The fun Snapchat-inspired photo sharing app closed a US$20 million series A round of funding in October led by Tencent, followed by Sequoia, H Capital, ZhenFund, and Innovation Works. The bilingual app lets you snap a photo or short video, spray graffiti and text over it, and add a voice message.

Koudai
今年一番見過ごされた可能性のあった投資だが、TencentとTiger Fundは、このモバイルeコマースマーケットプレイスアプリに対する3億5000万米ドルのシリーズC投資ラウンドをリードした。ユーザはWeChat内を閲覧して商品を購入することができ、小規模な販売者はKoudaiのWeChatチャンネルを通して店を出すことができる。一部の報道によると、この設立後3年のスタートアップは、モバイル上のトラフィックがTaobaoを凌いでいるとのことだ。

Both Alibaba and Tencent are engaged in a land grab for licensed video content, both in China and overseas.

Renren Kuaidi
This startup lets anyone who meets the eligibility requirements sign up to be a local courier. The crowdsourced delivery network secured a US$15 million series A round from Tencent and Banyan fund. The Uber for local deliveries now operates in six major Chinese cities.

Huayi Brothers
これはTencentとAlibabaの両社が同じ投資ラウンドに参加した数少ない会社のひとつである。この北京に本拠を置くテレビ番組映画制作スタジオは、インターネット界の二大会社と中国の他一社から、36億人民元（5億8100万米ドル）の投資を受けた。AlibabaとTencentはどちらも中国の国内外において映像コンテンツのライセンスを買い漁っている。
